1 I ARCHIE'S SHOW A 26 16 SUCCESS SUNDAY OCTOBER 25 1970 Cl) 0'tUnta Journal and CONSTITUTION 7 1 111 al W' Ole Miss Whips Vanderbilt By JOE LITSCH Atlanta Journal Constitution Staff Writer NASHVILLE Tenn or the first time this year all 34000 of the scats in Vanderbilt's Dudley ield had been sold The bars had ordered extra supplies of bourbon and it was flowing freely Ole Miss was in town Ole Miss with its much dis cussed much praised much publicized Heisman Trophy can didate Archie Manning and sit ting on top of the Southeastern Conference thanks to 17 9 whipping of Auburn And the ab sence of head coach Johnny Vaught in an Oxford hospital re covering from a heart attack only added incentive And when the Archie Show was over he had added yet an other win and a few personal records with a 26 16 defeat of Vanderbilt THIS TIME Manning did it in a conservative down to earth way He passed only when abso lutely necessary ran a few times but mainly stayed pretty much in the background of the win Part of trouble was that same old groin injury that has plagued him since the sec ond game of the season against Kentucky couldn't do what I wanted to because of the groin injury and the west Manning said the rain made it IN THE IRST half Manning and his senior teammates had to settle to play second fiddle to a couple of juniors Randy Reed and Bob Knight who took care of the running game and it was Reed who put Ole Miss on the scoreboard with a six yard run Linebacker Hom had set up score recoveringa Vandy fumble on the Commo dore 20 It took Manning three plays handing off to Knight then Reed twice to break the 0 0 tie By that time almost three minutes of the first quarter had elapsed and the two teams had swapped the football six times Seems that the Vanderbilt Tar tan Turf climate all the hazards and problems of a downpour so drenching that halflime ceremonies were can celled for fear of It wasn't the turf it was the rain Ole Miss picked up two Vandy fumbles and picked off one pass while Vandy had got ten one of passes Before the half was over Manning had thrown five more times three to his own team mates and two to Vandy defend ers but he did manage to get in on some of the scoring Starting from his own 33 Manning sent Knight and Reed through the Vandy line with only a 12 yard pass to loyd ranks as passing yardage Then the Heisman candidate ran the final nine yards himself for the sec ond Rebel touchdown Actually he had planned on passing but his receivers were covered and he started running as a last re YARDSTICK ir( downs Rushing yardage Pacing yardage Return ardase I Ullin umbles lost Yards penalized Mbs 19 176 102 23 9 183 3 37 1 29 sort and crossed the goal line at the corner THE SCORE increased Man ning's career total at 154 break ing the standing Ole Miss record of 151 set by Page Cochran back in 1954 56 On the next series Vandy sophmore Steve Burger showed that he apparently had learned something from watching Man ning He took four plays to score and turned what could have been a big loss into a 50 yard scoring play to end Karl Weiss And the youngster had picked up 22 yards himself again taking advantage of a scattered Ole Miss defense con Climbs Atop the SEC centrated on stopping Vandy passing The rain had subsided and the two teams began to become a little more liberal with offensive game plan and neither could generate any more points before the halftime horn The halftime rest seemed to do little to rejuvenate the Ole Miss offense though it did threaten twice and managed to add three points to its total Manning continued to stick to handing off directing a drive from the Rebel 37 He got his team as far as the Vandy 16 but failed on a third and three and had to settle for a Jim Poole field goal of 33 yards Vandy all this time was able to do nothing with the football mainly because Ole Miss de fense was probably reminded of last 30 14 loss to little Southern Mississippi The Ole Miss offense remem bered too but could do little more than a week ago Manning took the Rebels down within scoring range and again the Vandy defense forced a field goal settlement But this time kick was way off its mark IT'S SUPPOSED to be the final quarter that belongs to Ole Miss and they started off pretty much in control of things Burger fumbled the ball away to the Larry Torgerson in the most opportune spot possible the Vandy one Still it took three plays for Archie to finally find the correct hole for Knight to get through Things looked pretty safe with Ole Miss leading 24 7 so the first unit was called in for a rest with reserves standing in against the Commodores Andthis seemed a safe Rebel move until Denny Painter No 2 quar terback marchel his team in for a second touchdown Vandy was still 10 points be hind but wait more A Vandy onsides kick attempt failed but the Rebels helped the Vandy cause with a bad punt snap all the way to the end zone where Bill Young could do no more than prevent a Vandy touchdown with a safety BUT AGAIN the memory of Southern Miss came up and the Rebels realized that a touch down and a two point conversion could mar their SEC record and the Ole Miss defense turned things around and forced Painter into a safety Vandy stopped an Ole Miss drive at the three and took over but on the first play Painter dropped back into the end zone couldn't get away from Cole man but did get rid of the ball of bounds That satisfy an official who called Painter for inten tional grounding the ball and awarded the Rebels a safety Mississippi 7 7 3 Vanderbilt 0 7 0 Reed 6 run
