er je Pail? Charlottesville Virginia Sunday October 29 1978 OT Clemson Whips State iO Brown Excels Cavalier Rookies ind UVa Physical Commentary By GARY CRAMER Progress Sports Editor University of Virginia basketball coach Terry Holland has always contended that at times his team physical enough although the fifth year UVa coach would probably have a hard time convincing two of the newest Cavaliers of that belief This past Wednesday Holland put his 13 man team through a 30 minute game type scrim mage and two of the three freshmen players on the squad failed to last for the duration Jeff Jones a 6 3 guard' from Owensboro Ky went down early A little over two minutes into the second 10 minute period in the scrimmage Jones playing for the Orange team was speeding in for a fastbreak layup with soph omore Jeff Lamp on his heels There was a collision in midair as Jones went up for the basket with both Kentuckians crashing to the floor hard Jones took a good knock to the head and left the floor not to return for the day a little woozy Late in the scrimmage 6 9 first year player Pete MacBeth a Marietta Ga product took an elbow to the face that re quired a few stiches above his eye think banging that said Holland getting people hurt so I guess going at it pretty While Virginia has been la beled a basket ball team by some in the past Holland buy that He feels that the Cavaliers have been pushed around a little too much at times and with Marc lavaroni no longer around to police the lane he is concen trating on making the 1978 79 Cavaliers an aggressive bunch kids have been by and large too he said i ribly people feel like a physical team but I think we are 1 see our kids as more of finesse type players But sometimes you have to Holland certainly will be able to field a team on the floor that could be big and strong al though just what kind of lineup Proponents of the betting referendum argue that considerable financial benefits to the county will materialize from racing but that depends on the success and quality of racing in the state It is cer tainly true that Virginians are at present spending millions of dollars a year at the races in Maryland and account for a least a third of the pari mutuel handle in West Virginia Having a track in state is unlikely to create a race of gambling fields here people 'who gamble do so now and people who do he will use remains a big ques time with 6 6 Michael Owens at tion mark the other forward He could 6 9 senior Steve Castellan make that lineup even bigger by 6 10 Otis ulton who sat out last year and 6 8 Terry Gates should be able to hold their own in any shoving matches under neath the basket But Holland decided just how he will utilize those three inside players yet He could field a lineup that has Castellan and ulton (up to 245 pounds) in there at the same field goal that cut the deficit to 10 3 North Carolina State forced a quick Clemson punt and began a drive to tie the score The march bogged down near mid field and on fourth and four the fake punt at tempt was stopped short With three minutes left in the half the Tigers mounted a 58 yard march to take a 16 3 half time lead uller hit his favor ite passing target Jerry Butler with six seconds left until inter mission for the score from two yards out far as I am concerned that faked punt was the big play of the ball said uller after the bailgame gave us good field position and we went down and got the Clemson put the game out of reach early in the second half Lester Brown broke loose for 11 yards and his second touchdown one for the touchdown and McElroy adding the point after The drive was highlighted by a Shealy to Pugh completion of 21 yards which put the Tide on the Tech one The Hokies took the kickoff back and on their third play Lewis scooted up the middle broke to his right for a 25 yard pick up and a first at the Tide four However the Hokies cash in de spite Alabama having two roughing the passer penalties called on them On the next play Alabama fans roared in the background and Tech waiting for things to quiet down was called for delay of game Lamie was then sacked for a 10 yard loss which put Tech at the Tide 30 After a near interception Alabama was guilty of roughing the passer Tech then attempted to score again but Lewis was stopped after two yards aced with fourth and 13 Lamie fired incomplete to Ron Zollicoffer in the end zone Shealy fumbled the snap and Albritten recovered for the Gobblers at the 11 on the next play Two incomplete passes another delay of game and Tech was again backed up to the 16 Another incomplete pass to Mickey itzgerald and another delay of game by Tech and the Hokies were again moving backwards Defensive back Allen Crusbley inter cepted for the Tide but Alabame was roughing the passer again But Crumbley to be denied as he snagged another Lamie pass and