Anderson that the recent government order curtailing wheat will cause Oregon's livestock industries to "suffer terrifically." The governor urged that the order be changed immediately.

In a telegram sent Anderson yesterday Governor Snell said: WFO-144 is demoralizing the poultry and livestock industries of this state. Liquidation is go ing out of bounds and producers are in a state of panic. Wheat is the only grain available to our poultry and livestock pro ducers. Only 3,000,000 bushels would be needed until new crop wheat is available. There are over 50,000,000 bushels available in this area.

Our agricul tural industries this state will suffer terrifically unless some thing is done immediately to change this order." State Agriculture Director E. L. Peterson is now in the nation's capital to attempt to persuade Anderson to change the order. More Fertilizer Made Available Washington, March 1 Wi The agriculture department told Senator Cordon Ore.) today fruit growers in the Pacific northwest would have more fertilizer available this year than last. Cordon asked about the situation after Oregon growers estimated fertilizer would be scarce.

They said exports might deplete U.S. stocks. The department told Cordon in a letter that for every ton of ammonium nitrate exported three tons were imported and the supply will be substantially greater than last year. It said a price situation In Canada which prevented exportation of fertilizer to this country had been solved and more of it should come across the border. The department also said army ordnance plants manufacturing fertilizer have increased their outputs.

Dark Bread Bogey Delayed Two Months Portland, March 1 (U.R) Portland tables will not be graced by the so-called "dark" bread for at least two months, Fred Kappel. president of the Oregon baking engineers, announced today. A meeting of the state organization will be held here March 28 to discuss the new flour. Bakers, he pointed out, will be given 30 days to use up the present stocks of flour. confirmed that they were accurate.

It was learned meanwhile that Pauley conferred at the capitol today with Chairman Robert E. Hannegan of the democratic national committee and Sam O'Neal, democratic publicity chief. They presumably wero discussing the future of the mud-slinging battle over Pauley's nomination, which has become increasingly embarrassing to the democrats. Paulpy, however, told reporters that he expected to be confirmed. He had no intention of withdrawing, he said.

Pauley's meeting with Hannegan came after the committee brawled through another session of heated testimony. Losses ran to 2 or more points at the worst although extreme casualties were reduced here and there in the final hour and a number of favorites registered modest advances near the close. Transfers dwindled to around 900,000 shares. After much research, a block model of the huge "floating icecube" was constructed during the winter of 1943 at Patricia Lake, Jaspar, in Canada. The model was 60 feet long, 30 feet wide and 20 feet deep, displacing 1,001) tons. The model was kept in frozen condition from that time until near the end of the following summer. It was composed of a substitute for ordinary ice, called "Pykrete," a mixture of wood pulp and ice.

This substance was a tough, somewhat plastic solid, which could be cut and worked like wood. It was estimated that an ordinary torpedo exploding under water against a pykrete surface would have made a crater only three feet deep. Grain Futures Rule Steady Chicago, March 1 (U.R) Domestic grain futures, pivoting on the strength in cotton and a further rise in Winnipeg rye, ruled steady to firm in quiet dealings today. Chicago wheat, corn and barley closed unchanged at ceiling prices bid. Oats closed unchanged to Vi cent higher and rye unchanged to l7a cents higher.

The Canadian May and July rye deliveries rose as much as five cents a bushel, making a cumulative gain of 15 cents a bushel from the recent low, then eased partially under realizing. Reports of additional sales of Canadian rye to Norway, and a firm domestic cash situation, shaped the general trend in the brown cereal. Wheat trading was inconsequential, consisting of transferring and light liquidation in May. Oats averaged steady with outside markets and news that Great Britain today purchased around 15,000 tons of Canadian oats, in addition to 5000 tons sold to Belgium. Wheat traders heard intimations that further changes in the government regulations might lower the inventory supply period from 45 to 30 days in order to swell the supply for the export program.
