Extension of the 'Modernise for Winter" prngrsm through November in Detroit and Michigan was announced Saturday by L. F. Rogers, associate director of the Federal Housing Administration in Michigan. Rogers commented thst the modernization campaign has gained such momentum that builders, lending institutions and supply dealers have asked that it be c6n-tinued until extreme cold sets in. The "Modernize for Winter" program will continue through November in other parts of the United States as well, Rogers said.

The Michigan office of the Federal Housing Administration, located at 1174 National Bank Building, has received a supply of check lists for homes which are available for free distribution. Some 40 points covering both exterior and interior of homes and reaching from the chimney masonry cap to the footings are listed. These have been previously found of considerable assistance to those who desire to repair or improve their homes and pay in cash as well as those property owners or lease holders who desire to take advantage of the modernisation credit plan. The number of this home check list booklet is Form FHA 2065. Another booklet describing how-merchants, manufacturers and owners of business property may obtain loans up to $50,000 has been issued.

This leanding service is available for the modernization of apartments, multiple family dwellings, hotels, stores and shops, hospitals, schools, colleges, orphanages and industrial plants. I am nuttlne a chair mil in XEV YORK, Oct. 10 Slight ions for making a new house aJ fire-resistant as possible were outlined here by P. A. Andrews, virf president of Johns-Manville in of building materials, in oonnftipn with the nationwide nborrvance of Fire Prevention Week, which closes today. "I'cnple who plan to build should insist on good fire-safe con-strjctlnn and should take advantage of as many of the modern fireproof and fire-resistant building materials as possible," Andrews siiid.

"This is especially important nw Iwause of the great activity in home building which has been brought about by increased incomes, a decided housing shortage, and improved financing, such as the federal Housing Administration Insured Mortgage System." Andrews' suggestions for eliminating fir hazards in new construction are: 1-Exterior covering of the bouse, both roof and sidewalls, sh.wM be fire-resistant. The side-walls may be of brick, stucco, or developed asbestos siding shingles. The roof should be built of soive similar fireproof material. Exposure to the heat and flame of next-door fires is the greatest known cause of fire in this country, Recounting for losses of more than J26.nn0,000 annually. 2 Interior plaster should be applied to a fireproof material such as a steel wire mesh, which helps tn provide a fire-resisting barrier on the inside walls of the house, W'hIIs and partitions should he fit estopped to prevent fires from running up the hollow wall paces and between floors.

If home insulation is planned, it is best to use some type which will completely fill the walls and blanket the inside of the roof with fireproof material. Rock-wool home insula' ion is very effective. 4 Masonry chimneys should be ell built and lined with continuous flue tile. Most architects requite at least two inches between the masonry of the chimney and timber framing members (joists and beams). This space should likewise be firestnpped.

5- Stair supports should be flre-swipped at bottom and-top. 6 All electric wiring and gas plumbing should be done by licensed artisans. 7 It is advisable to cover the ceiling of the cellar, or at least the portion over the heating plant or boiler, with a fire-resistant my dining room, and I am in doubt whether it should line up with the winaow mis. A. If the sills come at the proper height it is desirable, but it is not necessary.

Decide where you want the rail and put It there. I build. Learn all of the financing costs, interest, commissions, insurance, pay-offs. If the charges are too high, consult your architect, building and loan association, the Kederal Housing Administration representative. 8 Let the contract.

Have a legal form of contract approved by your architect. You may have to get a building permit, if so, get it before you sign the contract. 9 Pay the bills. Never pay an account until you have receipted bills for every item and releases of mechanics' liens for all material and labor. Your architect will check all of this.

Be sure the contractor pays his bills before you pay yours. 10 Move In. No one needs direction as to this, but do not move in until you are satisfied that the job is essentially complete and Shelf Space If the breakfast nook In your kitchen is crowded for space, install a shelf on the wall above the electric outlet and paint or enamel it to harmonize or contrast with your breakfast nook furniture. Such a shelf will give you a place to set the toaster during breakfast Luty Will Speak at Exchange Club Don J. Thus for many there seems to be no end of complicating details. Here are listed the major operations in chronological order, with some of the critical Items to be observed in each. Time may be wasted and effort lost by changing the order. 1 Buy a lot. But first have the survey made and the title abstracted, and before any money Is paid have an attorney review the whole matter together with the contract for purchase.

Follow his advice. 2 Get sketch plans. Tell your architect what you want and what you can spend. He will make sketches for your choice and afterward preliminary drawings sufficient for rough estimates but not complete enough for building. 3 Get estimates of cost.

Your architect will do this for you. If the figures run too high, you can decide whether you want to revise your plans or give up the project. Preliminary estimates of cost are often rather frail. 4 Consult the banker. With the preliminary plans and cost data you have suine basis to discuss the matter.

II should be able to tell whether or not his organization would finance the plan you hav In mind. If he has any prejudices against it, this is the time to learn of them. Resale value may be as critical to you as to him. 5- Get complete plana and specifications. Anticipate somewhat higher final rosts than you had from the preliminary estimates.

Do not add extras. Keep within the budget but have the plans and specification complete in every particular. 6 -Take bids. This Is again the business of your architect. Get several good contractors to figure the plans at least three.

Do not invite bids from builders you would not trust with the building contract. Play fair with these people, freer.e out the shyster builders. JUST COMPLETED FOR SALE 20-year F. H. A.
