DETROIT FREE April 23, 1982 5B Baptism gown plane lucky LANSING (AP) It probably won't mean much to Krista Thorp, but the gown she will wear Sunday was a lifesaver 38 years ago for the crew of a battered American bomber. The month-old infant will be the 20th baby in her family to wear a baptismal gown fashioned from the silk and cords of a World War II parachute. The garment's history dates to July 2, 1944, when Lt. Paul Van Den Berg of Grand Rapids was the navigator of a B24 Liberator on a bomb run over eastern Europe. VAN DEN BERG, now a 61-year-old engineer who lives in the Lansing suburb of Okemos, said the bomber was attacked by Nazi fighter planes.

It limped home across the Adriatic Sea with a hole in its belly, hydraulic brake lines damaged and leaking fluid, a dead gunner and two wounded crew members. Van Den Berg said he and another crewman improvised two parachutes to slow the plane as it landed at an allied airfield in Foggia, Italy. Chute-dragging wasn't standard emergency procedure, but "we'd heard of some others doing it," Van Den Berg recalled. The parachutes were anchored on waistgun mounts and Van Den Berg said the crewmen pulled the rip cords as the bomber touched down. The damaged aircraft overshot the runway but didn't crash.

THE LIFE-SAVING CHUTES were cut up for souvenirs, and Den Berg's sister-in-law, Emma Ann List of Bay City, fashioned the christening gown, using thread from the cords for fancy embroidery. The gown was first worn by her son Thomas Edward List in September 1945. Krista's father, Wesley Thorp, manager of the House press room at the state Capitol, was the third infant to wear it. As a postcript to the tale, Krista Thorp will be baptized at Martin Luther Chapel in Lansing Van Den Berg recalls that the pilot of his World War II bomber was a 22-year-old Californian named Martin Luther. Activist James McClendon By RICK RATLIFF Free Press Staff Writer Dr.

James J. McClendon, a Detroit physician and civil rights activist who played a critical role in the growth of the Detroit Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, died Tuesday at Hutzel Hospital. He was 89. Dr. McClendon crusaded against police brutality in the 1930s and helped lead a fight to get black women hired in defense plants in the '40s.

While he was Detroit NAACP chapter president for eight years until 1945, the chapter grew to become the largest in the nation. Dr. McClendon "I hate injustice I just hate it," he once said. "It has no place in our society. I have believed all my life in the equality of mankind." He was an NAACP national board member for 30 years.

His death came just five days before the Detroit NAACP's annual Fight for Freedom dinner at Cobo Hall an event he helped to organize in the 1950s. "He was always committed to justice, you know. He went through a lot of things in his life, but he never lost faith," recalled Raymon Scruggs, his brother-in- law. "He was always looking on the bright side of things. His motto was that everything's all right, and if it isn't, it's going to be." Born in Rome, Dr.

McClendon graduated in 1921 from Atlanta University, and in 1926 from Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He was a Hutzel Hospital staff physician for 49 years. He was chairman of the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner in 1958 and 1959. He was a longtime member of the Second Baptist Church, the National Medical Association, the Wayne County Medical Association, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Young Men's Christian Association and past president and member from 1965-71 of the Detroit Board of Health.
