Aug 25 2005 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE THURSDAY, AUGUST 25, 2005 W-7 Beaver Falls Police have a new three-year agreement with the Big Beaver Falls Area School District to pay officers $80 for security at school events. Fire Chief Mark Stowe reported Aug. 22 that his diving team had finished scuba training. The dive team also trained on deployment and search patterns while diving for evidence at the request of the county district office. Crafton Although there has been limited work on a walking trail planned several years ago for the Chartiers Creek area, council took action to keep a $180,000 grant available for the project by seeking an extension of the trail grant, which is to expire Wednesday.

Borough officials are continuing to work with representatives of Pennsylvania American Water Co. to replace trees damaged during a recent repair project on Dinsmore Avenue. Council was critical of the company and its subcontractors for not properly notifying the borough of the project and for causing detours forneighbors. A smaller species of tree will be planted in the Clearview Park area to replace those killed during a recent herbicide project conducted by Duquesne Light Co. Heidelberg People who live on Collier Street are up in arms about speeding on their street, and they presented a petition to council Aug.

16 requesting that the 35 mph speed limit be lowered and more strictly enforced. Borough Secretary Ginny McIntyre said the borough was in the process of training more of its officers in using the VASCAR speed detection system, which she said should step up enforcement. Mayor Kenneth LaSota said Collier Street was a state road and that he borough recently met with state Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Robinson, to discuss the speeding issue and the lowering of the speed limit to 30 mph. He said a speed monitor device was recently erected and that the borough could request a traffic study.

In the meantime, he said, borough police will target Collier Street for tougher enforcement. Solicitor Michael Kaleugher reported that little progress was being made on the proposed Wal- greens drugstore, which is being planned for Route 50 and Greentree Road. The drugstore will replace the and the Oasis Restaurant. Kaleugher said the development was in the hands of the Allegheny County Planning Commission and that no action would be taken until the county clears up reservations it has about traffic flow and entrances and exits to the proposed development. Council has approved the plan.

been a slight change to the curfew ordinance. The borough no longer will be required to send a certified notification letter to the parents of a child who violates the curfew. Parents still will be notified of their curfew violation, but they will be asked to come to the police department to pick them up. On the second offense, the child will be cited and the fine could be up to $600 for violation of the curfew. The curfew applies to all children under 18 years old.

The curfew for children 17 to 14 years of age is 11 p.m. For children 12 and 13, the curfew is 10:30, and for children 11 and under, the curfew is 10. Exceptions are allowed for children with jobs, or those who attend religious or school events. The child must inform police of the event and the reason for being out after curfew. Children also can be on the sidewalk outside their homes after curfew or on adjacent sidewalks as long as adults do not object or if they are accompanied by their parents.

Industry The borough has erected a gazebo at Route 68 and Pine Grove Road and has dedicated it and a surrounding parklet to former Mayor and Councilman Clyde Piquet, who had served the community for nearly six decades before his death in Feb. 2004. Piquet, who was 86 when he died, worked as a pattern maker at McIntosh-Hemphill in Midland. He also had served on various municipal and school district boards. The gazebo, with a brass plaque in his honor, was dedicated July 10.

Piquet was tax collector from 1946 to 1958 and served on the planning board in 1954-64, during which time he was involved in developing the comprehensive plan. He was a council member in 1969-73, mayor in 1974-91, and served on the zoning hearing board in 1994-2002.
