Oct. 3 You wouldn't know by looking at the football schedule that this Is only the first week-end in October. Not with Duke and Tennessee clasing in their annual affair, con ference races getting under way and such intersectional battles as Southern Methodist's visit to Ford-ham and Ohio State's long trek to Southern California.

Most of the nation's major elevens are busy, some of them for the first time. Big Ten Action There ia plenty of action In the Big Ten. Iowa and Michigan will open the title chase at Ann Arbor, and then there ia Indiana's clash with Notre Dame. Purdue, In a hurry to forget all about Vanderbilt, will colide with pure Pittsburgh, and Wisconsin will be the test for the remodeled Marquette machine. Minnesota is idle.

Fordham, generally recognized as the Mr. Big of the East, has backs to burn, but there is some doubt that the forward wall is made of the granite of old. Matty Bell, of the Mustangs, says that his sophomore ace, Howard (The Red) Maley, will be the hottest back on the field. If Duke should triumph over the Tennessee Volunteers, the Blue Devils will have crossed one of their major obstacles toward a perfect season. In eight years, Wallace Wade has been able to trounce the Volunteers but twice.

Across the Country Two clubs not expected to do too much in their own leagues Ohio State, of the Big Ten, and Southern California, of the Pacific Coast hold the intersectional spotlight on the Sunset Coast. They will share Interest with the Rose Bowl Stanford eleven against UCLA and the Washington-Oregon State battle. The fans also will be watching the outcome of the California- Washington State struggle and, coming a bit farther East, In the Denver-Baylor effort and the Colo rado State-Wyoming clash. Big six champion and the Rose Bowl loser, will take its first 1941 step against Iowa State, always a Husker menace, in a struggle that shares the Midwest limelight with the Big Ten. Southwest Scene In the Southwest, Texas will turn the machine that squelched Colorado a week ago upon the Tigers of Louisiana State, and Arkansas Is the conference foe of Texas Christian.

The reconstructed Cadets of Texas shouldn't be troubled too much by little Texas AAH. The East' will have such contests as Brown at Columbia, Harvard at Penn, Navy and West Virginia, Cornell and Syracuse, Colgate and Penn State, and Army maneu vers against The Citadel. The intersectional schedule will pit Yale's first nongraduate coached machine against Virginia, Northwestern against Kansas State, Villanova against Centre, Illinois against Ohio University of Miami, and Boston University against King George's unbeaten colt, Big Game, won the Champagne htaKes recently for his filth vie tory of the British racing season. VV. EDGAR The Wayne University band put on a great show Friday night In the University of Detroit Stadium, but the Tartar football forces couldn't come close to equaling the musicians' feat and lost to the Titans in their annual meeting, 54 to 0. The Wayne eleven wasn't a factor after the first three minutes of play and would have been spnred a great deal of humiliation had the game ended right there. Inasmuch as the rules call for 60 minutes of play, however, the Tartars had to submit to one of the worst beatings ever absorbed by a Titan rival. Scores In 11 Tlays It took U.

of D. just 11 plays after the opening kickoff to register its first touchdown when a mixture of sweeping end runs by Tippy Madarik, sophomore left halfback, and powerful line smashes by Al Schmidt, another sophomore, culminated with Madarik banging his way Into the end zone to complete a 64-yard march. The Titans weren't finished, however, and they entertained the crowd of 17,659 with an aerial circus that netted six touchdowns, THE AWFUL TRUTH Wayne University established a new high in football futility Friday night in losing to the University of Detroit, 54 to 0. Detroit's running and passing attack netted 556 yards; Wayne's combined attack finished with a net loss of seven yards. Detroit gained 293 yards rushing and 263 passing.

and little Mickey McLaughlin added variety by running 53 yards for a touchdown in the fourth period. Madarik Is Star It was Madarik who proved to be the star of the rout. After registering the first touchdown, he passed to Link for the second score to open the second period, followed with a toss to Link for a touchdown in the third, then switched to Howard Keating for the fourth marker. Here he turned the passing assignment over to Henry Piper, who promptly tossed to Sophomore Bob Petz for the fifth touchdown. At this stage McLaughlin took over the task of leading the assault and set the stage for the sixth marker by dashing around right end to the five-yard line, from where Al Goodrich plunged over.

Dashes 53 Yards A few minutes later Mickey sprinted 53 yards Into the end zone, then capped his performance by passing to Don Hughes for the eighth six-pointer. Only twice did the Tartars move beyond midficld and both times breaks took them there. In the first period they got to the Titan 22 when Link allowed one of Oerald Schnelker's punts to graze his body and roll away, Frank Sabo recovering it at that point. Then, on the opening play of the third period, Link took the kickoff and tried to lateral to Madarik. Tippy fumbled and Nick Cherup recovered on the Titan 18, where U.

First Time In History When Wright scored Its decision over Southwestern, it marked the first time that the Pilots had ever beaten the Prospectors on the gridiron. The game was won in the last three minutes when Lafayette Hooven tossed a Bix-yard pass to Joe LaPlante in the end zone. Redford used a touchdown, a field goal and a safety to bring its victory over Western. Jim Ali-ber plunged one yard on the first play of the second quarter for the touchdown.

The safety came In the fourth period when Don Mc-Cabe, Western back, was trapped behind his own goal. A few minutes later Fred Spjeldet place-kicked a field goal from the 18-yard line. Denby topped Northeastern on the margin of a touchdown scored by Henry Bucciero on a two-yard smash in the third quarter. Eastern also waited until the late minutes of the game to win. With a minute and a half to play, Dick Dieters, a substitute halfback, passed from the Northern 25 to Quarterback Al Woznicki, who took the ball on the 16 and skipped over unmolested.

UthMetamora Races Today The eleventh running of the Metamora races will occur Satur day over the course on the Alger Farm in Oxford Township, Oakland County. The first of the seven events will get under way at 2 p. m. Four flat races and three steeplechases will comprise the program which has attracted outstanding horses, according to William R. Clark, chairman of the race committee.

Among the events are the Frank J. Navin Memorial, a two- mile brush steeplechase, and the Estelle F. Grennan Memorial, a gruelling two-and-one-half mile run. Bearcats Win, 7-0, on Final Period Drive MT. PLEASANT, Oct.

And with that victory Hamtramck became the only unbeaten team on East Side and moved into an almost secure position as the title favorite for that division of the City League. Until that break, it appeared as If the powerful, evenly matched elevens would battle to a scoreless tie in what was billed as the most important game of the year on the East Side. It was caused by a bad pass from center which went through Fullback Virgil Florea's hands and rolled 20 yards back of the line of scrimmage. Three Hamtramck linemen smashed through and recovered on the 3-yard line. Over on 2nd Play On the first play Jack Ford made one yard on a plunge at center, and on the next play he cut off his left tackle for the score.

There were slightly more than three minutes to play. Up to that time Hamtramck had been unable to penetrate Pershing's 15, while on three occasions the Doughboys got inside the Hamtramck 10. Pershing's best chance for a score came on the final play of the second half and it fell short by two inches. With one second to play in the period Florea passed to End Ray Weber, who apparently was standing on the goal line.