returned to the Tide 44 With the Hokies frustrated coming away with nothing on 12 plays from inside the 30 Alabama put another score on the board in four plays candidate himself had his typ dug in and forced State to settle ical workmanlike day passing for Nathan 19 yard for 118 yards and one touch down and running for 17 addi tional yards want to say something about stressed Pell "He only practiced one day this week He hurt his ankle early in our game last week What you saw today from him was pure talent not Two passes for 25 yards by uller and a 24 vard scamper by Lester Brown set up a one yard TD plunge by Brown less than a minute into the second quarter that made the score 10 0 NC State which had only two first downs but punted five times in the first 19 minutes fi nally got a break when Clem Lester Brown fumbled on his own 16 The Pack worked down to a first and goal on the two but the Tiger defense led by Bubba Brown and end Steve Gibbs As far as the question of racing contributing to the delinquency of an elected official it seems cer tain that is is the duty of the electorate to select men and women who can stand the heat to labor in the kitchen Certainly there are very great problems in cre ating a successful racing atmosphere Racetracks fail like any other business enterprise if ineptly managed But surely that is the problem of the horsemen all they ask of the voters is the opportu nity to try their best for their industry Horsemen discount the difficulties as ones they are accustomed to no count help not enough loans track management incompetence political hin drance competition from other horsemen wretched horses and busted machinery only a beginning a list ranging from the major to the minor Why should they be denied the key to the growth of th business? If they like the life God help them and if it does not pollute the air why hamper them in their pursuit of happiness? or happiness it surely is and if the horsemen stress the advantages not travel to Charles Town now are not likely to travel to wherever a track might be ten years from now In any event Virginians voted 491124 to 290168 eight years ago to repeal the prohibition of lotte ries which covers pari mutuel betting in some odd way so it would seem that the voice of the people has been exercised on the matter Opponents to the bill are not simply being con trary: they are raising a valid point that has come up countless times not only in the governance of a democratic society but in our daily lives with one another To what extent can a strong privileged segment of society protect the weak or disenfran chised member from the consequences of his de fects? What is the extent of our responsibility for those who have none of their own? This question has been settled constitutionally time and again most notably in the repeal of Pro hibition Yet it will never be decided morally while there is breath in us We have no right to deny ev eryone something for the sake of a few but it is always our duty to help those who cannot make the running By BAVID BISSET New River Newspapers TUSCALOOSA Ala It the running'of halfback Tony Nathan or half back Major Ogilvie that hurt the Virginia Tech Gobblers here Saturday It was the superb pass catching by split end Keith Pugh and tight end Dick Neal that stopped the Hokies as they suffered a 35 power run ning of Ogilvie Despite not putting any points on the scoreboard Virginia Tech coach Bill Dooley was still pleased with the effort given of all let me congratulate the University of Alabama They have an ex cellent football team and certainly de serve their national ranking was proud of the effort of our football Dooley declared players wanted to play Alabama and they lined up nose to nose and proved that they could I thought our defense generally did an ex cellent or a team that had been favored to lose by a large margin Tech played on an even scale with Alabama But it was the big play or catch that hurt Tech the most After Jerome Pannell intercepted a Jeff Rutledge pass at the Tech 35 early in the contest the Hokies drove to the Alabama 31 where the Tide defense stopped quar terback David Lamie twice Placekicker Paul Engle attempted a 51 yard field goal but the low kick hit the crossbar or otherwise the 62210 home coming crowd would have been stunned by the Hokies scoring first in the game '4 4 4 Note: ollowing is the final part of a contractors plumbers and electricians They hire three part series on the issure of pari mutuel racing tn Virginia By JANIE MACAULEY Progress Horse Writer The legalization of pari mutuel betting would cer tainly have particular consequences for this county of Albemarle Although the county would not actu ally have a racetrack in its midst the many local breeders owners trainers and exercise riders might anticipate new employment opportunities and