fl-B Monday, Nov. 28, '66 DETROIT FREE PRESS CONWAY'S FAST COMEBACK 'Rango '--Hurried into Merle's Spdt Monday Radio YOUR BEST BETS: Singer Nancy Ames and comedian Leonard Barr are guests on the "Roger Miller Show" at 8:30 p.m. on Q. Steve Franken is an American gunrunner who offers to sell arms to the highest bidder in "Rat Patrol" adventure at 8:30 p.m. on Q.

Steve Franken stars. Boxer Sugar Ray Robinson makes his dramatic debut in "Run For Your Life" at 10 p.m. on Q. He plays a fighter accused of taking a dive after he collapses during a fight. Carol Lawrence is featured.

ill Jij Ray Robinson, Ben Gazzara on "Run For Your Life" BY HAL HUMPHREY Special to the Free Press HOLLYWOOD Tim Conway suggests I get this column about his new Rango show out right away. It doesn't start on ABC until Jan. 13, but with networks nervously changing shows every few weeks now a star can't be sure how long he'll be in the game. "Our first show opens on Friday the 13th," says Tim. "That was the same day I bought my Edsel.

We're also going in against the Friday Night Movie and the second half of 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' where Berle was. Oh well, if we get to stay on as long as he did, it will take us through the rainy season here and at least the swimming pools will be open. After that, we can do the show door-to-door." To give you an idea how fast things are moving in the TV world these days, Tim was out on a personal appearance tour plugging the coming of the "Rango" series for the 1967-68 season. Suddenly he got a call from ABC telling him to get back to Hollywood quick because "you're going into our second season." "I think I only got to two cities with my 'He's coming' tour and had three more 'He's coming' speeches when I got this 'Hurry up, you're on next' call," recalls Tim, still dazed. He thought it was kind of strange for ABC to send him out on the road this early to plug a new series for the fall of '67, but now Tim realizes the network is beginning to operate on a continuous rotation policy.

When your show isn't actually on the air dur- was to fly in on a wire. I decided to do 'Rango'. Listen, there's really nothing new, and I've been around a long time. I remember Margaret O'Brien." With Tim in his 'Rango' role are Norman Alden who plays the head Ranger and Guy Marks as a dumb Indian can't track a named Pink Cloud. Tim admits that "Rango" is in the "Get Smart" genre, but as he said, there's really nothing new.

It is the way things are done that counts, he adds, and Tim has plenty of fans who like the way he does them. "I'm loose about this," says Tim. "My attitude Is, 'well, thats as funny as I get, I could go back to Cleveland tomorrow and figure what happened out here was all very nice, but now it's over. I don't mean I'm telling the audience to go to hell, but what's the use of making a big thing about all this? "Hey, did you know Mary Ann and I had our fourth child about six weeks ago? He's Jamie Dalton. Dalton's my wife's name, so all the kids are stuck with that.

We had a child for every year 'McHale's Navy was on. Thank God it was finally cancelled." Tim, his cast and crew just finished shooting their second episode of and after looking at them he's decided they're pretty good. "I suggested we just turn these two over to ABC and over and over. Maybe no-body'd know the difference. The laugh-track is the same, too, no matter if the shows are funny or not." CBE Lift Hrts.

Dicklnsoi 4 P.M. WJR-News TIM CONWAY: "As I went out the door someone said hello and offered me 17 weeks lng one of ABC's first, second, third or fourth seasons they have you touring the country to acquaint your TV constituents with your next series. "I WAS saying good-by to ABC and 'McHale's but as I went out the door somebody said hello and offered me 17 weeks with just about whatever new show I would pick," recounts Tim. "Then Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas told my agents about which I guess you'd call a comedy western about a Texas Ranger. It's not as wild as 'McHale's I mean we're not wiping whipped cream off our face every time we come through the door.

"Well, anyway, I didn't think I ought to take the first thing that came along, so I waited and read about 10 other scripts for series.
