Farmers of State Report Upturn in Planting of Oats HARRISBURG, Sept. 28 (U.R) Pennsylvania farmers today reported a sharp upturn in the number of The decisive defeat of repeal in yesterday's special election was described by spokesmen for the United Dry Association as proof that Oklahoma citizens want- the state even drier than It now Is. Oklahomans rejected abolition of the "bone dry" laws by a vote of 310,888 to 262,825 with all but 177 of the state's 3,721 precincts counted.

It was the sixth time since state. hood in 1907 that sooners had junked a repeal amendment. The call of dry leaders for stricter enforcement of prohibition may incite early action by state legislators. State Senate President Pro Tern Bill Logan said the election outcome standi as a mandate to the lawmakers to make prohibition "more enforceable." The Roy Hollomon, executive secretary of the drys, said a previously announced plan to seek a ban on 3.2 beer if the repeal amendment failed would now go into effect as a matter of course. Symptoms of poison ivy usually appear 12 to 24 hours after exposure.

Charles J.

Petrasek, pastor of St. Mary Church, has officiated during all novena services, which began last Saturday. The novena is each year from September 24 to October 2 in honor of St. Therese, who was canonized May 17, 1925, 28 I years after her death. The shrine of St.

Therese was constructed in the convent garden in 1934 for the intention that, through prayer, a school would be established for "children of St. Mary Church. The shrine was dedicated October i 7, 1934, and the first novena was held the following year. St. Mary School was constructed in 1937.

Novenas at the shrine con- tinue for nine days, The rosary is recited each evening during the -s novena, beginning; at 7:15, and prayers begin at 7:30. A novena is 'I a nine-day period of prayer that pro-. ceeds a Catholic celebration. A high mass will be celebrated Monday morning in St. Mary Church, begin-' ning at 8:00.

Monday is the feast of St. Therese, the Little Flower of Co Jesus. The novena will end during services Sunday afternoon, beginning at 3:00. -Two sermons are presented during the services each evening by Father Petrasek. One sermon is in i English and the other in Slovak.

The novena is the only outdoor service of type conducted in this area. The novena has been con- tinned annually since the first serv- Ice In 1935. The late Rev. George Hrlc was pastor of St. Mary Church when the shrine was constructed in the convent, garden.

1 St. Therese, the Little Flower of Jesus, was born January 2, 1873, in Alencon, France. She died when she was 24 years old. St. Therese, who was one of nine children, became a nun in the Carmel of Lisieux.

St. Pay Homage to St. Driver Admits Guilt In Hit-Run Accident Noticing a replacement headlight and fresh paint on a fender and hood of an automobile owned by Paul Milton R. D. 1, Chief of Police Oliver Stoner, Milton, picked up the owner for questioning in with the hit-and-run incident on September 3, when a Milton man was run down and badly injured.

First denying he was the driver of the car responsible for injuries to Harry Smith, 32, run down on a Milton street, Frankquet finally admitted the offense. He said that after the hit-and-run incident he took his car to Bloomsburg to have a battered headlight and fender repaired. Taken before a Milton justice of the peace, Franquet furnished $500 bail for court. Smith, the accident victim, remains in Evangelical Hospital, Lew-isburg. He is under treatment for brain concussion, shoulder fracture and other injuries.

A state-federal agriculture survey indicated that sowing of winter oats is especially popular In south-central Pennsylvania counties. The State Agriculture Department said wheat seeding is nearly finished in northern parts of the commonwealth and is well started in southern sections. Early seedings of winter barley also have befr given a good start. The survey showed that apple growers are placing much of their production in storage houses. Picking of the large apple crop, estimated this year at nine million, 350 thousand bushels is in full swing.

Erie County farmers reported that grape harvesting in that area is progressing rapidly. Potato digging is well under way but yields are expected to be considerably below last year. Commercial vegetable growers welcomed occasionally heavy rainfall last week. The condition of all truck crops was reported improved, especially in the Schuylkill and Erie County areas. Prospects lor late spinach were reported excellent but tomatoes rip ened slowly and not many loads were being taken to canneries.

