THE DETROIT FREE PRESS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1941 Amusements. Theater 1 JIMMIE FIDLER The Film 'Citizen Kane' at Michigan an Outstanding Picture Tim Holt Drops i Chaps to Play used effectively heretofore in other Dramatic Role totaoataoafx HigginsReturns toClubRoyale Peter Biggins, popular young gong star with the debonair delivery that made his previous appearance so successful, returns with a Eirthday Party Revue to celebrate the second annlvesary of Club Royale this week-end. Others who will be sharing the club's celebration are Charlie and Shlrlie McKowan, tap stars who offer both character and eccentric dance styles; also Park and Clifford, ballroom pair whose modern and Latin dances justify their billing of "poetry In motion." Margaret Faber's line of tall girls appear in new production themes, as Dick Worthlngton presents the acts and Pamela Brltton sings the lyrics with Don McGrane's orchestra. HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 26 Was that night club appearance of Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard intended to distract reporters' attention from a contemplated Mexican step? Liz (mintess) Whitney's latest adorer is Jack Sterling and she's introducing him to her kinfolk to prove it.

Make a bet that Jessie (British, star) Matthews, a superb' dancer, will team with Fred Astaire in his next filmusical. Those Lee Bowman-Helen del Valle rumors persist, but they both deny. Two studios are mulling thrill yarns about Burma Road but Warner Brothers own the title, "Burma Road." Wotzis about firewords between Producer Howard Hughes and Director ieo Mcuarey Tim (cowboy star) Holt steps into straight drama with a lead In Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Does that millionaire comedy producer know that his estranged dotter, living in a thirty-dollar-a-month apartment, is At the Cinema Mireille Balin, prominent French screen star, plays the leading feminine role with Jean Gabin in "Pope le Moko" now at the Cinema. June St. Clair Star of National Show "Giggles and Gals" has Joe De-Rita and Harry "Boob" Meyers furnishing the giggles, as glamorous June St.

Clair leads the gals in the disrobing department of the new revue at the National theater this week. Two and a half hours of patter and pulchritude are presented by the big new traveling company, which includes straight-man Dudley Douglas, exotic dancer Ona Lee, and unveilers Ann Valentine, Belva Williams and Gaye Knight. Bob Rogers keys the production numbers of the 16 chorines with his tenor songs, and Haynes and Perry add smart vaudeville routines. i 'J L-. i y'r ll it I i 4 il a LJ 1 Today's Program at Your Favorite Theater THEATERS MARKED WITH A ARE CO-OPERATIVE THEATERS BY FRANK T.

GILL Ytt Prcu Holloa Picture editor FOR those who contend that he Is an "enfant terrible" in the theater, a brash, intractable, precocious youngster fascinated by glittering new baubles, the stage, radio and motion pictures, Orson Welles has a confounding answer "Citizen Kane," which opened Friday at the Michigan. In this Impressive and important production, i Welles is revealed as having absorbed a tremendous amount of the tricks and tradition of the theater, and still more, that he possesses the skill and craftsmanship to adapt such knowledge to motion pictures in a masterful way. Adroit Use of Formulae Moviegoers, accustomed to the more obvious and orthodox Hollywood productions, may be somewhat nonplussed by Welles technique. He brings into play tried and true formulae of motion-picture making the flashback story, trick lightning and angle photographyand makes them appear novel and arresting. Actually the only innovation in his technique is in the adroitness with which he handles it.

Strictly speaking, "Citizen Kane" is not a drama, but a succession of dramatic scenes and sequences coalesced in a single idea the search for the meaning of Charles Foster Kane's last word on his deathbed, "Rosebud." Around this one word, Welles and his script colleague, Herman J. Mankiewlcz, have employed a clever artifice whereby, while actors in the picture search for the clew to this word, only the audience finds it out in the end. Gregg Toland's photography, with its accent upon camera angles and depth of focus, adds immeasurably to the impresslveness of this film, and the restrained lighting- i trying to borrow money lor rent? Adelaide (society lass) Moffett and Joe Frisco are about to team for a jIY stage venture. Studio medics have ordered Rita Hayworth on an avocado diet to build her weight for strenuous dance routines In "Eadio Was a Lady." Bells to Katherine Hepburn, who got Dan Tobin (for two years her leading man in "Philadelphia an MGM con tract. Cobina Wright, chosen to replace Maureen O'Hara Hollywood productions heightens the dramatic intensity of each scene and the production as a whole.

