('(inversions Harder (I). Flfldjmil Harder. BY BOB LATSHAVV As great an exhibition of clutch football as has ever been seen in Detroit earned the Lions a berth in the National League championship playoff for the second time in the club's history. It was a brilliant, hard-hitting Lion team which handed the Los Angeles Rams a 31-21 setback in the murky fog of Briggs Stadium to qualify for the NFL championship berth against the Cleve-" land Browns next Sunday. Fittingly, it was the Old Pros Pat Harder, Bob Hoernsche-meyer and Bobby Layne who paced this triumph, the ninth in 10 games for Detroit.

But the victory must be classed as a team accomplishment. ALTHOUGH THE final margin was 10 points, the Lions had to score a touchdown in the final minute to clinch the victory. They refuced to fold after they saw a 21-7 margin shrink to a mere three points, 24-21, with just two minutes and 45 seconds left in the game. Much of the credit for the Linns' victory, which snapped an eight-game Log Angeles winning streak, must go to the Unerarn. Both the offensive and defensive lines outplayed the Rams.

The defense kept the explosive Ram offense bottled up except for a brief period in the fourth period when they scored 14 points. One of those touchdowns came on a break and the other on a brilliant 57-yard punt return. IF ONE MAN could be credited with a major portion of the Lion victory, it would have to be the veteran Harder. Pat scored a pair of touchdowns and kicked a 43-yard field goal and four points after touchdown for 19 points. He also was one of the key figures in the Lion pass protection free Prn Tboto bj WALL? It was obvious that the Rams feared the, Layne-to-Cloyce Box passing punch.

They put two and sometimes three men on Box. That was all Layne needed. He switched to Leon Hart, who had one of his best days, and Doak Walker as pass receivers and utilized the running of Harder and Hunchy. HOW THIS strategy worked is told in the statistics. Harder ran for two touchdowns, Hunchy for one.

Walker, who also played a great game, passed to Hart for the other tally. Box He caught two passes for 20 yards but made the other fellows look good while leading the defenders around the field. Defensively, Jim Doran, La-Verne Torgeson and Fum Mc-Graw were the standouts, but there it would be unfair to single out any one player. Lou Creekmur, for example, stopped Dan Towler less than a yard from the goal line to end a Ram threat.
