LEADS THE WAY TO BERMUDA AND NASSAU ALBUQUERQUE. N. Oct 24 Mellowed by flme and tradition, their crumbling walls venera- i ted monuments to the fiery faith and missionary zeal of the Fran- ciscan priests, stand the IS missions of New Mexico founded 150 years before the churches of Cali-1 fornia. For more than three centuries the bright New Mexico sun has been reflected from their light adobe walls. There have been times, however, when this lightness has been reddened with blood, such as in the Pueblo Indian rebellion of 1860, when missionary; fathers were ruthlessly slain.

On other occasions the faithful have fled to the protecting mission walls, and the cross of Calvary quieted the ensanguined thirst of the Indians. While New Mexico was discovered by a Franciscan, Fray Marcos de Niza, little progress was made In the missionary field until 1598, when Onate came to colonize the territory. With him came 10 priests. The province was divided into seven districts, including the country of the bloodthirsty Navajos and Apaches. Eight of the 10 priests were sent to take charge of isolated posts separated by miles of wilderness.

Era of Steady Progress The greatest era of church building came in 1621, when Father Alonzo Benavides came to New-Mexico as the first custodian and nrniri-ocd ira TMInnm leiwiwm, i.iomi..-. nai-iiin overuirow uie amm iwe nu were not suouueo. lor yeais. The earliest seat of Indian education was the Mission of San Antonio de Isleta, 10 miles south of Albuquerque.

The heavy buttressed mission overshadows the low, one-storied buildings that comprise the prosperous Pueblo of Isleta. A Picturesque Spot One of the most picturesque missions Is that of San Lorenzo de Picuris, 20 miles south of Taos. In a setting of pine-covered, undulating mountains, the little mission exudes a feeling of peace whirh belies its history. Its now quiet village housed a savage tribe. It became, a hotbed of rebellion during the Indian revolt and the Picuris tribe put to death their priest, Father Ascon-sion Zarate, WEST INDIES AND SO.

S. LETITIA for CHRISTMAS CHICAGO, Oct. 24 The Burlington Railroad's new streamlined Denver Zephyr, on a breakfast-to-dinner run Friday, established a new speed record for the 1.017 miles from Chicago to Denver. The twelve-car train made the run In 12 hours, 13 minutes, clipping nearly an hour from the record of Ki hourse, five minutes, set by the original three-car Zephyr May 26, 1334.