Magnificent Acting Super acting Is provided by every member of this practically unknown cast, with Welles in the title role, contributing a sensitive, dominant and full-blooded perform ance. Josopn cotten, as nis ciose friend. Jededian Leiand, is mag nificent in his smooth balancing of pathos and comedy. Dorothy Co-mingore, besides characterizing the somewhat pathetic Susan Alex ander with depth of feeling, also reveals a surprising musical talent when she manages to sing several arias sustalnedly off pitch; no mean feat for a singer. Everett Sloane, George Coulouris, Ray Col' lins, Agnes Moorhead, Ruth War wick and Erskine Sanford are indi vidually and collectively excellent.

Definitely the life story of the ruthless arrogant, egocentric and unhappy Charles Foster Kane, is a motion picture which an movie' goers should see, despite the fact that it is a film for emotionalists, rather than rationalists, wherein the realities of the story are often overshadowed by the traditional tricks of the theater. But Welles achieves this effect with finesse. Comedy Also "West Point Widow," a pleasing romantic comedy about the wife of a West Point undergraduate who has to keep her marriage a secret, is the companion film this week. Ann Shirley, Richard Denning and Richard Carlson have the starring roles and do Justice to the script. Frances Gifford and Janet Beecher are prominent in the supporting cast.

Latins on the Loose "Two Latins from Manhattan" provides laughs for the second half of the program, with Joan Davis as a zany press agent faced with the non-arrival of a Latin dancing team. To bridge the gap, without letting the boss in on the secret, she presses her two roommates, Jinx Falkenburg and Joan Woodbury, Into service as Latins from Manhattan. There is a Doy friend peeved at the deception, and determined on an expose, a meddlesome immigration inspector, and a lot of others who become involved in this tune-trimmed trifle, keyed to a fast pace. Miss Davis is the life of the party, while the others come through capably. Dance Team Starts 3rd Week at Congo Bright pink suits adorn Buck and Bubbles for their rhythm nonsense as they swing into a third week at Club Congo.

They get off to keyboard contrast, with Bubbles Singing, as they give "Kiss Me Again" its original tempo then jive It as they do in Harlem. Buck's piano antics and trumpet blasting and Bubbles with his trombone add to the musical fun. Bette St. Clair again takes the vocals for the Club Congo orchestra, as Cholly and Dotty offer a smart tap and the Four Jitterbugs stomp into all-out swing. A bit of back-wash from that long ago scrap of our own, labeled Civil War, creeps into the movie column this morning, with the presence on the Fox screen of "Belle Starr." You may not be aware that Belle was a more or less fabled Missouri lass who refused to be liked just because the rest of the Southerners had laid down their arms, and didn't make any bones about her determination to raise several kinds of rumpuses by joining a band of guerillas led by Capt. Sam Starr, in the person of rone o'her than Randolph Scott. Gene Tierney plays the girl who finds herself left alone, save for a Negro mammy, after her father lias been murdered by renegades masquerading as Federal soldiers, and the family homestead burned to the ground, A'o Surrender for Belle Gene's brother (John Shepperd), a Confederate officer, is all for peace, but not Gene. She gets up Into the hills, teams up with Starr, who is a dashing fellow with an Ingratiating smile, and what she does until she is shot by a traitorous white while riding to save her husband she's married Scott In the meantime makes for plenty of action, against a technicolor background that helps to hold interest. Gene plays the heroine with vim and vigor and a bit of venom, and boosts her rating as an actress to an appreciable degree.

The scene In which she learns that many of those fighting with the outfit are only bandits, and her efforts to Save Scott are handled effectively. Scott makes Capt. Starr a convincing daredevil in a story that frequently falls into the conventional pattern of westerns.
