order aking expertly Black drew in the SC defense and fired a 53 yard bullet to flanker Ronnie Jackson with a fat 11:58 left in the first quarter The Tar Heels increased the margin to 10 0 minutes later when David Braine kicked a 21 yard field goal The second quarter was a treat for those who like three yards and a cloud of dust foot ball for the Tar Heels took 21 plays two 15 yard penalties and 78 yards to make their touch down Willard hammered out most of the yardage and Black fought it in from two yards for the score Braine converted and Carolina led by a comfortable 17 0 at halftime UNC took the second half kickoff and smartly moved 73 yards in 12 plays Black going the last five on a singular burst of energy Braine did his duty for a 24 0 advantage Wearing a Baker Suit of Coronet Worsted complements gracious living time He left Morgantown sev eral hours before the kickoff after learning of his youngest brother's death in Denver Colo The Nittany Lions playing under Associate Coach Joe Pa ferno got two touchdowns each from halfback Bob Riggle and fullback Tom Urbanik in spoil ing West Virginia's homecom ing which attracted more than 26000 Riggle scored his first touch down midway through the sec ond quarter on an 86 yard run from his 14 The run was the longest in Penn State football history Penn State drove to the WVU four the first time it got the ball only to fumble Another fumble this time by WVU the 1 Reeves made a dent in the Carolina defense in the second DICKINSON (RIGHT) DIVES IN VAIN EORT North Carolina's John Atherton Defends Against Gamecock Aerial But before this happened the offensive unit led by Ridlehuber and Co took charge Ridlehuber on a keeper to the right made a beautiful seven yard run for a touch down Gene Etter added the extra point and the score was tied THERE WAS not a forward pass thrown on this 48 yard drive Hughes was QB at the start of the drive but Ridle huber came in and used Armbrester outside the tackles and Bob Taylor on quick handoffs inside the tackles plus run ning a few counter plays when the now not so ferocious Wildcats were pursuihg the first offensive flow too intently Ridlehuber sandwiched his own off tackle keepers in between Taylor and Armbrester's thrusts This TD march took the heart out of the Kentucky team They were never the same THE BULLDOGS did not give them much opportunity to show their offensive muscles after the first 15 minutes But when they did get the football the Georgia defense had been adjusted Norton the passer was rushed and the re ceivers were covered Bird is a fine halfback but he wasn't given much opportunity to bolster his all star credentials after the first quarter The Kentuckians started most of their offensive moves from the I formation which moved into a pro set Some plays were run from the I with a wingback Then they had a flanker and a man In motion which befuddled the Bulldogs for that first quarter Norton was not rushed and end found open spots in the Bulldog secondary Norton looked like a great passer in the early stages He is a good quarterback but passing becomes more difficult when you are trying to pass from a prone position GEORGIA JUST about won the game in the second quarter when after tying the Wildcats they souped up their offense with a couple of forward passes Hughes hit Arm brester for 13 yards and then Ridlehuber came in from the bullpen and pitched a strike to George Nowicki for 20 yards The Wildcats were upset by the Bulldog aerial attacks While they were running for the bomb shelters Ridlehuber on a keeper to the right made a beautiful 12 yard for the go ahead touchdown Etter made it 14 7 and the Wildcats were never again ferocious In fact I think Georgia finished them for the season They had their two big moments against Ole Miss and Auburn since then it has been downhill ON THE OTHER side of the ledger Georgia has been coming along slowly but surely since their initial setback in Tuscaloosa in early September Lacking offensive and de fensive speed and other talents needed for gridiron greatness the Bulldogs have substituted a winning spirit and Bulldog determination The Bulldogs have exceeded the expectations of fans and experts How far can they go? I know how many more games they will win but when defeat does come it will be administered by a team with more speed and talent than this 1964 Georgia team has MEH RE ANALYSIS A mV 4 AT THIS POINT the vigorous North Carolina defense took leave for awhile and the Game cocks proceeded to make a lot of yardage but only a few points for the next 20 or so minutes South Carolina finally ac quainted itself with the score board late in the third period when Reeves unloaded a 52 yard peg to Marietta's Doug Senter who made a good reception and carried it across The fourth quarter was' a maze of passes as Reeves vainly attempted to narrow the score South Car 0 0 6 North Car 10 7 7 0 24 UNC Jackson 53 pass from Black (Chapman kick) UNC Braine 21 UNC Black 2 run (Braine kick) UNC Black 4 run (Braine kick) USC Senter 52 pass from Reeves (pass failed) attendance 36000 YARDSTICK yards The second was much simpler with halfback Gary Rowe going 42 yards on a re verse Rowe also scored the third Wolfpack six pointer on a four yard pass from Ron Skosnik Harold Deters kicked a 27 yard field goal for State before Rowe's second score The Cavaliers who had upset Army last week by capitalizing on the mistakes got no breaks against the alert Wolf pack They had little offense until it meant nothing late in the game when Virginia's alternate quarterbak Tom Hodges got the second touch down with less than four min utes left State 2 '1 '3 Viremia 0 0 7 NCS Mansfield 6 run (Andrews kick) NCS Rowe 42 run (Andrews kick) 1 VA navis 88 run (Shuman kick) NCS Deters 27 NCS Rowe 4 pass from Skosnik (An drews kick) 1 VA Hodens 18 run (R Davis run) Attendance 20100 Harrr Mehre CHARLOTTESVILLE Va North Carolina State rocked Virginia with two quick touchdowns midway the second period Saturday and whipped the Cavaliers 34 15 in an Atlantic Coast Conference football game And when Virginia rallied with an 88 yard scoring burst by quarterback Bob Davis a min ute deep in the second half the Wolfpack staged two more drives for a field goal and a third touchdown to wrap it up Quarterback Charlie Noggle directed State now 4 1 in ACC play and 4 2 over all 80 yards in 12 plays for its first touch down with halfback Shelby Mansfield going the last six A half but still only six points i was pushed across This in all faimes again to the zealous Tar Heel defenders was set up by two straight penalties Only when the game was out of reach did Reeves begin to embark on any yardage mis sions Actually the longest swipe of the day was an 87 yard punt return by Gamecock Bobby Brvant but this was erased by a penalty at the line of scrim mage The South Carolina offense was a plodding machine in the first half and only when Reeves sought refuge in the air did the Gamecocks move However on numerous occasions the Tar Heels led by center Chris Han burger would break through and pin the Georgia native for substantial losses While Reeves was suffering under the handicap of the big rush the worrisome Black was runnning in and out of traps The 187 pounder scored two touchdowns both determined runs inside the 10 and flung a 54 yard pass for the opening TD THINKING LEASING?
