and British guest stars and top acts of European circuses. The premiere, host was comedian Jack Carter. If one were to sum up the debut, it might be described as 'something old, riot much new, a good deal borrowed, and a considerable amount blue. The blueness came in the form of Carter's often-funny but borderline risque gags that seemed out of tune with the obvious family-appeal attempt of the show. Likewise, the hour was reminiscent of so many things that one has seeh regularly on AT 7:15 9:45 JASON ROBARDS JULIE HARRIS A THOUSAND CLOWNS PECK ARABESQUE The real excitement begins when they run out of bullets! Bikini" television the Ed Sullivan show; Don Ameche's circus series, "International Show- and just about any run- of-the-mill variety program. There was one thing, however, that the series did have-and that is a truly imaginative and elegant setting that makes seem more pleasant than it really is to tune in. The set is a sort of center ring or stage opera-style boxes for the audience Cat least they look like boxes), with the whole thing illuminated spectacularly by countless plain but decoratively arranged bulbs. setting- does, have its occasional problems, however for the performers who may have trouble working in the round. For example, songstres Jane Morgan did her numbers without playing to the people all around her, which means many in the British audience ad her performing away from them, which violates a cardina show business rule.

Cartel smartly worked around to all those on hand. Perhaps one of the reasons the show didn't seem very exciting is that there were a good number of so-called "dangerous" circus acts--the aerialist, the lion tamer, the sword-balancer, the high-perch pair, and so forth. Yet really the advance taping of so-callec dangerous circus acts takes all the element of fear or thrills out of them because we know the network is hardly likely to present a segment that involves a fatal or otherwise serious mishap. No one in his right mind, of course, wants to see. one--yet the thrill of circus danger is undeniably gone.

In short, "Hippodrome" is kind of show one can watch while listening to a baseball jame on the side, without much 'ear of missing anything. Here is a hand where West held two five- card suits and felt compelled to show both of them. His opponents went on to play the hand and made their contract due to the information given by West's bids." Oswald: "West had no'hing to gain by his three-club bid. His opponents were bidding major suits and might have been able to double him had their minor suit cards been distributed differently." Jim: "Well, West wasn't vulnerable.

As it was, South played the hand well. He started by duckme the diamond opening, i West t'cntirvaed the suit a i South in with ace. He df crted that West had to hold five cards in each minor suit for his bids. That would leave only three cards in the majors and if his singleton was in hearts a trump finesse would be needed. Could he find out about that singleton?" Oswald: "Let's see.

He led a spade to dummy's king and returned to his own hand by ruf- fing a diamond. Then he led a second spade to the ace. When West followed, South played his ace and another trump, finessed against East's jack, trumps and eventually lost two clubs." Jim: "His line of play also guarded against a singleton spade in the West hand. a West ruffed the second spade South would have been able to discard one of his clubs on the spade ace later on and i make his contract."
