Marmaduke ® By Brad Anderson HOROSCOPE /JERALDINE SAUNDERS ARIES (March 21-April 19): Go ahead and act on your intuitions. Spur-of-the-moment purchases should give perfect satisfaction. Someone special really is thinking about you, too, and your own unique thoughtfulness can create a cozy meeting of the minds. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You appear somewhat more glamorous than usual, so take advantage of the stars and appear prominently in the public eye to attract positive reviews. It is a good time to buy a new outfit or get a head start on Christmas shopping. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Speak from the heart and others will listen. You could have lucky inspirations where social matters are concerned, so go ahead and send that invitation or call that attractive gal or guy you’ve had your eye on. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Early morning confusions soon give way to an aura of energetic accomplishment. Use this day to complete projects and put the finishing touches on business tasks. If you get wind of glamorous and exciting ideas for the weekend, be sure to sign up as fun is guaranteed. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Strike while the proverbial iron is hot. Make agreements now while all parties are in perfect accord. The longer you wait to implement ideas the more likely it is that someone will find a way to shrewdly take advantage. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It is an excellent time to act as a go-between and bring opposing factions into agreement. You have the gift of gab and can paint a picture with words that makes beautiful sense to all concerned. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): A loving twinkle in someone’s eye is truly meant for you, so cast doubts aside. Money might be beating a path to your door, as well — so be ready for extra work and a surge in your popularity. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You may experience a few moments when your temper threatens to get out of hand, but others are willing to offer a soothing word or two to put you back on track. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Spend money wisely by following the lead of friends and neighbors. Relationships get a shot in the arm from helpful celestial conditions, so enjoy walking a mile in the other person’s shoes. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Partners may push and prod, but it is meant in the best interests of all concerned. Put your mule ears aside and be agreeable. You might have a Midas touch where cash is concerned, so spend on a whim or be wildly impractical. AQ UARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): It doesn’t matter whether you are on the right wing or the left wing where politics is concerned. Just remember that birds of a feather flock together. Preen your plumage and strut your stuff. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Love letters and heartfelt sentiments can be conveyed in 21st century containers these days so it doesn’t matter if you receive a cell phone message or an e-mail for old-fashioned affections to blossom. IF DECEMBER 9 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Turmoil is behind you and rewards for your faithfulness and hard work are ahead in 2005. This month you might lean toward facts and figures, changing your mind again and again about something important — but in January and February you can expect gratuities and enormous help from others that will guide you in the right direction. Be ready to accept the guiding hand of powers larger than you are in May. ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF The dividing line between lunatic and genius is always a fine one. When this deal came up at the Dyspeptics Club, South mis- classified one of his opponents — a costly error. North optimistically raised his partner’s fourth-seat weak two (showing 9-12 points) to game, and West led the three of spades to the king and ace. Declarer discarded a club on the top diamonds, then in an effort to discover more about the location of the outstanding high cards, played a fourth diamond, discarding a second club. Events took a curious turn when West ruffed her partner’s winner to continue with the club ace. South pitched a spade on this, and now West continued with the spade queen before playing a second club to East’s king, which South ruffed. Declarer considered the clues. As neither East nor West could open the bidding, each was limited to 11 points. West was likely to have both the ace and queen of clubs, as East had played the king on the second round. Also the queen of spades was probably West’s only honor in that suit. Had that player held the queen- jack of spades, she would have led the queen initially. Why had West ruffed her partner’s diamond winner? Surely , that was not from an initial holding of king-third. Lunatic, decided declarer, who now played the heart queen to the seven... and ace. One down. And did West realize that she had ruffed her partner’s diamond trick? Only the shadow knows.
