Some good steelhead luck is noted along Lake Michigan at Thompson Creek and in the lower Manistique River.

Along Lake Superior, steelhead are being caught on the Tow Hearted River near Deer Park and in streams around Grand Marais. Marquette's harbor is fair for lake trout casting and trolling; whiteifsh are hitting in the St. Marys River near the Michigan Soo. Perch luck has been fair in Cedarville and Hessel bays. Try the Carp River north of St.

Ignace for steelies. steelhead are hitting off Muskegon, too. The Lower White river at Montegue is giving up small steelies, as is the Muskegon River. Lake trout luck has been good off the piers at Saugatuck, South Haven and Benton Harbor; lakers and steelhead are showing up on the St. Joseph River, upstream to Berrien Springs.

Inland, Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell have proved good for perch during daylight hours. Walleye are hitting in the evenings. Upper Peninsula fishermen have found fishing I Salmon runs around Michigan have just about ended, with the exception of the Detroit River's minor fishery at Belle Isle. Coho are just beginning to be caught there. Runs are normally quite late, peaking in late November.

Fishermen lining the Yacht Club basin report slow fishing, but that's not unusual, either. A few trailers offshore have caught some fish, and state fishery crews installed trap nets at the basin this week to collect salmon for scientific studies. Elsewhere, spawning runs of steelhead and brown trout are providing some good fishing. Lake trout and a few small, or "jack," king salmon have been caught offshore. Perch fishing is spotty on Lake St.

Clair. Some are hitting off the Clinton River spillway. Muskie luck has been low, too. Walleye are hitting Rapalas trolled off the Alter Road area. Perch luck has been better off Fighting and Grassy Islands in the Detroit River, while Lake Erie's Brest Bay is giving up excellent numbers of perch in eight to 15 feet of water.

UP IN THE Thumb, Port Sanilac is still giving up brown trout and lakers for trollers near shore and for those casting from the harbor breakwalls. A few large king salmon are still being caught. Shallow waters around Grindstone City are giving up lake trout, too. Up north along Lake Huron, Tawas Bay is good for lakers, as is the Au Sable river mouth at Oscoda. Some steelhead are hitting spawn there and upstream below Foote Dam.

O) Co; PARTS MORE Saginaw Bay perch fishing is picking up. It's fair off Bay Port, and Caseville and about three miles off the Au Gres River mouth on the north side of the bay. A few browns are hitting in the surf off the Whitney Drain near Alabaster; perch luck is good near Alabaster's gypsum loading docks. Over along Lake Michigan's shoreline, lake trout catches have been very good off the piers at Manistee and Frankfort, jigging with Swedish Pimples, while browns and steelhead continue to be caught in the surf at both places and at the piers. Some steelies have shown in the lower Platte River; steelies are hitting spawn and spoons off Pentwater and Stony Channel piers.

TRAVERSE CITY anglers are hitting whitefish on the east bay using Swedish Pimples in 90 to 100 feet of water. Both east and west arms of the bay are fair for steelhead, especially at the creek mouths and off the mouth of the Boardman River. Salmon catches have about disappeared. But jumbo perch are hitting wig-glers at Northport Bay and the Glen Lake narrows. His 24 home runs three times as many as his previous season best were second on the team. Herndon batted .292, missing only five games all year; his defensive play was a big plus. Lemon had struggled early last season, but he came on strong in the final two months.

Lemon batted .304 for the second half, lifting his overall average to .266. His 19 home runs were a personal best. Lemon was obtained from the Chicago White Sox a year ago in a trade for Steve Kemp. He said he is relieved not to have the comparison with Kemp hanging over his head. "Now It's of my own accord," he declared.

"It's my own decision to be a Detroit Tiger now. I'm going to be moving my family there. We're going to be living in Detroit, and everything's going to be different. I'm really happy." Ivie, reached at his home in Georgia, said he signed a new contract with the Tigers after negotiating with Lajoie by telephone during the past few days. Victor Gomez 18, was sentenced Wednesday. Woods was shot in the neck May 21 when he stopped at an East Side after-hours nightspot to pick up his father, according to Robert Warner, assistant county prosecutor. The prosecutor said Gomez fired the shot after robbing Woods' father and the establishment.

