Jun 16 2006 PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE SUNDAY, JUNE 18, 2006 WWW.POST-GAZETTE.COM W-2 A small black cat is large in Edgewood, where she is an with the run of the house. She is a good pet, always using her litter box and scratching posts. have had several cats in my life, but never had one as friendly and affectionate as she Paulette Balogh said. thought she might be afraid of people after what been Perhaps you saw this picture in newspapers and on television newscasts. A Good Samaritan called Pittsburgh Animal Control in February to report a cat wandering around on Frankstown Road.

A thick coating of white paint covered most of her fur, including her face. Animal Control took her to the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania. Cats generally hate baths, but this one stood patiently while workers at the East Liberty shelter applied copious amounts of shampoo and water. When that make a dent in the paint, an off-duty employee was called in. Betsy Goetz worked part time as the Pets for the Elderly coordinator, but she was a full-time professional groomer for many years, and she has a lot of tricks up her sleeve.

Armed with dish-washing detergent and a cleaning product called Goop, Mrs. Goetz got most of the paint off. She used scissors to cut the rest of the paint-coated fur. The cat submitted to the second bath with neither a growl nor a whimper. Shelter workers named the cat Betsy, in honor of Mrs.

Goetz. Go to our Web site at www.post- gazette.com/pg/06048/656750-85.stm to see the Feb. 17 story, which includes a picture of the bath in progress. There is something about the look, including wide-set ears, that is reminiscent of Siamese or some other exotic cat breed, though her eyes are yellowish green rather than blue. think she is part Ms.

Balogh said. very vocal. She talks to Ms. Balogh looking for a pet, but Betsy called out to her. last cat died last October and I think I wanted another.

I saw Betsy in the news and she reminded me of my favorite cat, Ms. Balogh made repeated calls to the shelter. So did many other people, for many people wanted the painted cat. The adoption process was delayed when Betsy contracted a respiratory ailment in the shelter and was sent to a foster home to recover. On April 7, the shelter called Ms.

Balogh in for an interview. Adoption counselors liked Ms. Balogh. The cat liked Ms. Balogh.

Ms. Balogh liked the cat. Animal Rescue League had another happy ending. The name, by the way, is still Betsy. Mrs.

Goetz and Ms. Balogh stay in touch by telephone. The person who painted the cat was not caught. A $500 reward for information is still out there. Anyone with information can call the shelter at 412-661-6452.

Can we chat? The rst Pet Tales online chat was held June 1, and six nice people logged in for the one-hour maiden venture. You can read the transcript at www.post-gazette.com/pg/ It was a nice showing, especially for a rst time. Some of the rst time chatters had questions about training, including how do you stop young, friendly dogs from jumping up on everyone. While those kinds of questions are best-handled by trainers, chat participants had some helpful tips. I enjoy readers in person, on the telephone, by e-mail and, now, on an Internet chat.
