MARCH 23, 1967 THE ANDERSON HERALD PAGE 11 Sanders Pledge To Keep An Eye On Pensacola Open Scorecard This Year Failure To Sign May Have Cost Him Title Club course. Cost of Confusion By DAVID M. MOFFIT UPI Sports Writer PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI)Doug Sanders, back at the scene of his greatest golf disaster, vowed Wednesday to keep his eye on the ball- and on his scorecard in this year's Pensacola Open. The fun-loving Sanders has been known to let his attention wander, which cost him dearly in last year's tournament here.

But that was last year. Sanders, third. on this year's money list and fresh from a final round 68 in last week's Jacksonville Open, is deter. mined to make amends in this $75,000 tournament which begins Thursday over the short, yard par 72 Pensacola Country Sanders' 1966 downfall came as he was lealing by two strokes and 12 under par after a pair of 66s. He was besieged by autograph seekers as he walked off the course at the end of the second round.

In the confusion, he turned in his scorecard without signing it, a violation of PGA rules, and was ousted from the tournament. The usually good natured golfer was incensed. He in vain with tournament director Jack Tuthill, blaming a runner for taking away his card before he had time to sign it and blaming a tournament official for "rushing" him in for can interview. The PGA, however, had issued a warning only a few weeks earlier that it would disqualify any golfer who did not sign his card and had, in fact, taken similar action against one of the lesser known pros. "I was really upset at the said Sanders, who regained his touch to win over $100,000 for the year.

Gay Brewer, second at the time of Sanders' mishap, went on to win here last year by three strokes over Australian Bruce Devin- Brewer's only 1966 tournament win. Smallest Pro Prize Most of the top names are here, except Arnold Palmer and Billy Casper. Golfer of the year in 1966, Casper has skipped the entire Florida tour because of an allergy and has spent the time entertaining troops in Vietnam. Among those present in adlition to Brewer and Sanders are Julius Boros, now the leading money winner for the year; Jack Nicklaus, tuning up for a try at a third straight Masters crown; South African Player and Dan Sikes, the winner at Jacksonville. Pensacola is the fourth and final stop on the Florida leg of the professional golf tour, and the smallest in monetary reward.

The Doral at Miami, Orlando and Jacksonville all paid at least $100,000. Top prize here is worth $15,000, one-third more than Brewer got in 1966. It is believed that Hannum hardly felt he needed a vote of confidence after coaching a team to the Eastern title with such a fantastic record. Chubasco Leads Yacht Classic MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (UPI) -Chubasco, the 67-foot sloop, remained in the lead Wednesday night as darkness blanketed the 811-mile fourth biennial Miami to Montego Bay yacht race. Johnson of the New York Yacht Club remained in the top two spots, several smaller boats had moved up. Otseketa surged to third position and Laughing Lady moved to fourth. Otseketa is a 40-foot sloop captained by Henry Burkard of Detroit's Bayview Yacht Club and Laughing Lady is a 55-foot yawl under charter to Warner Willcox of Miami's Coral Reef Yacht Club. By nightfall, Chubasco and Ticonderoga were continuing their battle just east of Cat Island in eastern Bahamian waters. Others in striking positions were Ondine, Vamoose, Flame, Red Jacket, Guinevere and Solution.

Hannum entered press room at Convention Hall after the game and said: "I want to say something first. I am very unhappy with Mr. Irv Kosloff's release and that's the word I want to use his release, his remarks to a morning paper. "That's all I want to say until after the playoffs." Kosloff, owner of the 76ers, had told a newsman that Hannum would be back as coach next season 'even if the club loses every game in the playoffs." He also was quoted as saying he thought a a Chicago's John Kerr and San Francisco's Bill Sharman probably deserved more Coach of the Year consideration than Hannum. Hannum, who guided the 76ers to a 68-13 record, best in the history of the NBA, would not elaborate on which of Kosloff's remarks upset him, nor would he say if there was anything more behind his blast.

It is believed that Hannum hardly felt he needed a vote of confidence after coaching a such a fantastic record. team to the Eastern title with 1snC utool au, paraque as Hannum was finishing his two-sentence statement. Hannum, who signed a twocontract to coach the 76ers after Dolph Schayes was fired, is known as a strong willed individual who resents owner interference in his operation.

He reportedly had difficulties with owner Ben Kerner at St. Louis and San Francisco's Franklin Mieuli in his previous two coaching posts. Mieuli fired Hannum after last season, asserting that the coach's business interests prevented him from working the year around. The Warriors hired Sharman. Hannum succeeded Schayes, who was canned because his team flopped in the playoffs after winning the Eastern title.
