Mad Boats His Job For IS years he worked as a logger but said, "I spent all my spare time around the boats, so I figured I might as well make them my Job." He went to work for the owner of a large vessel, the only other cargo boat now plying the middle Snake at all.

Four years ago he bought a 32-foot tug and was on his own. He replaced the tug with the stubby Queen two years ago and next year hopes to replace her with a sleeker1 and faster aluminum boat. For a man who declares that anyone who continues to fight the Snake river year after year must be a little crazy, Rivers is making remarkably long range plans for his charter boat business. And with a grin he'll admit, "I guess I just couldn't get away from the river if I wanted to."
