MEDFORD. MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1948 PAGE THREE ON THE HOME FRONT MEDFORD TRIBUNE News From Jackson County for. Men in the Armed Services The Mail Tribune suggests you clip and mail this news roundup to a relative or friend in service. Date. Letters have become very important since the war started and scattered the men and women of America all over the lace of the globe.

Boys seldom ever are very keen about writIng letters and mostly make chore of it in school but now letters are one of the most important parts of their lives. Much of the news printed in this column for servicemen comes from letters and recently Lt. John Koppen wrote an interesting one to M. D. Field.

lather of one of his former Medlord chums, Don Field John, a transport pilot with the AAF, was in north Africa at the time and wanted to find out the whereabouts of Don. He wrote longingly of the root beer and fudge feeds gang used to cook up in the Field kitchen while in school, and asked about several members of his boyhood crowd. Lt. Koppen wrote that day or before he happened on to Lt. Lucian Smith, a school friend of both he and Don, and that! Smith was on his way to China.

The meeting took place on African air field. Smith is an an aerial navigator with the AAF. When Mr. Field answered the letter he wrote John about several of his friends, among other things telling him that Don Field is now a lieutenant in the air force, is stationed in England and that he flies fighter planes The last time Don wrote home he vowed that he'd never leave Medford again after returning home from the war. The news about a fourth member of the old crowd is not so good.

Lt. Gordon Benson has not been heard from since the fall of Bataan and it is supposed that he is a prisoner of Japanese. Lt. Benson was also a fighter pilot with the air force. Since the Home Front carried the news about Jackson county's terrible January weather, its no more than fair to report now that February was quite the reverse with balmy, sunny weather which brought out the daffodils.

Little brother is playing marbles. sister begs for ice cream cones Huhrers SATURDAY SPECIAL BY REQUEST! Aunt Martha's Chocolate Fudge CAKE Again we have been asked to feature this delicious cake. A rich chocolate layer cake filled with walnuts and iced with a luscious fudge icing. ea. Nuhrers For Fine Cakes and Pastries and dad is spading the family back yard for a victory garden.

That garden is going to be mighty important, what with the rationing of so many canned and dried foods. The home town is sort of bulging at the sides these days, with every dwelling full to overflowing and empty houses and rooms a thing of the past. When the ration board counted up after the last registration was found books had been issued to 16,281 people, which means population increase of 4,000 in the last two years. Patriotic Medford citizens sold 33 shotguns to the government this week after a call had been sent out for the arms. They are to be used by military and civilian guards, thereby releasing rifles for combat use.

Ap proximately 200 guns were turned over by owners in Klamath Falls, A Ashland, Grants Pass, Marshfield and Medford. Medford has been experiencing a "run" on shoe repair shops. It seems that when shoe rationing was announced everyone de cided it would be a good idea to have some of the old shoes fixed up with the result that in a few days the shops were so full the workmen could scarcely get around. A rather unusual honor has been given two Medford men. for their names were inserbed on bombs before they were loaded on an American bomber in Tunisia.

Lt. Martin Luther, valley resident now bomber pilot with the AAF in Tunisia, wrote friends here that he chalked the names of Ralph G. Bardwell and George M. Roberts on bombs and that the one labelled "Bard" made a clear hit on an Axis transport. It seems that the inscribing of names on bombs is an old air force custom.
