'W' Pacific Transcript VOL IV OLD SERIES VOL XVI WATERWORKS AND MUTUAL INSURANCE do expec mani tho raluation her of of the if ho cannot organize a nor tor tun summer months ting much encouragement On the depression in the hill above is the quar ry that with little work an be made a com bined water tower and settling pond union oruie nrosecuuon heard the case and found Moon guilty A plentiful supply ofdelieious cake ano fruit from the bridal banquet ta bles enabled the Transiikii'T to dream nil manner of good things about Mr and Mrs Gross THE CHURCHES day will bo celebrated with an entertainment by the Allen ton church next Sunday The Ladies Industrial society of the church will serve cream and cake Juno 17th in the evening Mis Janies entertained the Ladies Industrial society of tho Methodist church at tea at the meeting last week Rev George Jarnos of St Louis father of tho pastor of the church visited his son Sunday nnd preached an excellent sermon Sun day night for Pacific has led the New Haven Notes to suppose we already have waterworks and last weok that paper speaks as follows and Pacific have electric lights and water worksand Now Hav en nothing but a good supply of But New Haven herself is awake and agitating for waterworks and from the attitude of the papers it is pretty clear they will come before very long Tho Notes however is not alone in observing Pacific attitude toward the question Last Washington Journal says it seems is in competition with Union in seeing which will gel waterworks first Both should be commended for their zeal They could do nothing better for their towns and tho one first will not bo long ahead Pacific will hardly let these tations go long unfulfilled especially when they will do so much for her when realized and when she is the best situated town for cheap and ef fective water works in eastern Mis souri A movement is being made to se curowaterworks in nearly all tho little cities around Pacific The people of Union will certainly secure them having voted by a big majority to bond themselves to tho amount of nearly $10 each in order to obtain them A company has been organ ized at Meramec Highlands in St Louis county for the purpose of es tablishing waterworks at Sunset Hill securing a plentiful supply of water from the Meramec river It is pro posed to furnish water to lyirkwood Webster Groves Old Orchard Clayton and other towns in the county Marcus Bcrnhcimer is president of the company and is noted for his pro gressive ideas in anything he 'under takes Water works have been talked of considerably in Pacific The Tran script has advocated them Its Reputation for getting what it wishes A ALSE RUMOR I Last DispatcA contain ed a sensational telegram from Laba dio to the offset that Henry Worth ington who lives in tho Missouri bot tom three miles from that village had awakened one night to discover two burglars in the house lieaching un der his pillow fie secured his revolver and opened fire Several shots were exchanged When the smoke of battle cleared away Mr Worthing ton was found suffering from a flesh wound and one butglar was dead in the room Coroner Meunch tele graphed constable reymcyer Satur day to go to Labadie and summon a jury Mr reymyer met Dr Meunch there and an investigation followed when it was discovered the story was made ont of whole cloth There had not even been a burglary Tho only thing that could possibly have given risp to the rumor is the fact that a cojogeil man who works on the farm returning home late had fired his gun It is not known who sent tho report to the Post Dispatch A DEADLY LOA BREAD A Mr Miller a saddler of Summit lust week got drunk and whipped his wife She entered com plaint and tho case came to trial before esquire Close riday evening The evidence developed that Miller had knocked Mrs Miller down with a loaf of brand of her linking He was fined $25 and costs and in de fault was taken to tho jail at Union SUMMER SCHOOLS nnio Snow will teach ichool at Mrs residence wherewith to fight fire and this in itself is liable some day to prove a very desirable thing Second having the moans for com batting the flames insurance rates would be materially decreased Third It is hard to get soft water here or even good well water on ac count of the sandy soil and the drain from the high hiljs bringing in sur face water Waterworks would take the place of cisterns for washing pur poses and watering stock if no more and would be cheap in comparison with the handiness of the ourth It is so nice to have water in every room that at least three fam ilies in town have private mains and water pumped to them by tho Mis souri Pacific pump engine It is a great thing Pacific can hardly afford to longer without waterwork DECORATION DAY Yesterday memoiial day was cele brated by the rederick Hacker post No 290 A Members of the army gathered at hall in the afternoon being met by numerous citizens and with flags and music marched to the cemetery where flic graves of their old comrades were remembered with flowers A requium mass was said by Rev Glingler at tho Catholic church at eight memorial day Union observed the day with