W. C. Fields has been called many things but never beautiful.

I'll grant you that there is a certain measure of beauty to the scarlet pimpernel which Fields wears in lieu of a nose, but he is no Hedy Lamarr. Hugh Herbert never has been mistaken for Mister America. Edward Everett Horton is a far cry from Adonis, and the charitable understatement is due to the Christmas spirit in the air. a a Joe Penner hai a quality of peasant atrength, but hia larga proboacia haogi two atrikea on him before tha eonteat even atarta. Brown ii reminiscent of tha Holland Tunnel, with the reservation that the Holland Tunnel baa a tiled roof and lighta which make it quit hand-torn. Perc Wettmore engaged hundreds of artisans to work on Jack Benny before hit last picture, but even in reel 1, it was no effort to know which was Jack Benny and which was Joan Bennett. Charlie Butterworth was a homely baby who refuted the old adage by growing up homely. Fat or lean, Jack Oakia is no American beauty. You may think I have drifted away from answering Cantor's' letter, but in reality, all this is part and parcel of the answer to him.

Each of these funny-faced funny men I've listed is lacking signally in beauty, but each one of them is handsomer than Cantor, which will give you a vague idea. (Courrkht. 1938) HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 28 Dear Ed. In your column of the twenty-first instant, you printed something which cut me to the quick.

'True you wrote, The aesthetic-visaged Earl Carroll has no Eddie Cantor or Charlotte Greenwood, but he has a line of girls that are prettier than Cantor; and these pretty girls will exhibit more epidermis than Miss Greenwood What do you mean, Ed, that these girls are prettier than Cantor Have you seen me lately? Don't you know that at this very moment on roadway your Broadway people of both sexes are following me? And even though I try not to listen, I can't help but overhear their remarks about me 'Isn't he a 'What gorgeous 'What kissible It's columnists like you that try to give actors like me an inferiority complex. If you will, say that I have no talent: Say I'm a bad husband; print that I neglect my children But to make light of my physical charms, who was offered $200 for one kiss by Sophie Tucker, not more than 20 years ago You've got your nerve. Please stick to writing of pictures and people, Ed, but lay off sex, you're a greenhorn on that topic. Am sending you under separate cover six of my latest photographs You'll love the one with the rose where I'm sprawled out on a tiger-skin rug. Beautifully Yours, Eddie Cantor.

A cuaaits A jrw Actresses' Names Are Foreign Stars By James S. Pooler As the old year rolls along like a nearly empty reel of movie film, we still have retrospective reports coming in. There are the views of the National Board of Reviews to be considered, but we do not intend to report at any length on their selections of the best movies, since this would be confusing to the fans here who balloted in the Free Press poll. They will compare their selections to the Film Daily poll, which does not come until early In the new year. Players Are Considered So.

Instead, we will turn to the National Board's views on the exceptional performances by players In the last year. There is no know-ine which of these performances are rated the highest, since names are listed alphabetically. But recalling these players and the movies may bring back a few polgant memories for you. So here are the ''screen performances worthy of special praise." Morley Draws Praise Robert Morley in ''Marie Antoinette." Ralph Richardson in "The Citadel" and "South Riding." Margaret Sullavan in "Three Comrades." Spencer Tracy in "Boys Town." Two things may have struck you Rbout these selections the number of men and the scarcity of women on the list, and the num ber of foreign players. Incidentally, the board rated "Grand Illusion" the best film of the year "from any country," the board placed first, "Grand Illusion." And, somehow, looking over the list of notable performances, we recall a few "bits" we would like add to the list. Davenport Cited as Judge There was Harry Davenport's grand work as the judge in "You Can't Take It With You" and the acting of all the players in that scene from the same movie when the letter from the missing daughter was read. We feel that panicky Dopey's report of what he saw in the bedroom belongs, somehow.

James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan in the scene with the straw sticking out of the wounds the baynoted dummies in "Shopworn Angel," Brian Donlcvy political boss In "In Old Chicago." Tony Martin Says He'll Stay Married Tony Martin, singing star, ar rived from Chicago Wednesday night and grinned. "I knew you'd ask me that," he said, "and the answer is definitely 'No'." The retort followed a question about rumors that he and Alice Faye are planning to separate after 14 months of marriage. Mar is scheduled to appear at the Fox Theater starting Friday, and Miss Faye was due to accompany him to Detroit, but purely in a wifely capacity. She was not with him, however.

"Alice was detained in Hollywood," he explained, "to finish a scene in her latest picture, but sha'll be here Saturday night to spend New Year's Eve with me. Alice and I are very much in love and we intend to stay that way." Martin, who has just finished picture, will return to Hollywood after his appearance here.