Virtually all of the bumper corn crop has matured with a few corn pickers still in operation. Much of the corn is being shocked and silos are practically full. Railfall was normal over the western section of the state last week and two-thirds normal in the eastern portion. Some northwest counties reported soils too et to work, but many sections remained dry. Slight frost damage was reported in southwest and northern sections.

H. Follmer, Milton, some time ago posted notices announcing applications would be received for a vacancy on a rural mail delivery route out of the office. When the deadline for filing applications fell yesterday, the postmaster reported 78 persons want the job. Date for an examination of the applicants will be announced in the near future. The position pays $2,470 a year for covering a route of approximately 30 miles, Kiwanians Hear Conclave Reports Reports from last week's Pennsylvania district convention of Kiwanis International in Pittsburgh were presented 4,0 Shamokin Kiwanis Club last evening.

Charles E. Jones, vice president, and John R. Steele, lieutenant governor-elect for District 9, each reported on activities during the annual convention program, which included election of Thomas Lewis Jones, of Brentwood, as Pennsylvania district governor for 1950. Steele solicited the support of local Kiwanians during his term of office as lieutenant governor of District 9, which includes' 11 clubs within a radius of 25 miles of Shamokin. Steele will assume office January 1, 1950.

Barbara Lawrence Wins Final Divorce Decree HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 28 (U.R)-Blond film actress Barbara Lawrence, 19, today had her final divorce decree from actor John Fontaine, whom she charged embarrassed her by telling friends she didn't give him enough spending money. The interlocutory decree was granted July 23, 1948, and her final decree was entered In Superior Court yesterday. Mooney. Falls, in Havasu Canyon, northern Arizona, is higher than Niagara, and is one of a series ot five fails in that canyon.

Search for County Girl Spreads to Baltimore State police at Milton have asked Baltimore, authorities to make search in that city for Rota Mae Jenkins, 15-year-old Northumberland High School girl, who disappeared September 9 after leaving home to attend school classes. Officers said they learned the girl purchased a bus ticket to Baltimore the day she disappeared. Police learned, also, that John 1-ordan, 18, Danville, disappeared from his home on the same date. Friends said Mor-dan and the Jenkins girl were in love and had spoken to them of plans to marry. Police believe both missing persons may be working in Baltimore.

iam 0. Inglis, Newsman, Expires William O. Inglis, Bronx, N. remembered in the region as a newspaperman who was assigned to the area shortly after the turn of the century to record activities of the notorious Maffia, or "Black Hand Society," died at the age of 87. Inglis, then a star reporter for the New York Herald, made his headquarters In Hazleton during his coverage of "Black Hand" murders and won national fame, not only in his newspaper coverage of the activities, but for subsequent reports in nationally known magazines.

Included among the murders in which he became interested was the memorable "Murder of Hickory Ridge," where a man believed to be an agent of the Maffia was behead- ed. The body was found in a culm bank at Hickory Ridge. The head was found a week after discovery of the body in a tree stump near Marion Heights. Identity of the murder victim was not solved. HOT Young Farmers Group Assists War Veteran Cressona Young Farmers Group, composed largely of veterans of i World War II, went Into action when the barn on the farm ol Levi Don ton, a fellow veteran of near Schuyl- kill H3ven, was destroyed by fire. The group cut timber and put It through a sawmill to get lumber for a new barn. With sufficient lumber prepared, several score mem bers gathered at the Donton farm and started construction of a new two-story barn, beginning with foundations. The barn will be completed this week. Donton, a disabled veteran, is the father of six small children.

Rev. Arthur Knoebel's Condition Called 'Fair' Condition of Rev. Arthur D. Knoebel, Tamaqua, former resident of Shamokin, who was stricken 111 late last week with an acute heart seizure in the parsonage of St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church, Tamaqua, is reported "fair' by doctors on the staff of Coaldale Stat Hospital.

Soon after Rev. Knoebel was stricken, his attending physician advised that he enter the hospital for further observation and treatment.
