Central MILD WEATHER IS AUGUST FEATURE IN ROGUE VALLEY Mild weather, characteristic of the summer months of 1932 in the Rogue River valley, prevailed throughout August, according to the meteorologIcal notes for August released by W. J. Hutchison, local meteorologist. Except for the first week when temperatures ranged in the higher levels. daily averages were mostly below normal.

A wide range in temperature was experienced during the month. with extremes approaching August records previous years. The highest, 107 degrees, on the 4th was but two degrees below the station record of 109 degrees and the lowest temperature, 41 degrees on the 31st, lacked but one degree of equalling the lowest record for August, making A range of 86 degrees for the month. Precipitation WaS limited to single shower of 0.12 inches of rain on the 14th and which, due to the dryness of the soll, was of little benefit to the locality. There were a few periods of threatening weather during the month and thunderstorms in the mountains were observed on occasions, however, rainfall from these storms failed to reach the valley.

August 31st closed the 1931-1932 rainfall season for the Pacific coast region and as a whole this season, for Medford and vicinity, was considered very successful. Although there were a few months with subnormal precipitations accumulations from sufficient ually wet months were off-set the drier periods, and at the close of the season an excess of 4.30 Inches is shown for the seasonal year. It is understood that water for completing the irrigation season in the valley is plentiful for all needs. Under the influence of the extenhigh pressure system which has covered the northeast Pacific ocean practically throughout the past summer months of July and August, and which has more or less controlled the summer weather in southwestern Oregon in 1932, cloudless skies prevailed during August with a few and widely separated periods of partly cloudy weather. There were no days recorded as being totally cloudy.

Northwesterly winds prevailed and a total wind movement of 4899 miles was recorded. On the 6th a monthly maximum velocity of 32 miles per hour, registered during a heavy south and southeasterly wind and dust storm. Some damage to pear crops in a few orcharda resulted from the sudden blow. Wind velocities for the month averaged 6.6 miles per hour, The eclipse of the sun on August 31st was observed at Medford 8.5 A partial eclipse, approximately 15 per cent obscurity being visible at 11:30 a. m.

Wilcox, county agent. The paradichlorobenzine method of control is highly successful if practiced within the next two weeks. Weak and devitalized peach, prune and apricot trees are more than likely infested with borers and should be treated AS follows: Level off the ground around the tree without turbing the subsoll. Apply threefourths to one once of finely crushed paradichlorobenzene crystals in A circle on inch wide around the tree trunk. The circle should be from one to two inches distant from the tree.

A few shovels full of fine soll should then be mounded around the tree and firmed well. The crystals slowly give off A gas that is heavier than air which setties in Around the tree and causes A killing of the borers within their trunks. For best results the soil should be dry and the temperature 55 degrees or warmer. Trees younger than five years of age should not be treated as the gan may injure roots. Such trees, If intested should be dewormed by means of a knife.
