The April edition of the magazine has a story of the Lions Eye Institute at the Hazleton State General Hospital written by Miss Antonelli, of the newspaper's early edition. It is entitled "Eye Institute Fulfills Dream." The story tells how the vision of the late William R.

Stein, Weatherly, was translated into the modern eye tare wing built in the new State General Hospital by 12 regional Lions clubs. "The Lion," which is printed in 15 languages, has a circulation of more than 1,180,000 and is published in 149 countries. The Lions clubs affiliated with HALO which built and equipped the wing are Hazleton, Weatherly, White Haven, West Hazleton, Freeland, Drums, McAdoo, Sheppton-Oneida, Ringtown, Nuremberg, Conyngham and Patrick Wilson, Dave Fegely, John Reichelt, John Conti and Joe Boyle, faculty advisor. A guard was hired for the county prison, bids awarded for Memorial Day supplies and the first step taken toward the establishment of a county office of Social Service Transportation at yesterday's meeting of the Schuylkill County Commissioners. Leo Thornton, Mahanoy City, was hired as a correctional officer at the prison to fill one of the four vacancies created due to recent resignations at the jail. According to Acting Warden Francis Garenty, who made the recommendation, Thornton has worked as a sergeant of the guard and a security guard for defective agencies.

He will receive an annual salary of $6,300. The Emblem Flag Company, Premose, was awarded the order for plastic grave markers to be used by county veterans posts at a price of $1,040 and the Col-legeville Flag Company was the successful bidder of 135 gross of flags at $51.10 per gross. County Solicitor W. Alan Williams was directed to prepare and advertise an ordinance establishing a county office of Social Service Transportation. Minority Commissioner Albert Matunis, who made the motion, noted that the purpose of the office, will be to coordinate the transportation services of the social service agencies.

And in another report, Jefferson said some of the bids for provisions and supplies for Rest Haven awarded recently were not at the lowest bid price but were selected because they were of better quality. Jefferson added that the decision to buy the better product at a higher price was made after consultation with the Rest Haven dietician. The commissioners approved a contract for transportation between Towne Cab Company, Pottsville, and the-Adult Daycare program sponsored by the United Cerebal contract will provide transportation services for 11 clients involved in the Adult Daycare program. Bill Krash, teacher-coordinator Soutn Schuylkill Area Vo-Tech School, and students, Karen Boyer and Sandy Strausser, Pine Grove, and Evelyn Smololock, Shenandoah, presented the commissioners with a certificate of appreciation for the use of the County Technical Assistance and Mapping Office to work in a statewide creative marketing project. The title of the project was "A Study to Determine the Poplua-tion and Income Factors, Pro and Con, in Schuylkill County that may Influence Retailers from Locating, Relocating or Expanding Their Facilities in the Area." The project won first place in State competition and will be placed in national competition in Anaheim, Cal.

Some 35 students enrolled in marketing, management and merchandising at the Vo-Tech School participated in the project. In salary board action, Joan Cugusi a homemaker in the Children's Services program was granted a merit increase. Her salary will be $6,963 annually. During a meeting of the retirement board also held yesterday, County Treasurer Harold Weist told the commissioners that the cash balance stands at $174,397.15. Weist requested and received permission from the commissioners to invest $100,000 in government securities at the highest interest rate possible.

U.S.

District Court Judge Charles Weiner on Wednesday denied the request. The police department had offered Rita Royster, 24, the opportunity for a medical leave of absence or an oppor-' tunity to resign as a police officer and be reinstated in the juvenile aid division where she had previously served. Mrs. Royster most recently worked as a street sector officer. Mrs.

Royster chose the medical leave without pay, but the Fraternal Order of "Police took her case to federal court. In denying the request, Weiner said the case "consists of no more or less than the dayby-day management of police affairs." Burglary, fugitive nabbed in California GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) A New Jersey man convicted last year in a multimillion-dollar burglary ring has' been arrested here at the home of a friend, the FBI says. Louis Kripplebauer, 43, of Cherry Hill, N.J., had been a fugitive since last October when he failed to surrender to a federal judge in Philadelphia to begin serving a 74-year prison term. He was convicted in August of transporting stolen goods across state lines and conspiracy.

A federal marshal's spokesman said in Santa Ana that Kripplebauer had denied his identity when he was arrested Wednesday. A hearing was scheduled April 8 in Los Angeles to determine his identity and rule on his extradition to Pennsylvania. He is being held without bail in the Orange County Jail, officials said. Cavanaugh are preceding on schedule. Cavanaugh, a former warden at Northampton County Prison, was retained by the county commissioners late last year to make recommendations for improvement at the jail. According to the Nahas-Michael report eight 1,500 watt mercury vapor lights were installed as part of a new lighting system above the balcony.

The Cavanaugh report said that the prison interior was "gloomy" and recommended the new lighting. Painting has been completed on 36 cells and the hospital room received two coats of paint. Other prison areas that got some "sprucing up" were deputies, counselors and guards rooms. Presently workers are painting the conference room. Ten cells and the deputies room have been plastered the report said.

On a recommendation by Controller Thomas Jefferson the commissioners approved an additional $7,142 in funds for the detoxification unit of the Mental Health-Mental Retardation program. Dr. John R. Prehatny Hazleton man arrested in W-B burglary A Hazleton man was arrested by Wilkes-Barre police last night at 9:15 as he was leaving the office of a physician in the First Valley Bank at Broad and Wyoming streets. George Prusak, 22, of 631 Monges was charged by Wilkes-Barre Detectives Tino Andriole and Edward Cunningham with burglary, unlawful taking and receiving stolen property.

The warrant for Prusak's arrest was issued in connection with an alleged burglary that took place March 18 at a private garage on Seneca Street in Wilkes-Barre. A motorcycle and cycle parts were stolen. Prusak was arraigned before District Magistrate James W. Scarcella and was committed to Luzerne County Prison in default of $7,500 bail. John R. Prehatny, a Hazleton native, has been appointed by the board of trustees of Methodist Hospital, Philadelphia, to serve as the hospital's chief of surgery and director of surgical services. In taking his new position this month, he succeeds two prominent Philadelphia surgeons, Dr. George Willauer and Dr. John DeTuerk.

Dr. Prehatny, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Prehatny, 532 Pardee is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a trustee of Phi Chi medical fraternity and serves on the executive committee of Methodist Hospital.

A graduate of Hazleton High School and of the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Prehatny had his medical and surgical training at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He is active in the teaching of medical students, interns and residents both at Methodist Hospital and Jefferson, where he is associate professor of clinical surgery. The surgeon is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Medical Club and Rotary Club of Philadelphia. He is a member of the council of administration of Holy Ghost Church, Philadelphia.

Dr. Prehatny is married to the former Helene Smith, Weston, and they and their five children reside at Wyn-newood. Charges dismissed for Drums resident A charge of theft by deception against Robert Davison, 23 Oakhurst Park, Drums R.D. 1, was dismissed Thursday. Davison was to have been given a preliminary hearing Thursday morning before valley district magistrate Burton Balliet, but no hearing was held when an agreement to dismiss the charge was reached among the parties.

The charge had been preferred by Butler Township police chief Andrew Pecile and related to a check in the amount of $275. Arty. Lewis Bott, this city, represented Davison.
