Marmaduke ® By Brad Anderson HOROSCOPE /JERALDINE SAUNDERS ARIES (March 21-April 19): Tantalizing new faces may come into view for singles, but you may be better off keeping budding romances at arm’s length until after the holidays. Passionate fires could easily falter at the critical moment. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): As a long holiday weekend begins, you are at a peak of attractive allure and likely to feel desirable and enchanting. Make the most of your current popularity and spend some extra time with friends. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Plans may need to change, but too much determined focus on the status quo may interfere with graceful flexibility. Try to be less demanding and more understanding if situations become temporarily exasperating. CANCER (June 21-July 22): When there is a lot to do, things can get hot under the collar. You are in a take-charge mood and enthusiastic about preparing for holiday celebrations. Avoid hostile words that could dampen the beginning of a fun-filled weekend. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): When the cat’s away, the mice will play — and if you were a mouse, you would breathe a big sigh of relief since you can let down your guard once the holiday weekend begins. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): A tendency to be curt and abrupt could cause a little friction with others. Existing obligations may create the need for some intense last-minute maneuverings. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You are so excited to get out into the social whirl of holiday events that you may miss an important message. Small mix-ups could occur. You are at your best when entertaining friends or enjoying one-of-a-kind entertainments. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Being the strong silent type might cause crossed signals, so be sure to explain yourself carefully. The heavens are shifting and dull routine is quickly left behind. Someone special may have an amorous surprise waiting for you. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Do your best to be uplifting and positive if a significant other seems gloomy and down in the dumps. Remember that actions speak louder than words. Prepare for an evening that is out of the ordinary. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You get a chance to mentally shift gears and move into the fast lane as the holiday weekend approaches. Close companions could be tense and somewhat agitated but you have the perfect tactful touch to handle any situation. AQ UARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Excitement is bubbling up beneath the surface and you are raring to go this holiday weekend. Significant others could experience last minute crises if travel is on the agenda. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Don’t take discontented grumbling from others at face value. It is a good night to get out and about or visit with friends. Break loose from restrictions and start the holiday weekend off with a bang. IF NOVEMBER 24 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: This year you may learn that to reach your goals and achieve independence you must also face disapproval for your errors. Having autonomy could mean taking care of all the small details on your own and having no place to lay the blame but on your self. Rules that no longer have meaning for you must be cast aside and in 2005 you will reach a happy point where you can take pride in your ability to juggle past obligations with present commitments. In April and October you could attract someone special into your life to share your joy and enthusiasms. ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF On this four-heart contract from the New Orleans Nationals, the majority of the field went astray — both on offense and on defense! Say, as declarer, on the spade 10 lead, you cover with dummy’s queen to encourage the defense to play three rounds of spades. East should probably not take the bait — how could he realistically expect to promote a trump here? The winning defense is to shift to a diamond. This sets the hand by force when partner has the diamond king. Of course, if partner has the diamond ace, all defenses are going to work. In practice, when East made the natural play of leading a third spade, declarer ruffed high and West pitched a discouraging club. South should assume that this meant West probably had five clubs, since he could not afford to discard from a four-card suit here. If so, maybe the best play is to pass the club queen at once. Then South wins the diamond return in hand and runs all of the trumps. On the last heart West is squeezed in the minors. He has to discard his diamond king or come down to only two clubs, whereupon declarer finesses in clubs and cashes dummy’s last two clubs. Of course, there is still a defense when East wins the club king. If he returns a second club, he cuts declarer’s communications. At the table Joe Grue (one of the U.S. World Champion juniors) actually found that play against Joe Kivel. Nicely done!