a major new outlet for their wares: young horses ready willing and able to run Such Alabama continued to go to its receivers Then Johnson gave it to Ogilvie who ended with 58 yards on 12 attempts which was the best running per formance among the 12 running backs who saw action in the game The Hokies never got going offensively until Alabama had its third touchdown with 3:44 showing in the third period On its second possession of the second half Alabama drove 67 yards in eight plays with Ogilvie diving over from the By STEVE GOODMAN of The Progress Staff RALEIGH NC Brown is better than your Brown our Brown is better than That catchy refrain sung to the tune of in the kitchen with by the Clemson cheerleaders just about summed up the 33 10 lick ing that Clemson put oh host North Carolina State Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference football clash Only the chant should have made the word Brown plural The pre game publicity cen tered on NC Ted Brown the star runner and Heisman Trophy candidate The post game talk was about the Browns of Clem son halfback Lester Brown and linebacker Bubba Brown The Brown of the Clemson of fense Lester outrushed State's Ted Brown 117 yards to 70 scoring two touchdowns in the process or that performance he was selected Offensive Player of the Game by the ABC TV crew that televised the contest regionally The Brown of the Tiger de fense Bubba keyed the Clem son defensive effort from his right side linebacker position or his ferocious play he re ceived the Defensive Player of the Game honors There were so many top notch performances turned in by Clemson in its total domina tion of the game that Tiger coach Charley Pell had trouble singling any player out was the greatest team effort ever been associated with in all my years of football and a long said Pell a former assistant coach at Virginia Tech really express how I feel This was one of the biggest wins ever for Pell continued The one sided victory kept squad perfect in the ACC at 3 0 The only loss in seven games this season has been a 12 0 setback at Georgia The loss in front of 45000 at Carter Stadium knocked the Wolfpack from contention in the conference The 2 2 ACC mark (5 2 overall) pales next to the Clem son and Maryland (4 0) confer ence marks The Tigers will meet the Terps at Maryland Nov 18 in a game likely to decide the Atlan tic Coast Conference Champi onship The defeat and the way it was administered left NC State coach Bo Rein shaking his head just outplayed he said "I thought be higher for this game than we were last week (against North Carolina) I guess we Clemson controlled the game from the outset and dominated every major statistical catego ry The Tigers held the Pack a team averaging 260 rushing yards a game to just 116 Sev enteen times in the game Clem son stopped State running plays for no gain or minus yardage In all Clemson piled up 365 yards total offense to 206 The Tigers moved an aver age of 45 yards every time they touched the ball on offense The Wolfpack: less than three yards per play 'or the fifth time in seven games Clemson scored the first time it had the ball A 20 yard pass from quarterback Steve uller set up a 27 yard field goal by Obed Ariri that put the visitors out front 3 0 early in the first quarter uller touted as a Heisman grooms mechanics handymen riders and office help They buy one livestock They pay taxes contribute to charities stage benefits put organs and stained glass in their churches and pa tronize the arts So of course do other professional groups in the county but not in so wholesale a fashion It is not sophistical to say that what is good for the horse men of Albemarle is good for the county less than six minutes into the third quarter putting the score at 23 3 Rex Varn of Martinsville squashed a State drive and gave Clemson a 30 3 advantage in the final period when he mter cepted a Scott Smith pass and returned it 96 yards for six points State got on the scoreboard with its only touchdown of the day with five seconds left in the game on Wayne one yard run The TD only the second given up on the ground by Clemson this year was set up by a pass interference call In the end zone on Clemson all came together for us concluded Pell who leads Clemson against Wake orest next week knew we had to stop (Ted) Brown but we didn't have any magical alignment We just played as a Brown needed 21 car ries to pick up his 70 yards playing Lamp (6 5) and Jones at the guards But Holland also has the option of going with a much smaller lineup one that would include Castellan Owens and 6 5 Lee Raker at the forwards and senior Bobby Stokes (5 10) at one guard 0 See UVA Page D7 iio pari mutuel betting bill '1 Assembly 1373 is posted at the Acts 4 city and county in Virginia To oh thouse of bill call Joseph Holleman Jr 'V Copy of of Delegates at
