In the face of their rampaging road record 24 wins and five losses "Home Sweet Home" would sound hollow. The Bengals have lost nine and won eight at Briggs.

Detroit Manager Red Rolfe was jubilant enough over his blazing swing through the East, capped by a victory over the second-place Yankees and t. three-game sweep at Boston. But, the Tiger boss said he still figured New York and Boston the top contenders for the pennant, and Detroit just a dark horse. "Sure, some of the boys have been playing a bit over their heads and arc bound to cool off sooner or later. It's how much they cool off that's going to decide our chances," he said and he said it seriously.

"We just get Hal Newhouser working right again and Virgil Trucks comes up with a sore arm," Rolfe said. The biggest surprise of the Detroit staff is aging but still effectiveDizzy Trout. He's come up with four victories against no defeats. "We're a club with too many 'ifs' to be a real favorite," Rolfe theorized. The youngster is Bob Miller, a Detroit product who somehow escaped the ever-watchful eyes of the Tiger scouts and may help bring the once-futile but now-fighting Phillies home a vear ahead of time. Miller's record currently is four wins against no defeats, two of those victories being shutouts, and his fantastic record after leaping from "jClass ball to the majors one stride is credited to a two-speed fast ball which picks up momentum as it nears the plate. The Phillies' two prize youngsters of the hill are Robin Roberts and Curt Simmons, but Manager Eddie admits that Miller may surpass them both. He has the equip-iment-along with surprising poise. Don't just take Sawyer's word for it.

Listen to Frank Dascoli, the umpire who worked behind the plate in -Miller's 4-0 shutout of the Reds. "I have never seen such poise in a young pitcher," Dascoli insisted. And on top of that, Miller is unbelievably fast. His quick one takes off about 10 or 15 feet from the plate and shoots like a bullet." It was this unusual pitch whicn attracted Sawyer's attention during spring training and caused the Phillies' manager to jump Miller all the way to Shibe Park from Terre Haute in the Three-Eye League. The six foot, three inch right hander with the calm brown eyes pitched at Terre Haute in 1948, scoring six wins against five losses, and then really went to town last year as he won 19 against seven defeats.

In compiling that mark, the brown-haired 190-pounder hurled 25 complete ames. The Phillies had grabbed him at the national amateur tournament in Youngstown, Ohio, and when Sawyer saw that Merriwell pitch during spring training, he decided to gamble on the youngster. "I used him in relief at first, just to let him get the feel of things," Sawyer explained. "Then on April 29 I decided to give him a chance." It was a wise decision, for Miller, unperturbed at his first major league starting assignment, won a close 2 to 1 triumph over the Boston Braves, setting the Beantown Indians down with six hits. Sawyer immediately put him back in relief work, to "keep the pressure from building up." Miller drew his second start against the Cardinals May 6 and beat them, 11 to 7, although Hank Borowy relieved him in the sixth.

His third time out he shut out Pittsburgh, 3 to 0, with three hits, and then on 7 threw a seven-hit 4-0 shutout at the Reds. In his last start, Pittsburgh was leading him, 4 to 3, when he was lifted in the seventh for a pinch hitter. The Phils tied the game, so Miller was not affected by the outcome. But when Pittsburgh finally got to him in the third inning of that game, Miller had pitched' 25 scoreless innings and had an earned run average of 1.125, a throwback to the dead ball era. In 48 innings he had given up only six earned runs.

That's why the Phils are high on Miller, and feel that his delayed action fast ball may speed up their pennant timetable. And from the looks of things, it just might, at that. Eastern League The two top teams in the Eastern Ensfc'uail League sustained defeats last night. The league-leading Wilkes-Barre Indians were trounced, 11-3. by the Binghamton Triplets.

Binghamton collected a total of eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Bill Dyck scattered seven Wilkes-Barre bingles. holding the Indians scoreless until the seventh frame. Second place Albany was shaded by the Elmira Dodgers, 4-3. Elmira was held to eight hits compared to Albany's 14 but three Senator errors helped the Dodger cause.

The winning run came in the eighth inning after Albany had tied the score in en uphill battle. The Hartford Chiefs and the Williarmport Tigers divided a dou-bleheader. Hartford staged a 16-hit attack to win the first game, 11-8, on three runs in the ninth inning Alex Nedelco hurled a six-hitter as the Tigers edged the Chiefs, 4-3, in the nightcap. The Boston Red Sox beat their Scranton farm club. 9-3.
