Speaking in a television interview to be broadcast Friday on "A Current Affair," Garvey admitted he was unfaithful during his marriage, and lashed at Cyndy Garvey for co-writing "The Secret Life of Cyndy Garvey." A.L.

Roundup The Milwaukee manager inserted Deer into the No. 3 slot in the lineup and the rightfielder deftly responded by blasting a grand slam homer, highlighting a six-run sixth inning, in the Brewers' 11-1 pasting of the hapless Detroit Tigers. Deer, hitting .230, slugged a 2-1 pitch off reliever Charlie Hudson into the left-field bleachers for his 25th homer of the year, giving the Brewers a 9-1 lead. He also doubled in the first and scored. Paul Gibson, 2-5, gave up three runs on seven hits and took the loss.

The Tigers have dropped seven of eight and are 3-19 in July. Rookie Jaime Navarro, 2-3, scattered three hits over five innings, giving up a run on three hits while lowering his ERA to 2.88. Tony Fossas, Chuck Crim and Mark Knudson pitched the final four innings. The Brewers iced the victory in the sixth. Charlie O'Brien's fielder's choice scored Greg Brock from third and Molitor's double scored Gus Polidor and moved Spiers to third, giving Milwaukee a 5-1 lead.

Gantner was intentionally walked to load the bases and Deer followed with the grand slam. Brock slugged his seventh homer of the year in the seventh inning to give the Brewers a 10-1 lead. Yount singled in Molitior from third in the eighth. Elsewhere in the American League, Boston dropped Kansas City 7-2, Minnesota blasted Baltimore 10-6 and California clipped Chicago 8-5. Twins 10, Orioles 6 At Minneapolis, Kent Hrbek collected three RBI and Kirby Puckett had three hits and two RBI and send Baltimore to its eighth straight defeat.

Roy Smith, 6-4, gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings. Angels 8, White Sox 5 At Anaheim, Chili Davis and Jack Howell ripped three-run homers to power California. Rookie Jim Abbott, 9-6, scattered nine hits over seven-plus innings, allowing three runs for the win. Bryan Harvey notched his 14th save. Melido Perez, 7-11, took the loss only Chicago's second in 13 games since the All-Star break.

Baseball Chicago Activated pitcher Pat Perry and optioned him to Iowa of the American Association (AAA). Basketball Chicago Signed forward Jeff Sanders. Detroit Signed free agent forward Mark Hughes to a contract. Miami Released forward Dave Popson. Football Cleveland Signwed wide receiver Webster Slaughter to a 2-year contract extension.

Detroit Extended head coach Wayne Fontes contract through the 1993 season. Houston Signed running back Allen Pinkett and safety Craig Birdsong; agreed to terms with wide receiver Curtis Duncan, safety bubba McDowell and defensive lineman Glenn Montgomery. Phoenix Defensive end David Galloway agreed to a contract; By United Press International THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (UPI) Both the owner and the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys Thursday denied all rumors of an impending trade for rookie quarterback Steve Walsh. Owner Jerry Jones and Coach Jimmy Johnson in separate interviews during the Cowboy's training camp said there had been numerous offers for the star from the University of Miami, but that the Cowboys preferred that Walsh compete for the team's starting job.

Walsh was taken by the Cowboys as the No. 1 pick in the supplemental college draft, even though Dallas already had taken UCLA star quarterback Troy Aikman as the No. 1 overall choice in the tegular college draft. Aikman has been signed, but contract negotiations still are underway with Walsh. TAMPA, Fla.

(UPI) The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have this problem: How to bolster the pass rush while maintaining success against the run? The Buccaneers placed virtually their entire defensive emphasis on stopping the run last season and that effort produced phenomenal results. Two years after allowing 4.6 yards per rushing attempt, the Buccaneer run defense proved the NFL's stingi- waived quarterback Mike Horton, running back Harvey Reed, run ning back Ryan Knight, defensive back Keith Lewis, defensive back Darren Jones and fullback Ted Petrasky. Compiled By C-H Sports Editor Jim Brown From UPI And Other Sources Buc's Sweep Mets est unit in 1988, yielding just 3.2 yards per carry. Half of Tampa Bay's opponents averaged less than 3 yards per rush and only one back, Stump Mitchell of St. Louis, cracked 100 yards.

With most of their schemes designed to stuff the run, Tampa Bay's pass defense suffered last year. Opposing passers completed 57.7 percent of their attempts and suffered only 20 sacks. "We said last year we were gonna stop the run, and we did that," said defensive coordinator Doug Graber. "But we also gave up way too many big plays for the scheme we were playing. There's nothing more disheartening to a team than to be physically whipped along line of mage.

