So Humphrey Bogart said to AP's Bob Thomas on "The Enforcer" set.

"Today they (gangsters) are big businessmen engaged In seemingly respectable businesses and paying income tax," said Bpgie. In this new picture he's on the side of the law, anyway. Already scores of Ltetroiters are waiting to see "The Enforcer," but not on Bogie's account. It will introduce in a featured role Seymour Tuchow, son of Morris Tuchow, of 3017 Buena Vista. On screen I understand he is to be known as Lawrence Tolan, a rather nondescript name.

But at the rate he's going, "Mickey" Tuchow will make a name for himself as they say even if it's Lawrence Tolan. starring WII.I.IAIVI IIOIMN at Young Joe Gillis GLORIA SWAN SOW as Norma Desmond Kill Oil you STKOIIIilill at Max von Mayerling Pat Neal Promoted to Top Role BY HEDDA HOPPER'S STAFF Mitt Hopper Is on Vacation HOLLYWOOD Patricia Neal, who does an excellent job as a newspaper reporter In "Three Secrets," gets a promotion in "No Woman Knows Best." In the latter she'll play the publisher of a metropolitan daily who, believing she's lost the feel of the public pulse, hires out incognito as a reporter on a smalltown weekly in an effort to rediscover the facts of American life. ON EACH of Yvonne- DeCar-lo's visits to Italy, Salvatore Guiliano, the late movie-struck "Robin Hood Bandit," of Sicily, tried to arrange a meeting with her through mutual acquaintances. They never got together. But now that Guiliano's story is to be filmed in Italy, Yvonne is being paged for the part of his girl friend.

The main drawback in the proposition is that, although her family name is Italian, she doesn't speak the language. Robert Stack joins the cast of "Rio Grande" in the role of a heavy. He'll play Mickey Roo-ney's racketeering brother. Incidentally, John Ford will have to get a name for his new picture, currently called "Rio Grande" also. Benedict Bogeaus, who's producing the Rooney film, registered the title first.

MONICA LEWIS, the singer, makes her film debut in "Excuse My Dust" at Metro. She'll play a Southern girl who tries to swipe Red Skelton from Sally Forrest. Richard Boone, former TV and Broadway actor, gets the second male lead in "Kangaroo" and a term contract at 20th. A freakish piece of luck landed him in pictures. Jack Briggs fractured a couple of ribs while playing the heavy in "The Lone Ranger" TV series.

LAST day "WHERE A I i 1 1 ii i ii I imnaiirln Dana day evening must have remembered some preposterous old fogey in his own family who worried about draughts, the Sunday newspaper and noisy children. DeGraffenreid. spoofed, bellowed and domineered his way through the role with a native maliciousness that set one's teeth on edge. SOME OTHER members of the cast were noticeably on edge.

For the first few minutes after the curtain went up on Act One, it wasn't even certain if the farce would proceed along the lines originally established by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. Robert Bryson appeared in the lead role of Newton Fuller, a Manhattan pueblo dweller who buys a place in the country. There is no water on the land, no road to the property and the friendliest neighbors are the 17-year locusts expected around the middle of the summer. When Mr.

Bryson wasn't struggling to remember his lines he was remarkably funny. These and other difficulties will probably be righted during the two-week engagement, because it's a good show. BARNEY O'ROURKE, Bettie Hyman, Treesa Way Merrill and Martha Morrison were droll and funny in extremely droll parts. O'Rourke was perhaps a bit funnier than the rest as. a Down-East hired man slowly extracting every last cent from city-farmer Fuller.

"We need another load of gravel (42)," he drawls. "Chickens like to scratch, you know." Others of note in the cast include Fred Taylor. Dianne Barry, Bruce Richards, Dolores Rashid and John Beeman. W. T.

RABE Saves Three from Water Then Dies Ignoring a heart ailment, a 60-year-old Detroiter rescued three teen-age youngsters from the choppy waters of Anchor Bay Wednesday. He then collapsed and died. Convalescing at his cottage from a recent heart attack, William Whitman, of 18740 Charleston, rushed to the rescue when he heard screams for help from two young girls and a boy. The grand part Is that everyone who knows him gives the Impression that it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. People knew him at Central Hih and Wayne University, from which he was graduated. They knew him at VYXYZ, where he used to work on "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet. They knew him as a force in the Actors Company of some three years ago. He directed "Oedipus Rex" for that group of enthusias tic young players, mostly with jobs in radio.

MICKEY STUDIED with Stella Adier in New York. He had some subway circuit roles. He played summer stock in Wooster, in 1945. lie tried out for a scholarship at the Old Vic Theater School in London. He didn't get the scholarship, for an extraordinary reason.

He was told that he was too advanced for the school. Then this year he landed an acting fellowship for graduate students at Stanford University, fust a matter of weeks ago he had the lead in a play there. A Warner Bros, scout saw the opening performance, rushed him to Hollywood for a hush-hush screen test. It was so good that Tuchow resigned the fellowship to sign a contract with Warners and become Tolan. He was put to work at once in "The Enforcer." His big cheering section here is storing up lung power.

BURT LANCASTER has a big new cheering section among the young. When "The Flame and the Arrow" opened here, I said he could be a hero to youngsters If he could hit on some character to build up with his acrobatic stunts. N'ow the Joint Estimates of Current Motion Pictures has released its child audience reaction, or "wiggle test" on the picture. "The adventurous quality of this story held the children in rapt attention from beginning to end." says the report. "The extra dividend of Burt Lancaster's spectacular acrobatics ha I them squealing with delight and jumping up and down in their sfats on more than one occasion." Burt's also a new rave for teen-agers.

One is Margaret O'Brien, who's just gone to work in a new picture, "The Romantic Age." "Wasn't Burt Lancaster wonderful when he did acrobatics in his last picture?" she asked an interviewer. "I think I'll take down Montgomery Clift and put up his picture."
