Specials Labor Department figures. As wages have climbed, so have living costs and Federal taxes. An analysis of Labor Department wage figures for 13 occupations showed that the weekly earnings of employes in manufacturing industries averaged $23.86 in 1939. THEY AVERAGED $54.94 in 1949. But after allowances for tax deductions and the decreased purchasing power of the dollar, the adjusted weekly income in 1949 declined to $32.17 in terms of 1939 purchasing power.

Soft coal miners are among those with the best net improvement. White-collar workers and persons who live on fixed incomes such as pensions are affected most by the rise in taxes and living costs. A pensioner who could make ends meet on $35 a week in 1939 finds that his purchasing power in 1949 declined to $20.69. THE AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT said the annual cost of the yearly family food "market basket" has dropped almost $100 from its postwar peak. Its retail cost in January was $615, a drop of $7 from December, it added.

That compares with the postwar peak cost of $713 in July 1948. The "market basket" contains foods equal to those eaten by an average family of three in a year's time in the prewar period TOGETHER with Social Security benefits, the pension guarantees the workers payments of $100 or more a month, the company said. The company said that any increase in Social Security payments would not result in reduction of benefits under the pension plan. JO I 8J Its this at the inquest into the tragic blast. The inquest is being conducted by Oakland County Coroner John D.

Monroe. FIVE PERSONS were killed when the Mother and Son Antique Shop, 720 N. Woodward, was demolished at 9:30 p. m. last Dec.

11. On the stand were Patrolmen Roland Holmquist and Lamar Gilchrist. Both said Holmquist had warned Arthur Wilson, 49, of Dearborn, a customer, and Wilson Jones, 47, co-owner of the shop, not to go back inside. Jones and Wilson were outside checking on gas fumes, which had filled the building and appeared to be seeping from the ground near the front door. They ignored the officer's warning.

At about the same time, Fire Inspector Lee Carroll entered the store. The store blew up almost immediately. BESIDES WILSOX, Jones and Carroll, Mrs. Ruth Bramson, of Bloomfield Hills, and Mrs. Edith Jones, co-owenr and mother of Wilson Jones, were killed.

Fire Capt. Stanley Peberell testified that the department had received two calls from the store reporting a gas leak. Carroll, sent out at the first call, telephoned back that the building was "charged with gas" and the leak was in the main outside, Peberell said. Peberell was about to call Fire Chief Vern Griffith when he heard the blast. Griffith, next on the stand, testified he thought the mains should have been replaced by the Consumers Power Co.

F. II. BOXNELL, of Jackson, Consumers Power superintendent, said the mains in that area were of cast iron and "never had caused trouble by breaking." Consumers officials had mapped out a program with Birmingham officials in 1948 for replacement of mains, he said. Dates Listed for Police Examinations Police Commissioner George F. Boos announced the dates for examination for promotions in the department.

The examinations will be held at Cass Tech High School. The dates are: For detective sergeant and detective lieutenant, April SO; uniformed lieutenant, May uniformed sergeant, May 21 and detective June 4. Vernor Stakoe's Food 13537 Michigan Fulton, Richards' counsel, introduced a script which he said was that of their broadcast over the ABC network March 9, 1949. THIS WAS shortly before an FCC hearing was scheduled to open on news distortion charges against Richards and on applications to renew the licenses of his stations.

The stations are KMPC here, WJR, in Detroit, and WGAR, in Cleveland. The hearing was postponed, and opened here March 13. The script referred to sworn statements made by George Lpwin, Maurie Starrells and Clete Roberts, all former KMPC newsmen, regarding charges of anti-Semitism and political bias. The script also referred to an auto accident involving Mrs. Roosevelt.

Robert L. Horn, another former KMPC news staffer, has testified that Richards asked him if a news item could be made to appear hat Mrs. Roosevelt was intoxicated at the time. Fulton introduced the script after requesting that Horn's original affidavit, taken by an FCC representative in Philadelphia some two years ago, be shown him so he could determine if it substantiated Horn's testimony on the stand.

EARLIER, HORN' had testified that when he first went to work at KMPC in April, 1946, Richards was not in town, and that other members of the staff, including Charles Teas, had passed on to him what they said was the news policy of the station. It included, Horn said, that the CIO, Negroes, Jews, the Roosevelt family and the New Deal should never be presented in a favorable light. Sanders Cream or Jelly Eggs XM lb.
