Sunday April 5,1987 Remember 50 years ago April 2,1937 The New Braunfels Spring Race Meet opens today at 2 p.m. with nearly 200 of the best horses of the ovals here to compete in 14 big days of racing. Today has been designated Texas Legislature Day and Ladies Day. Ladies will be admitted free for the opening day, and the Texas Legislature and Senate will be here in a body to give the local banktails a big sendoff. The Minneapolis Millers will encounter the Oklahoma City Indians for a second tussle today, Friday, at Landa Park with prospects of a second victory over them.

The game is called at 1 o'clock to avoid conflict with the race meet which opens Friday. April 6 is the 20th anniversary of America's entrance into the War to End Wars. On this occasion a Peace Rally has been planned, sponsored by the local Peace Committee. Through radio facilities, a national broadcast will be heard, on which such peace sponsors as Admiral Byrd. Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Emerson Fosdick will speak.

The Coma! County Medical Society met at the City Hall Wednesday evening for the election of officers for the year. Dr. A.W.C. Bergfeld will serve as president. The remaining staff selected at the meeting includes Dr.

Fred Frueholz. vice-president; Dr. Wm. Reamtsma, secretary-treasurer. The Board of Censors is made up of Dr.

R. Wright Dr. M.C. Hagler. and Dr.

H. Karbach. The Committee on Legislation and Public Relations includes Dr. Bargfald, Dr. A.J.

Hinman and Dr. Reemtsma. Earlier distilleries existed before licensing was required.

Production schedule calls for a peak of 20.000 cases monthly, vodka and gin on the market within a month after operation begins, and corn whiskey marketed within three months. Straight whiskeys can be produced within two years; bourbon, four years. In the interim, they will be brought in from Kentucky and bottled at the local plant. Tequilla from Mexico and rum from the Carribean also will be bottled here. John Connalty, Democratic candidate for governor, will shake hands in New Braunfels Wednesday.

April 11, when he brings his personalized style of campaigning to Comal County. Juanita Herring, New Braunfels High School, was chosen head cheerleader for the 1962-63 season in tryouts held by the Royal Bluettes March 22 and 23. Other cheerleaders are Ira Jung. Nancy Willlford, Linda Horny and Marsha Stephens. Alternates are Donna Grimm and: Carolyn Kuehler.

The girls will attend cheerleading school at Southern Methodist University, Dallas, this summer. Student of the Week at Canyon High School is Minnie Ruth Ewald, T8, daughter of Mrs. Herbert Ewald. Active both socially and as an athlete, Minnie made All-District for her basketball efforts during, the 1961-62 season, served as a Tri-Captain of the basketball team, as Co-Captain of the girls' volleyball team. Those sworn in included 1 new Position 7 board! member Bob Self and incumbents Dr. William Lee and Rudy Refmer. Self replaces Robert Sohm who did not seek re-election. Sworn in Tuesday night were New Braunfels High School student body representative to the board of trustees Casey RHey and John Cantu.

Cantu is the representative and Miss Riley is the alternative. After stating he expects "to perform to the best of my abilities," Max Wlnkler, winner in Saturday's Place 4 city council special election, glanced sideways at the volumes of city ordinances and codes, a drainage study and master plan update proposals before he said, "I must become more familiar with the issues facing this council." John Wltte, the 6'3" senior postman for the Smithson Valley Rangers this season, was named a third-team selection for the Class AA All-State basketball team by the Texas Sportswriters Association. Tarry Tausch. a senior at New Braunfels High School, has been selected to play on the South All- Star team in the annual High School All-Star football game, July 28. At the movies: Jeff Bridges.
