Marmaduke ® By Brad Anderson HOROSCOPE /JERALDINE SAUNDERS ARIES (March 21-April 19): Actions speak louder than words and today is a day when you can speak with a resounding voice. You may shock someone by taking the lead but surprises wake people up and get their attention. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): New faces in your life may be here today and gone tomorrow. Interpersonal crosscurrents may make forward progress difficult and good taste is lacking where purchases are concerned. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You may need to tiptoe around some landmines where your love life or career is concerned, as a few things may be going on that escape your notice. Your partner and trusted friends are your best guides through tricky situations. CANCER (June 21-July 22): You have the ability to concentrate on whatever needs your attention without interruption, so much can be accomplished today . Working behind the scenes is to your advantage. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Making changes in the status quo could seem counterintuitive but you can sift through a mishmash of minor disputes or emotional issues to find the right direction. You may need to relax and let someone else take the lead today to get the most bang for your buck. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Be confident where work is concerned and put extra effort into getting important projects off the ground. Wasting time or money shopping will drain you of cash and patience. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22.): Put off that shopping spree or public appearance. Temporary celestial aspects make this a poor day to make agreements or spend money. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Although you have a pretty good day to make your mark in the business world, it is still best to avoid writing up contracts or deal making. Others could be sensitive to inadvertent slights, so keep your book of etiquette close by and strive to be on your best behavior . SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Friends could have problems and you may think that a friend in need is a friend indeed. Put requests for financial help under advisement until tomorrow and do not get drawn into emotional squabbles that do not concern you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): There is always the vicious circle of needing to work hard to please others that leaves you with little time to spend with those you love. Striking a happy balance between two necessities may be your challenge this week. AQ UARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You are at your attractive best and a few flirtations could brighten up the day. Because you are such a live wire, others could be shocked. New relationships started under these stars could be fun but short-lived. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You may be shocked to find that mild flirtations are taken seriously or that stable relationships experience small reversals. Hold off on making declarations of love or making serious commitments. True love will still be there tomorrow . IF NOVEMBER 15 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: If you are in the market for a permanent romantic partner, December might be your lucky month. People you meet in the next six weeks will definitely have their heart in the right place and could view you through rose-colored glasses. But in January your feet must return to earth and dig in for a yearlong push towards material success. Your best months in the year ahead for successful relationships and making fortunate plans for the future are August and September . ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF As West, you start with three rounds of clubs against declarer’s four spades. Declarer ruffs the third, plays a heart to dummy’s king (on which East plays the nine), and then advances the spade jack, which wins the trick. He next leads the seven of spades, covered by East’s eight and won by the nine. Declarer now plays a low diamond. What is your best chance of defeating the contract? Declarer surely has both red- suit aces to justify his acceptance of North’s game-try — anyway, if he hasn’t, the contract will go down whatever you do. Now you must consider South’s distribution. He must have exactly six spades. If he had fewer, he would not have rebid the suit; if he had more, he would have drawn East’s last trump. Declarer must have two hearts because your partner’s nine, starting a high-low, showed an even number. Since you also know that declarer started with two clubs, he must have three diamonds. That leaves your partner with a doubleton. Put that all together and you will see that the winning defense is to rise with the diamond king and play a fourth club. If declarer ruffs in dummy, he can no longer pick up your partner’s spade king. If declarer discards from dummy, your partner discards his second diamond so that when declarer tries to cross to dummy with a diamond, he can thwart his plan by ruffing in. Either way, the trump king scores the setting trick. Monday, November 15, 2004 The following astrological forecasts should be read for entertainment value only.
