The other died in the twilight of his career as a comedian. The star-to-have-been was James Stephenson, 52, who died of a heart attack. The veteran was Charlie Murray.

69, who died of pneumonia, contracted after a four- month illness. They died within a few hours of each other yesterday. Stephenson was to have begun this week a starring role for War ner Brothers. He had been promoted because of his portrayal of a lawyer in "The Letter." Murray is remembered for his work with George Sidney in the "Cohen and Kelley" comedies. Champagne in abundance and Qtf AMERICA'S MOST BELOVED DRAMA OF THE HUMAN HEART! Harold Btll Wright's immortal characttrs, with thtir strangt hates, their overpowering springs to vivid life in the screen's greatest Technicolor triumph I HAROLD BELL WRIGHT'S rryui waltz music last night attracted 440 screen celebrities and critics to the preview of "New Wine," one of the last film previews correspondents will be permitted to see.

A scheduled burying of a "time capsule," containing such items of 1941 Hollywood glamor as Dorothy Lamour's sarong and Lana Turner's sweater, for the citizens of 2941, was not held. The preview took place in the storage room of an old winery at Cucamonga, Cal. The picture, based on the life of Franz Schubert, stars two singers, illona Massey and her husband, Alan Curtis. After September advance film showings will be restricted to the trade. Draft Misses Nantucket NANTUCKET.

Mass. (U.R) This old whaling town is bearing up well under the burdens of selective service. Nantucket was assigned only one draftee by a recent quota and it developed that this draftee actually was a resident of Fair-haven, on the mainland. So Fair-haven officials did all the work of examining and inducting the lone recruit. July 30 U.R Eddie Leonard, one of the great end-men of all time, was mourned by the theatrical world and minstrel fans today.

He was found dear, yesterday, apparently of a heart a hotel where he had lived at the height of his career. Leonard was born Lemuel Gordon Toney. His exact age was not known. He was believed to be more than 70, although, according to his autobiography, "What a Life: I'm Telling You," he was only 65. Originally, Heligoland measured 120 miles round but weather and the sea have reduced it considerably.

That brings us to the hero hunt preliminary to the filming of "Sergeant York." It seems that Alvin York wasn't alone on his epic adventure in the Argonne Forest in 1918; he was one of a detail of men, 10 of whom still live. Warner Brothers wanted to be able to identify those men. bo the company sent its 'location manager, Bill Guthrie, to find them. The trip covered more than 10.000 miles, required weeks of searching, and cost as much as the complete production of some motion pictures, but I also like the story for the things that Guthrie found.

HILL ON THE LINE As a warm-up chore, he first went after nrxl signed these men: Secretary of State Cordell Hull; General John J. Pershing; E. C. Danforth, Augusta. Ga insurance man and formerly York's comoany commander; J.

M. Tillman, York's regimental colonel, who now raises oranges at Lafce Wales, Colonel George Buxton, of Providence, R. who as a major commanded York's battalion. They were a cinch. Guthrie then sought York's noncommissioned comrades.

He located ex-Private Percy Beardsley cutting wood on a farm near Roxbury, but first had to state his business to an aged father. "Perc," said the old man, "I kinda like this feler. Fetch out the pitcher." So Perc fetched the hard cider and the three toasted the old days while signing papers. Then Guthrie produced $50 as a binder on the $250 which, he explained, each of tihe 10 men would receive. "Perc!" I commanded the elder Beardsley, 'If etch out the jug!" In Boston, Guthrie found Otis V.

Merrithew, and in- spite of the difficulty of his search didn't ask why the ex-corporal's last name appears as "Cutting" on Army records. Anway, he's a city truck driver now, and after staying for dinner in a happy household the studio representative learned Merrithew's 8250 would start the eldest of three daughters in In Lawrence, Guthrie next located Patrick Donohue. No recol-lectable details. In Holyoke, he wrote a check to Joe Konotski, mill worker and father of six. Bernard Early, who was Alvin York's sergeant, was found in Hamden, waiting tables.

Into a dingy tenement in Manhattan's Italian quarter went Warners' agent to see Mario Mussi, now a night watchman. Received with suspicion, Guthrie finally was able to explain his mission to Mussi's sister-in-law, who was called in from a neighboring flat to serve as Interpreter. The former hero was alarmed and indignant when he was olfered $50. "It's something crooked!" he declared. "You get no money for nothing, any time." The argument took three hours.

ANONYMOUS HERO Also in Little Italy, Guthrie found Michael Saccini, porter in a barber shop. In Philadelphia at the edge of the city dump, he met, signed and paid cheerful George Wills, who had been living by salvaging bits of metal from the refuse. Up in Buffalo, he traced down Feodor Sok, content and comfortable in a veterans' CCC camp. I'm going to withhold the name of the tenth hero and the Texas town where he lives in a one room shack. When Bill Guthrie knocked and was told to come in, he entered and saw only the man's eyes.

Even the gloom of the place, the host hid behind a curtain. Maybe he was naturally shy. Possibly he was a war-ravaged monstrosity. Guthrie, remembering those burning eyes and talk they had, doesn't like to guess. Majestic Two New Pictures "Boss of Bullion City" and Devils Island Story Coming: Tomorrow Battling for freedom of the press in the old frontier West, Johnny Mack Brown, cowboy star, becomes a hard-riding, two-gun crusader against a powerful and corrupt outlaw group in Universale thrilling western; "Boss of Bullion City," which comes tomorrow to the Majestic Theatre.

Brown, supported by Fuzzy Knight, comedian, and Nell O'Day, western screen heroine, plays a belligerent newspaper editor who uncovers the lawless operations of a money-mad sheriff, portrayed by-Harry Woods. Maria Montez. Latin actress, is a victim of the sheriff's conspiracy. Riotous comedy scenes are said to be furnished by Knight. George Humbert and Earle Hodgins.

The Guadalajara Trio. Mexican musicians, present Spanish folk songs in specialty sequences of the film. The picture was directed by Ray Taylor from a screenplay bv Arthur St. Claire and Victor McLeod. William Sickner was the photographer.

Sally Eilers and Donald Woods come to the Majestic Theatre screen 1 tomorrow in Columbia's "I Was a Prisoner on Devil's Island," sensational new melodrama with Edward Ciannelli and Victor Kilian in important supporting roles. Suspense, adventure and intrigue figure prominently in this drama of earth's most abandoned outcasts, while romance backgrounds terror to highlight the thousand thrills of the film. According to advance reports, "I Was a Prisoner on Devil's Island" is packed with the raw meat of excitement, of flying fists and flaming passions under the merciless tropic sun. A film which scorches the screen with burning fury, "I Was a Prisoner on Devil's Island" tells the story of a young American sailor who, through a trick of fate, is suddenly dumped into the world's human scrap heap. Opposite Penna. Station Hi The salty, picturesque characters delineated by Wright are ones to the heart of any actor. It's easy to understand why many of Hollywood's most famous stars sought parts in the picture. John Wayne, Betty Field and Har-ly Carey were no doubt delighted when they succeeded in winning roles in i'ie film. John Wayne, we understand, enacts the role of Young Matt.

He is the reckless, romantic young mountain buck, hose love is spurned by Betty in the role of Smmy Lane, the vivacious youns spitfire of the hills, because she fears that Wayne's hot-headedness mUht lead him one day to have a killing on his conscience.