-r-. PITTSBURGH (UPI) Mike Webster now employed by the Kansas City Chiefs, the Pittsburgh Steelers are training at St. Vincent College in Latrobe without a starting center for the first time in more than 20 years. Webster, the Steelers' fifthround draft choice in 1974, served the team for 14 seasons, and before him there was Ray Mansfield, who joined the team in 1964. But unlike 1976 when Mansfield retired and Webster was the obvious heir apparent, Steelers Coach Chuck Noll said he was going to hold open competition for the starting spot.

The candidates are secondyear players Dermontti Dawson and Chuck Lanza, plus free agent Gene Cullinane. LATROBE, Pa. (UPI) It's been more than five years since Carlton Haselrig tackled a running back, but only a few months since he tossed an athlete to the ground. Haselrig hopes the basic man-moving skills he honed as three-time NCAA Division I heavyweight wrestling champion for Pitt-Johnstown will help offset his lack of college football experience and enable him to make the Pittsburgh Steelers as a nose tackle. As a 12th-round draft choice, the 6-foot-l, 265 pounder is counting on his exceptional work habits, quickness and natural strength to secure a position.

Haselrig says he cannot use his years away from the field as an excuse for mistakes. "I'm not thinking that it'd be natural to make a mistake, because if you fail, then you say that's OK, too," he said. "I'm not in that situation. I want to make the team." CARLISLE, Pa. (UPI) With Doug Williams and Mark Rypien battling for the starting job and prospect Stan Humphries waiting in the wings, quarterback seemed the last position where the Washington Redskins needed improvement.

So, of course, the Redskins used their second draft pick to select a quarterback, Long Beach State's Jeff Graham. Now, Graham is struggling to win a roster spot at training camp at Dickinson College. "I'm just going to go out there every day do Lean," he said i after decision is.not anyway scj can do is play the best I possibly can and have somebody else make that decision." Coach Joe Gibbs said while the team does not need another quarterback, the team's philosophy is look at any quarterback believed to have NFL ability. HOUSTON (UPI) Houston Oilers wide receiver Drew Hill says he will not report to training camp until the club agrees to renegotiate his contract. "Right now, I don't plan to be there," Hill said from Atlanta.

"My agent sent Mike Holovak some numbers in the mail. I just want to be paid what the other top receivers in the league are paid." Hill reportedly wants a three-year, $3 million contract. He currently is in the final year of a contract that pays him $400,000 annually. Holovak, the Oilers general manager, said Wednesday he is open to discussing a contract extension for Hill. "I want Drew in camp with the rest of the players that are under contract," he said.

"If he comes to camp, 111 be happy to sit down and talk to him about it." But Holovak said any player under contract who is not in camp Friday will be fined $1,500 a day. Hill, 32, made the Pro Bowl last season, when he had a career-high 72 catches for 1,141 yards and 10 touchdowns. His 4,411 receiving yards since 1985 ranks second only to San Francisco's Jerry Rice in the NFL. Bob Kipper, 3-3, pitched one inning, surrendered two unearned runs, and was credited with the victory. Don Aase, 1-3, took the loss.

The Mets, who were last swept in a three game series by Montreal back in June, took an 8-5 lead into the seventh. But the Pirates staged their second five-run outburst of the game to take a 10-8 lead. Mets reliever David West loaded the bases. Jose Lind singled, Bobby Bonilla reached safely on a fielder's choice and Barry Bonds drew a walk. Aase relieved, promptly walking RJ Reynolds on four pitches.

That forced in another run, to cut the Mets lead to 8-6. Aase was replaced by Randy Myers who walked pinch hitter Glenn Wilson to force in another run before Jay Bell's three-run triple put the Pirates ahead 10-8. Elsewhere in the National League, Cincinnati whipped San Diego 6-1, Los Angeles rallied past Houston 7-5 and Alanta clobbered San Francisco 10-1. Reds 6, Padres 1 At Cincinnati, Rolando Roomes went 3 for 4 with a homer and Tim Leary, 7-8, scattered eight hits over eight innings to help the Reds snap a 10-game losing streak, the club's longest in 23 years. Dodgers 7, Astros 5 At Houston, pinch hitter Eddie Murray belted a threerun homer with one out in the ninth and Jay Howell notched his 20th save.

Mike Morgan, 711, pitched the eighth for the win. Larry Andersen, 2-3 took the loss. Braves 10, Giants 1 At Atlanta, Dale Murphy hit two three-run homers in the sixth inning to highlight a lOrun outburst and starter Tom Glavine worked eight innings to improve to 9-6. Murphy became the 14th player in the National League to hit two home runs in an inning. Murphy's six RBI in one inning also tied a majorleague record.
