As for Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, he is handicapped because the President quite frankly runs the Navy. Pearson said that the Navy is a one-man, full-time Job and because the President insists in running it along with his other duties, it was not in an alert condition at Pearl Harbor and for months afterward.

He warned his listeners, however, against pessimism as regards the outcome of the war. "Democracies are slow to action," he said, "but once they get going nothing can stop them. We are now definitely on the aggressive side and victory is in sight if we really work at it. "Hitler has met decisive defeat in Russia because the Soviet armies are still intact. CALLAGHAN Free Vmt Staff Writer A supreme effort by all members of the United Nations, working in as perfect co-ordination as possible, might well bring a victory over Germany by the end of 1943. This was the prediction made Friday by Drew Pearson, writer of the column, Washington Merry-Go-Round, which appears dally in the Free Press. Pearson, who addressed a Town Hall audience in the Cass Theater, discussed the Solomons and North African campaigns. "The Solomons action, In its early days," he pointed out, "was entered into without the long preparatory period which preceded the North African campaign. SERIOUS LOSSES "As a result there were serious losses in men and ships which might have been avoided.

On the second day of the invasion, the Navy was caught napping by a much inferior Jap naval force which carried out a hit-and-run attack on our forces. The next day our naval forces left the Marines stranded on the beeches with only a part of their equipment and they were able to hold out for the next week through superhuman efforts." NOTHING TO CHANCE The North African plan left nothing to chance, he continued. "The only stroke of unexpected luck was the presence in Africa of Admiral Darlan, who was there only because he had been called to the sick bed of his son," Pearson said. "Darlan's action in railing upon the colonial French to aid the British-American forces saved countless lives." President Roosevelt's only weakness as a leader, he said, is his inability to fire anyone he likes personally. "As a result, when we should have a cabinet streamlined for war," he added, "we have the most soggy, the most deplorable cabinet ever gathered together in the last 20 years." However, Pearson said, Henry L.

Stimson, secretary of war, although 75 years old, has surrounded himself with aggressive young men, so that the War Department is the best and most efficient war branch of the Government. But the big thrill the one that Halsell says makes him shake when he tells about it came in battling a terrific storm for two hours over Australia before the pilot finally managed to set the bomber down on a little-used commercial airfield barely big enough to accommodate it. "The storm clouds looked like land when we first sighted them," Halsell relates.

"I thought it was Australia but it turned out to be the roughest weather I have ever seen. We had to fly at 300 feet in order to see the ground so we could navigate by map. Our generators had given out and we couldn't use our radio. BARELY MISSED CRASH "It got so black we couldn't see anything for a time. Suddenly a lighthouse loomed up right in front of us.
