I'm pretty big strong man and tired as I can be Cotton is little man He just got tired the reason he Inst th rarr This was before the recount that Owens and Jack Smith and red Lorenzen and Bobby Johns all had demanded a little chore not completed until well into the evening As late as 10 pm chief scorer Joe Epton was still under attack by the disgruntled also rans Roberts though already had his check for $9700 by this time the share of the purse and he began to speak with warm devotion for this new one and one half mile carpet of asphalt still warm from its Sunday afternoon of sport more of a track than I thought it would he said like a track if you win on it but have liked this one if have finished The first production effort of Atlanta International Raceway came off without great mishap or distressing confusion The esti mate of 25000 spectators was entirely honest There was a dis appointing grandstand crowd but this probably reflected an aver sion to the $15 $1250 and $10 tariff Prices of $10 $750 and $5 prob ably would have been more realistic for 300 miles Some relief must be given the customer trying to get away from the track The exits were jammed and more than an hour after the race the South Expressway labored under a heavy traffic burden until 7 pm two hours and 15 minutes after the race was done But these are matters that will be worked out as the track officials roll up their sleeves and resume the chore of applying the final touches to the construction job Meantime al were so de lighted with their labor that before the race was half over Presi dent Art Lester had already announced a new one 500 miles on the 30th day of October All hands were cordially invited to return Thirty two of the 200 times around Atlanta Inter national Raceway receiving a severe indoctrination into this universe of speed remained to be run in theinaugural Dixie 300 Mile Sweepstakes Sunday after noon Everett (Cotton) Owens a wizened little 36 year old fellow from Spartanburg SC was half a lap ahead of Glenn (ireball) Roberts young powerful i and athletic of Daytona Beach la This was the picture clear as could be it seemed Roberts had 32 laps to gain three quarters of a mile on Owens Both were driving Pontiac cars their engines encouraged by the accoutre ments of racing and both were being broiled by the same sun Lap by lap as they whirled by the grandstand section Roberts picked up yardage on Owens Henry McLemore the distinguished Georgia journalist who has the same affinity for these inanimate machines that Ernest Hemingway has for animate bulls figured Rob erts was gnawing away at his in tended victim at a second a lap On the 188th lap as they went into the north turn Roberts ran down Owens and took the lead and it was his the rest of the way At 180 laps he had been nine seconds behind At 188 laps he was the leader and the financial betterment realized in this determined charge to the front would come to $4850 the difference between first and second place prizes Immediately after the race was over Owens was found on the stand claiming victory and requesting a recount He wore a pained expression on his face already tired and worn from the rigors of the afternoon and he explained the basis of his claim Case of the Green and Yellow lags went into the pits three times under the green Owens said which meant that the field was running at top speed went in twice when the yellow flag was out 1 had to be lead ing at the end" Roberts was in no condition to defend himself at the mo ment He had gone to the field hospital for some oxygen and to recover from a case of seasickness that had suddenly over come him Later however fully refreshed and restored to good humor the former mechanical engineering student at University of lorida said this is the way it was: went in for my last stop on a green flag I was leading Cotton by a lap He passed me twice while I was in ths nit: Ths first time it made us even The second time put him a lap ahead Cotton went in on the yellow flag Then that third time talking about is the time I never stopped I thought my right front tire was low on air and I pulled in I waggled my wheels a couple of times and they felt all right was in the pit area and I still planned to stop but the luckiest break I ever got in racing I was going too fast to stop so I just headed on back to the track I never did slow down below 45 (miles per This was on lap No 141 A moment later Richard Petty who had just moved into second place blew a tire and went into a spin and lost his position The man who claimed it was Roberts and the rest of the race was a matter of Roberts and Owens With what appeared to be a rather comfortable lead Owens backed off to what he apparently figured was a safe speed His tires were in good shape and he had fuel to last But Roberts now was tearing around the track like a Saturday night expressway showoff Turn to Page 19 How they finished and what they won: ireball
