(UPI) The Big Eight Conference has denounced the Amateur Athletic Union's (AAU) refusal to approve a world record by Kansas star Jim Ryun as "discriminatory handling." The Big Eight made a formal protest Thursday over the AAU's action in disapproving Ryun's 1:44.9 half mile clocking at the U.S. Track and Field Federation's outdoor track and field championships at Terre Haute, last June.

The AAU did not sanction the Terre Haute meet. In a resolution, the Big Eight said Ryun's time was approved by the AAU Track and Field Committee and the AAU records authority as an American record but held up as an international record by the AAU. "We are deeply concerned by the fact that this is not the first time the AAU has failed the sport of track and field and the athlete," the resolution said. "The full evidence of AAU mismanagement is spread in the records of the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee hearings in August of 1965.

This is an unjustified effort by the AAU to use an athlete as a weapon against the USTFF of which we happen to be members. This discriminatory action by the AAU must be corrected immediately," the conference said. The resolution, signed by faculty representatives from each of the Big Eight schools, asked "that the AAU be ordered to resubmit the record for international approval on the basis of the record itself and without the prejudicial com ment which reportedly accom panied the original submission." Bowling LADIES MONDAY NIGHT Team Standings Veteran Leading Doral Open By STANLEY M. BROWN MIAMI (UPI) The pressure will be on veteran golfer Homero Blancas today when he takes a one-stroke lead into the second round of the $100,000 Doral Open. Blancas, a 28-year-old Texan who has been golfing since age five, will have some of the biggest names in the game breathing down his neck when he tries to equal or better the record-tying 65 shot in Thursday's opening round.

Among those within easy distance of Blancas are super stars Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus who are two and three strokes away and such veterans as 1965 Doral champion Doug Sanders, the first golfer to turn the "blue monster" course in 65. One stroke behind Blancas at 66 were Tommy Aaron, who is for his first win in four years on the tour, and Joel Goldsitramd, who was a golfing teammate of Blancas at the University of Houston. He is also trying to come out of a "slump" he entered after winning the Seattle Open in 1966.

Blancas said his opening round 65 "was my best since winning at Seattle in 1966. I drove well and made very crucial putt." Palmer, who shot a four-under-par 67, said the "blue monster" played easier and joked that comedian Jackie Gleason, his partner in Wednesday's pro-am maitch, "straightened out my game. Three strokes off Blancas' sizzling first round pace at 68 were Nicklaus, Sanders, George Archer, Bob Goalby, Bert Greene, Harold Henming and Tom Weiskopf. Ml. Rick Barry Hits Again For Warriors By United Press International The Philadelphia 76ers are willing to join the National Basketball Association noise-abatement society by silencing Rick Barry. Philadelphia almost succeeded Thursday night as the 76ers contained the NBA's leading scorer for the first half and went on to beat the San Francisco Warriors 136-128. Barry was held to five points as foul difficulties limited his activity to only nine minutes in the first half. He went on a scoring tear in the third period, however, with a 21-poimt outburst and had San Francisco on top at 118-113 with six minutes remaining in the game. Philadelphia, with a well balanced attack throughout the game, rallied for 12 straight points and a 125-118 lead that ended the Warrior threat.

Barry was the game's high scorer with 37 points. Chet Walker led the 76ers with 27 points. Wilt Chamberlain netted 24 and grabbed a league high of 38 rebounds this season. Billy Cunningham scored 21 points and Hal Greer added 20. The Boston Celtics defeated the Chicago Bulls 114-108 in the first game of a doublehader at Philadelphia as Sam Jones and Larry Siegfried combined for 64 points.

The victory gave Boston an 8-0 season's edge over the Bulls, who are one of three teams that have yet to beat the Celts this season. New York and Cincinnati each bowed seven times to Boston in as many games. Jones' 33 points were high for the game while Bob Boozer scored 20 for Chicago, which managed to close to 106-102 with 2:56 remaining after trailing by 21 points at the start of the fourth quarter.