speak ing music bunting nnd all The Berger observance was post poned till June 3d Tho sons of veterans at Stanton had an elaborate celebration St Clair and Morrellton both cele brated the Union cornet band fur nisbpg music at both places Weirich post celebrated at Spring Bluff and Gamble Post at Lone Dell At Washington salute of forty four guns was fired in the morning Kiskaddon delivered theoration A big time was had Mrs pri vate insteadlof the school house as an nnccil llnst week Prof Thomas Cochrane is canvass ing to Si mal schl and ia mi There are two plans proposed One is an artesian well which seems feas iable and would require no engine The other is to lay a main directly south along Adelaide aveuno to the river a distance of perhaps a milo to have cross mains where needed to finish tho quarry on top of the Close hill with a wall and cement as a combined settling pond and stand pipe and to have the electric light engine do the pumping which it could easily do in a half a time This latter plan meets the most gen eral favor because it embodies no risk such as there would be in securi ng an artesian well and besides tho great body of water there would be in the settling pond combined with its heiglith would give sufficient force ami pressure to combat fire in the highest building in town Now consider whut Pacific has al ready the engine and building a rock settling pond of immense pro portion high enough to servo as a standpipe walled by Nature on three sides and on tho bottom abundance of good water within a mile of town There is not another town so favorably situated for good waterworkrs cheap in the entire State of Missouri What would be the benefit waterworks? irst they would present a means NOT GUILTY Considerable interest was fested in tho trial ot'James Moore of Labadie for assault on Ed Hollis which took place in esquiro court Monday night It appears Hol lis used insulting language relative to wife and he struck him over the head with a shovel James Booth appeared for defendant and Judge Bolte prosecuting attorney of Union for the prosecution A jury heard the case and found Moon not PACIIC MO MAY 31 1895 DID YOU EVER try Electric Bitters as a remedy SOCIAL CHAT Thursday evening of last week Miss Blanch Close entertained nt tea the lady teachers of the public school and a number of mutual friends be sides Peck jr gave a recherche evening parly at the residence of his father Capt It Peck Saturday evening A large number were out and the refreshments and nil pertain ing t0 the entertainment were ele gant A lawn social was given at the resi dence of Mrs A II Wjlson riday night of last week and cream and strawberries were served for the bene fit of the Baptist church The lawn large and beautiful on that oc casion was a mass of roses making it extremely attractive for such purpos es The attend nice was large nnd the enjoyment complete A goodly sum was realized for the church CO OPERATIVE INSURANCE Probably the prime reason for this general movement for waterworks is the high insurance rates The Union Tribune Republic says Why is It thus We here complaints from so many places of Increased insurance rates The Pacific Transcript says: "Higher rates are charged hero than in nearly any town around" Increased rates are explained by the fact that her streets are a few inches or a fraction of an inch below the regulation width Union is threatened with a raise on her already high rates why we do" not understand Why not follow Mr John com plete the waterworks put in a good supply of hydrants and then organize a mutual protective lire insurance company and lot all others go to theboar7 In Washington which already has waterworks this very thing is now under way Two mass meeting have already been held for the purpose of organization and another will prob able be held soon The farmers of St township have already effected a preliminary organization A committee has been appointed to draft a constitution and by laws and another meeting will be held Saturday June lt for tho pur pose of perfecting tho organization Pacific and New Haven should join in tho movement The Transcript however is rather in favor of one gen eral organization than of several smaller ones and fur these reasons 1st Each insurance company must make a deposit with the State One deposit would be cheaper than three or four 2d A company insuring in Pacif ic exclusively say might meet with such a loss it could not pay out But if Washington Pacific Union and New Haven and perhaps other towns were included all losses would bo distributed a fire even like the one at Now Haven would not be costlier than bld line insurance mid suchfires do not occur every year The movement seems to be general fur waterworks let it also be made general for cheap insurance that will keep money at home THE DISCOVERY SAVED HIS LIE Mr Caillouette Druggist Bea vcrsville Ill says Dr New Discovery I owe my life Was taken with La Grippe nnd tried all the physicians for miles about but of no avail mid was given up and told I could not live Having Dr King's New Discovery in my storo 1 sent for a bottle and began its use mid from the first
