The silly season in radio is here again and it's every man for himself until it blows over.

Personally, we are going to eschew daytime radio programs until a semblance of sanity is restored, and we advise all ot you with quick tempers to do the same. If you decide to live through it as though nothing happened and you wind up behind that black ball with a No. 8 on its bosom, don't say we didn't warn you. By the "silly season," we mean that time of year when sponsors conduct surveys to find out how many people are listening to their commercial announcements. There are any number of ways to do this, out 99.9 per cent of all sponsors favor the contest method, and therein lies the rub.

Practically every radio contest is the same, the only apparent difference coming In the amount of enthusiasm the respective announcers can work up. Just why an announcer should make himself a fit subject tot a straight-jacket while nforming his customers that the doss wants to know "are ya Ustenin' is beyond us. But they all do, and this year the excitement has reached a higher pitch than ever before. The announcers' screams about the wonderful prizes you can win by completing this sentence: "Flaxo-Waxo is terrific for my skin because have been agumented this year by the clanging of bells and the blowing of whistles. The sponsor doesn't give two hoots for your reasons, in 20 words or fewer, why you like his product.

All he wants to know is whether you are listening to his advertising and whether you are interested enough to buy his product. As for completing sentences, we have one of our own we would like to complete and we can do it in fewer than 20 words. "I don't like radio contest time because it bores the life out ot me and forces announcers to hit new lows of asininity." Proof that you don't have to he a second Paderewskl to be a successful song writer is offered by Irving Caesar, whose "Songs of Safety" are features of the Rudy Vallee hour. Caesar, who has written many hits, including "Tea for Two," "Swa-nee" and It True What They Say About Dixie 1" plays the Ivories with two linger. In that time he estimates that he haa read 1,000,000 words, been on his feet 8,000 hours before microphones, waded through 15,000 pages of script, attended 24,000 hours ot rehearsal and (we're saying this one for him) eaten 15,000 lunches on the run. On Friday next, the town of Bloomington, 111., will turn Itself inside out and do a couple of nip-ups for one of its most famous native sons, one Paul Rhymer.

Riggs was disappointed, too, when Tommy announced that further academic pursuit was hopeless. He wasn't kidding. He was tounced out of Brown University and never finished Ohio State University. The reason for his untimely exit from Prown was not revealed in our interview with Tommy, hut it must have been pretty serious because he played plenty of football for that school st a time when football players were getting educated at schools other than Brown. He didn't tell us why he didn't set past his junior year at O.S.U.

in so many words, but we gathered that it had something to do with radio. He began his radio career in Columbus, home of O. 3. U. and it seemed like a pretty fascinating way of making a living.

No sense In trying to convince professors that you had the makings of a metallurgist (professors are so hard to convince) when you could find people who would pay for doing what you liked to do best sing on the radio. Failed In Chicken Business That's the way Tommy P.iggs jtot his start as a singer and piano player. Before he became a radio star and before Betty Lou was discovered. Tommy tried his hand at the chicken business, but it didn't work out. The idea was all right to raise broilers for hotels but somehow the chickens cost more to raise than they brought on the market, and inside of four months Mr.

RiRgs had bowed out of the poultry business. "I never liked the chicken business much anyway," said Tommy, "so I decided to take another fling at radio. I got a job as a singer on KDKA in Pittsburgh snd from there I drifted around from station to station, finally winding up at WLW in Cincinnati. But we are getting a little ahead of the story. When Tommy landed at WLW he already had discovered Betty Lou and that's a story in itself.

Talked Falsetto as a Hoy "I used to talk In a falsetto voice as a kid in knee pants," Tommy said. "I don't know why I did it just to be smart, I guess. I know I never realized that I could ever earn a living with it. "Then, as I grew older, I found 10 p. m.

One day, after the program was over, 1 stayed at the piano to try out a new number. There was one particular part of the song that I couldn't get right, and the more 1 tried it the madder I got.
