2971 By TOM TUCKER With Atlanta International Raceway announcement that the initial phase of the court administered reorganiza tion plan had begun it appears that there is now light at the end of the fiscal tunnel The financially troubled track has been mired in the muck of bankruptcy for four years riday AIR officials announced that a sum of $165200 was being distributed in tax and wage checks according to the dic tates of the court appointed trustee Stacey Cotton The plan of reorganization which was approved and confirmed by the Su preme Court calls for the satisfaction of creditor claims Under bankruptcy laws the debts are deferred while the court determines if the firm can be reorganized as a solvent business which the courts have decided appears to be the case with AIR The original application of the law called "Chapter was in the reorganiza tion of Charlotte Motor Speedway in the early 1960s The move there is considered successful The largest payment from ini tial reorganization was a check for $10319257 to the Henry County tax depart ment Back wage checks were also mailed out What the act means in lay terms is that the 15 mile speedway has made a posi tive action to begin paying back its debts It also means that the trio of men who have been overseeing the operation of the track move a step closer to becoming the control ling body The men Walter Nix James Baker and LG DeWitt have tried to keep the facility running on a shoestring budget Now that the Chapter 10 proceedings have begun some much needed improve ments can be made by the group without fear that the track might be taken over by some other faction Baker and Nix are Atlanta businessmen and DeWitt is a businessman from Ellerbe NC The track which had its first race in 1960 was taken over by the now defunct American Raceways Inc operated by De troit financial wheeler dealer Larry Lo Patin But the American Raceways tracks started losing money and in the end all of them suffered
