12 00 Sign Off FRIDAY 00 Newt CBS 05 Rise 'N Shine 7 00 Breakfast Edition News 7:15 Weathercast Fewer Movies Production In HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Movie- town made some of its best pic turesand some of its worst in 1958, a year that could hardly be called a howling financial success But a handful of quality films established a trend which most cinema folks ajree will continue in 1959, and for yerS to come. Fewer flicks will be made in 1959 (a new low of 194 features were produced in 4958; but they will continue to improve in quality and cost. This year's goodies were most expensive in history "Auntie Maine," "Gigi. Cat on a Hot Tin Root," "Teacher's Pet," "Ver tigo and Peyton Place, which turned out to be one of the big- money makers. Perfect Furlough, The Young Lions," "The Old Man and the Sea" were counted among the best pictures of 1958, too.

But perhaps the best of the lot was The De fiant Ones," which won critical praise from everyone. Ihese pictures overshadowed some of the bomos that embarrass Hollywood. Though they were money-makers among teen-agers, science fiction and horror epics bounced to new lows, with the worst of the lot being crime setisationals. "Girls, Guns and Gangsiers," "I Was a Teenage Werewolf," "Hot Rod Gang and The Curse of the Faceless Man" represented colos sal cinematic trash. For the first time in many years Hollywood tailed to come up with any bright, new stars in 1958.

The top roles continued to fall to gray ing older stars, or to the crop of young Actors Studio performers who invaded the town two years ago. Top performances already be ing rumored as Oscar material- were turned in by Elizabeth Taylor on a Hot Tin Spen cer Tracy Last tony uurtis Defiaht and Marlon Brando Young uions i. During 1958 many top-notchers were filmed, but will not be seen by the bulk of American movie- goes until next year amone them ine Journey with ul Brvnner and Deborah Kerr, and "Inn of tho Sixth Happiness," starring Ingrid tsergman and curt Jurgens. Both were produced abroad. The Buccaneei." another multi million-dollar exiravaganza (starring Brynner ana Charlton Heston) holds promise of capturing a large audience and considerable income.

wnat else is in store for 1959? Foremost is MGM's "Ren Hnr" without argument the most pensive turn ever produced. It will i is i Slaied For This Year cost 15 million dollars, and should be ready for viewing late next year. Also on tap is "Some Like it Hot," Marilyn Monroe's first picture in two years. A kaleidoscope of block-busters will come tumbling out of Hollywood to woo the 1959 televiewer away from the family set. Here are some samples of what is heading your way: "Porgy and Bess," Sam Gold-wyti's all-Negro musical film version of Gershwin's famed operetta; "The FBI Story," starring Jimmy Stewart; "Green Mansions" with Tony Perkins and Audry Hepburn; "Never So Few" with Frank Sinatra; and Alfred Hitchock's "North by Nortnwest" with Cary Grant and Deboiah Kerr.

Add to that list "The Diary of Anne Frank," Lana Turner in "Im itation of Life," "This Earth is Mine" starring Rock Hudson, and "Rally 'Round the Flag," and it becomes apparent Hollywood is pulling out all the stops. The new year could be a "make or break" 12 months for movies, and the men who make the cameras turn are determined to "make it" big.
