Harry Heilmann's name came up and Ty couldn't find enough compliments for the Tiger slugger who later became his competitor in the broadcasting business.

"When Harry quit baseball he moved into the press box as an announcer with WXYZ," Ty said. "He brought along hundreds of inside baseball stories and a skill for predicting what might happen on the field." Although Heilmann had been a hero with the Tigers, it wasn't until several years had passed that he won over the majority of Michigan's baseball fans. A raspy voice, an Eastern accent and the contrast with Tyson's polished delivery irritated some who listened to Harry. There was no such thing as a Tiger fan who liked both announcers you were either a Tyson fan or a Heilmann fan, never both. But the two built a sound friendship and it was Tyson who came back to the broadcast booth to fill in for Heilmann when Harry became ill in 1950.