Gomez was convicted of attempted murder, aggravated robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. Woods testified at the Gomez trial from a wheelchair. He was Baltimore's second-round draft choice in 1978 and started several games for the Colts last season. SOCKET SETS The USA network also plans to show 40 regular season games, a few on Wednesdays, most on Thursdays, many in doubleheader packages. USA also will show 10 playoff games. This week's Thursday package was a doubleheader featuring Milwaukee at Atlanta, followed by Denver at Los Angeles. In addition, WTBS cable (Atlanta) is carrying 41 Atlanta Hawks games; WGN cable (Chicago) will carry nine Chicago Bulls games; and WOR cable (New York) will carry 29 New York Knicks games and 20 New Jersey Nets games. It used to be illegal for a cable system to pick up more than two of the superstations; that rule has been changed and it is now OK to pull in all of them.

However, some systems (such as Grosse Pointe Cable) still carry only two while leaving many channels idle with color bar test patterns. Most of these cable games can be seen on Detroit-area systems. Some will be blacked out. BLACKOUTS: The Pistons' and NBA policy on blackouts is fair and reasonable, unlike the Detroit Tigers policy on major league baseball games which often results in the Tigers ordering blackouts even when they are According to Pistons public relations director Bill Kreifeldt, the Pistons in accordance with the league's rules will order cable games blacked out only when they are playing at home or when they are televising road games back into the Detroit market. He says it is OK for cable companies to show NBA games when the Pistons are idle; it is OK for cable companies to show NBA games when the Pistons are playing on the road and not televising back to Detroit; it is OK for cable companies to show the second game of a cable doubleheader if the Piston game is over earlier that evening; it is OK for a cable company to show a Piston game on a cable station as long as that game isn't being carried by Channel 50 or being played in Detroit.

Furthermore, cable companies can show a Piston game over a superstation from the Silverdome without restraint if the nearest edge of their territory is no closer than 35 miles to the Silverdome. Unlike the dog-in-the-manger Detroit Tiger baseball blackout policy, the Pistons-NBA plan is designed to protect the home gate and the home TV ratings while allowing the fans to see as much action as they wish. Cable company technicians might want to clip this out and paste it on their control boards so that they don't unnecessarily black out NBA games, as has been the case in the past. Tonight: If you get WOR cable, you can see the New York Rangers play Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers at 9:30 p.m. Otherwise, forget it.

Saturday: College Football, ABC-TV, (Channel 7 In Detroit), noon Michigan at Illinois, a Big Ten showdown with a lot of feeling between teams. Keith Jackson will have to alter his favorite cliche by saying "It's a crisp, cool clear autumn MORNING for football," because the game kicks off at 1 1:30 a.m., Illinois time. Also, the Pistons are on Channel 50 from Atlanta at 7:35 p.m. Sunday: NBA basketball, Seattle at Milwaukee, CBS, Channel 2 in Detroit, 3:30 p.m. Will CBS show the NBA the respect it deserves this season? Will Channel 2 show CBS telecasts the respect they deserve? Will Bill Russell still giggle and mumble, or will he put his considerable knowledge into understandable comments? But Pistons administrative director Tom Wilson said Thursday that others might be added as the season goes along if the team continues to do well. Last Sunday's game drew an "eight" rating and a 12 percent share of TV sets in use, the best-rated Piston telecast in five years. LOCAL PAY TV: ON-TV, the scrambled pay signal that operates over Channel 20, will carry 15 games this season, up five from last year.

The first will be next Wednesday against Indiana from the Silverdome. If the team stays hot, ON may contract for additional games, according to program director John Tuohey. "Plus, we have an option on home playoff games," he added. Returning play-by-play man will be the crisp Don Shane; color commentator will be either ex-Piston Curtis Rowe or ex-U-D coach Willie McCarter. Both are auditioning.

CBS NETWORK: Originally, this was to be the year of the shrinking NBA package, in which the network cut back to only four regular season games, plus the all-star game and playoffs. However, due to the National Football League players strike, CBS had to go begging to the NBA, which it once had treated with disdain, for extra Sunday games. The good news is that CBS will show a game this Sunday, Seattle and Milwaukee, at 3:30 p.m. The better news is that it will be carried by CBS's local affiliate, WJBK (Channel 2), which in the past has snubbed the NBA even worse than did the parent network. Jim Harrington, vice-president for program planning at CBS Sports, says "We're playing it by ear" on any more special Sunday telecasts this fall.

"Everything is so last-minute around here right now with the NFL negotiations going on," he said Thursday from New York. "We have talked about the possibility of adding other games." Back to describe at least the first one is the team of Dick Stockton and Bill Russell, the former Celtics great. Russell, under fire from critics, fans and his bosses for his sub-par performance in last spring's playoffs, has been taking speech lessons. Right now, he's back with CBS on a game-to-game basis.
