MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1962 Home Study Said To Bring Results In Advancements New York (UPD) This may surprise none at a time when stock market writhings have made ordinary citizens acutely sensitive to money matters, but an organization devoted to home study in such things has reported most workers who study finance and counting do well by themselves. Not necessarily in the stock market. The survey didn't cover this, and it might be hard to keep up with profits and losses there. Instead, it devoted itself to the way that home students made out in saleries and promotions. Oldest School The survey was made by International Accountants Society, which says it is, the oldest and largest.

homestudy school in field of accounting and allied management. It covered 5,343 persons who had received diplomas from the IAS in the past 10 years and found that 3,840 of them got pay raises and 2,728, or more than half, got promotions about the time completed their studies. Annual canvasses were made in 10-year period, 1952 through 1961, of those who finished the complete course. IAS said 87.7 per cent returned questionnaires with information on promotions and salary increases. The canvasses did not include persons who subscribed to shorter courses to concentrate on specific subjects.

Expanding Curriculum The IAS has headquarters in Chicago and is expanding its curriculum to provide instruction in business subjects not necessarily connected directly with accounting problems. "Today's narrowed profit margins and complex tax laws, among other considerations." said IAS president Byron Mendies in a statement released here, "make it essential that anyone aspiring 10 his company's executive level to be thoroughly trained in financial and management techniques." In other words, if you work for someone, you'll be more valuable and stand a better chance of promotion if you know how money is handled and affairs are run. KENNEDY GAVE IN Washington (UPD) President Kennedy gave in to House farm leaders and said in advance exactly how he would use authority he requested to allot among Latin American countries an additional 150,000 tons of premium-priced sugar. Kennedy committed himself to allot 130,000 tons a year of the U.S. quota to the Dominican Republic and 20,000 tons to Argentina.

Emphasis on Learning To Read Needed for Student To Advance UPI Education Specialist The teaching of reading has many implications for school and home. Some parents are confused by the many theories, criticisms, and comparisons of the subject. Obviously, reading is the most important academic area since it is basic to all knowledge. Based upon this fact, schools concentrate on reading during the primary grades. An emphasis on learning to read is needed before a student can make extensive advances in most other areas.

Comparisons with Russian or European methods actually have few implication for us in that our language is quite different. An analysis of Eng. lish will show a need for mastery of a variety of skills. A pure phonics approach is as inadequate as a total sight approach. We must be prepared teach reading by many en methods.

In addition to the irregularity of our language, we have the irregularity of learning. Readiness is constantly referred to when reading is discussed. A child's readiness to read depends upon his physical development, eyes, ears; motivation, experiences, and emotional adjustment. Naturally, the combination these items cannot be expected to develop at the same speed in each individual. The broad covered by the actual learning of reading means that much more than mechanical teaching is necessary.

Of course, there are many intricacies of teaching for which much training and experience is needed. Court Records BY DAVID NYDICK This does not mean that tion. As he has more exciting ing.
