Tie Story of tfee Indian Aepnlm at the Upper Cascades. i Htatoflo Block Howe--Tho Bxtftemwt lit Ho row in tha Gen FhU Sheridan hopeless Ulnest, taken in connection with a recent visit to the Upper Cas Odes, recalls vividly an Important episode in the early military history of tturtdashln gand brilliant cavalry officer Thirty two years ago on the 26th day of last March, the historic attack waa made on the residents of the Upper Cascades by the hostile Indians. To all old pioneers of Oregon ad to the careful reader of the record of the early Indian wars of the territory the circumstances Of the attack on the Cascades and of tho masaere are well known These sanguinary deeds of savage veogeaure have become Imperishable fragments of the his tory of Oregon and will never be referred to without a shudder and feelings of horror How when and whero the attacks were made have been repeated!) written about and are more than a thrice told tale Capt, Bright, who was at The Dalles when the attack was first made, lost no time In hastening to the rescue Lieut Phil Bheridan who at that time was stationed at an conver also received the news and hastened to the sccuo with forty men He co-operated j.Ith Col Wright and rendered assibtauce in driving back the Indiana and in capturing a nnm bet of the red devils According to the reconli nine Indians were hanged, among the number old Cheuoweth one of the chiefs, who It sai 1 win at the botto of tho The folk nifs mention is made of the flght in tlie HStorj of the Willamette alle who esaj ed from the first attack fltprt eddown the river toWnrd down they met the steamer Belle ou board I ieut Phil Sheridan and fort mt.ii who were sent up on the report of un cxi earrled down by Indian Simpson the morning Tho retreating party went on board the steamer Btllt, aud volunteered to sene under Lieut Shenda i who landed at Georges place but found thing In ashes The steamer returned to iincou ver and the Indians pitched iutoSheridan fought him all day and drove him. with forty mtn und ten below Hamilton place notwith standing he bad a small cannon One soldier was killed Tho steamer Bello returned the next day (the third of tbe attack), and brought ammunition for the bloclthonse The steamer Fashion, with vol unteers from Portland also arrived at the same time The volunteers remained at the Lower Cascades.

Lletit, Sheridan took his command with a bateau loaded with ammunition crossed to Brad ford a Island, on the Oregon side, where they found most of the Cascade Indians, having been advised by George Johnson to go on there tha first day of the attack. They were crossing and recrosaing all the time, and Sheridan made them prisoners. He pressed a boat crew, and as tGey towed up to the head of the island and above saw great numbers of Indiana on the Washington territory side opposite them. Sheridan expected them to cross and fight him and so between them tnd the Indians he had la charge he thought he tiad his hands full Just then. Lieut.

Sheridan discovered Col Steptoe and his dragoons, Infantry and volunteers coming down from the steamer Mary, -forprislnr completely the Indians who were busily engaged In cooking beef, and watching Lieut Sheridan Across the river But on the sonad of the bugle, the Indians fled like deer into the woods, with the low of only one killed Had it not been for the bugle, they might have captured fifty redskins The conduct of CoL Wright In this affair was highly praised by the press and public Although in camp on Mi way to Walla Walla, when the courier brought him news of the attack just be- foro midnight, ho at once roused his men and inarched the whole command Infantry, artillery and dragoons back to The Dalles, loaded an of them he could possibly crowd upon the the steamers and barge, and hurried to the rescue. They were delayed by the condition of the boilers but when they finally reached tho scene of action Col Wright and CoL Bteptoe led the troops in person In a charge before which the enemy fled like sheep No less gallant was the conduct of Lieut. Phil Sheridan The news reached Vancouver late In the evening of the attack, and at 5 clock next morning he started up the river with all the force he could col lect Intelligence of attack reached Portland late on the night of March 26,1856 and created great ox citemenL A public meeting waa immediately called, and a company of volunteers organized the following day They were refused tho use of territorial arms by those who had them in chsTge and having picked np twenty pieces of various descriptions, started early on the morning of the 2bth in the steamer Fashion This company was forty strong and commanded by Capt L. Powell and Ueut A Stewart. Procuring arms and ammunition at Vancouver, after much delay, they arrived at the Lower Cascades, too late to be of any assistance to Lieut Sheridan and but a short time before the Indians were scattered by CoL Wright, Later a company of slxtj-elght men, commanded by CoL Stephen Coffin ana Licuts JU McLaren and Bretk went up on tho steamer Jennie Clapk, but finding everything quiet, returned to Portland A second public meeting was held In Portland on March 28 In times of excitement cays our authoritv there are always to be found plentj of men.

The front is lined with wharves built on piles, to which ocean steamers come with ease at all seasons On the east side of the river are the towns of Portland and Bell wood, and they are all practically one city and contain au estimated population of 60.000 Therhcr here is deep and broad and the wharves on both sides the river have always some ocean going vessels load Ing or discharging cargoes at them I had bet accustomed to hear that Portland dav as an ocean port -was passing aw a fhe people here laugh at the idea. They smite when you mention Seattle and T.acomaL. The admit the bar IB an obstruction but claim that at its worst it does not the largest vessels coming over It. Thus it will be aeen that tho commercial pros pority of Portland Is an assured fact unlikely to be affected by any subsequent growth of cither of the Sound citioo, Wb.cn asked what they count 6n to re tarn its prosperity in spite of all draw Portlanders aay Our climate aud the trade already established here They bank largely on their climate I am free to confess 1 found it uncomfortably warm the first two or three days I was here But at evening a delicious coolness supervenes, and I am told that at no time in sum mer is this relief absent.
