In lieu of flowers, memorial MILLER ELIZA 92, of Gibsonia, died at home on September 3, 2007, after a long illness. Born December 30, 1914, she was the daughter of the late John Oliver Miller, vice-president of Peoples First National Bank Trust Company, a predecessor of PNC Corporation, and the late Lucy Kennedy Miller, suffragette, former president of the League of Women Voters and political activist.

Her maternal grandfather, Julian Kennedy, was a well-known engineer in Pittsburgh, who designed steel mills including the Homestead Furnace and the Tata Iron Steel Works in India, as well as inventing parts of the ferris wheel. The Eliza furnace and Eliza Street in Pittsburgh were both named after his granddaughter. A sculptor in steel, wood, bronze, terra cotta and slate, she was also a painter and draftsman, discovering her talent at an early age. She inherited some of her grandfather's mechanical intuitions, devising ingenious methods of moving some of her larger works, as well as teaching herself architecture and designing several houses for family, friends and associates. She went to art school in Philadelphia, studying with Albert Laessle, among others.

In the early 1930's she met and studied sculpture at Carnegie Tech with the late Janet deCoux, who became her lifelong partner. In 1937, she and fellow artist Ruth Stoller spent a year in Peru, setting up a studio in Lima pursuing her art there and creating an illustrated journal of her explorations throughout Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. In 1941, she moved to Gibsonia to live and work with Ms. deCoux and family. She attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, graduating in the department of sculpture in 1945.

While there, she and Janet lived for a while above the home of Charles Lindbergh and family, where they acted as nannies for the Lindbergh children. Both remained longtime friends of Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Together Eliza and Janet designed the interior of St. Thomas-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church in Gibsonia. Eliza created the baptismal font, the pulpit and lectern, and other parts of the sanctuary.

Most of Eliza's work was religious in nature. Since its founding in 1948, she remained an active member of the St. Thomas community where she was known for her loving and generous spirit as well as her artistic brilliance. Always self-effacing, she said she would probably be best remembered for helping people. She had no children of her own, but helped raise the children of her sister, Barbara Miller Shefler, who died at an early age.

She was regarded by many as a mother figure. Some of her representative pieces are "Pillar of an aluminum and steel sculpture in Wheeling, WV, the Declaration of Independence and other plaques on Corten steel at Sewickley Academy, the "Madonna of the a group of aluminum figures, stainless steel plaques of abstracted animals at Leechburg Elementary School, the sundial complex for Ellis School in Pittsburgh, the Stations of the Cross in slate at St. Scholastica in Aspinwall, enamel plaques for the medical department at Duquesne University, and a walnut sculpture of John Brown. She is survived by nieces Lucy and Eliza, nephews Peter, Michael, John and David, grandnieces Barbara, Cynthia, Julia, Lucy and Elizabeth, grandnephews Christopher, Neil, David and Peter, great grandnephew Nathaniel and great grandniece Beatriz. A vigil will be held in the chapel at St.

Thomas-in-the-Fields church Wednesday, September 5 through Friday September 7, from 2-8 PM. There will be a service at the church Saturday, September 8, at 11 AM, followed by internment in the chapel and a reception afterwards. Donations in Eliza's memory may be made to St. Thomas In-The-Fields Church, 4106 St. Thomas Drive, Gibsonia, PA 15044.
