Your capacity to show appreciation for the good things that have come your way maximizes your influence on others. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): People are in an expansive and generous mood, so this is a good day to gather donations or participate in community functions. You may be able to strike up valuable friendships with important or influential leaders. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A fun weekend is on hand. Your strength lies in your ability to be a faithful and trustworthy partner. Remember that like attracts like. A little vagueness could cause minor mix-ups. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Act the gracious host. Or be the perfect guest. You are willing to let bygones be bygones and charmingly extend your generosity to everyone within view. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Be the life of the party. People are willing to do favors for you and you feel safe, cherished, and loved secure within the bosom of the family fold. Relationships begun now may require too much freedom, but will be joyous while they last. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Communicate. Heart - to-heart talks allow you to make amends or accept apologies without further rancor or recriminations. Make important resolutions now and they will easily unfold as planned. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Problems evaporate in the face of unflinching optimism. Put a smile on your face and enjoy some well-deserved rewards. Jupiter , the planet of good luck and opportunity, is now in your sign and should shower you with blessings in the next 12 months. What falls in your lap due to the kind influence of others might bring permanent bliss. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Make big plans. Promises made now will be kept. People have confidence in your abilities and faith in your honesty. It is a good time to set goals and make a good impression on others. Ask and you will certainly receive. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Honesty is always the best policy — and especially today. Remember the adage, “The truth shall set you free.” Be forthright with others and you may find that they graciously provide you with exactly what you have been trying to obtain on your own. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You are able to hook up with like-minded individuals who share your viewpoints and opinions under these cheerful stars. Those who exert a benign influence on your life will come closer and those who undermine your efforts will recede form view . PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Make an effort to reach an accord. Some earnest one-on-one conversations can straighten out misconceptions and restore the peace. Launch new ideas or projects that require public approval. IF OCTOBER 23 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: A breathtaking, exciting year is behind you and recent events have probably proved that you made perfect choices and are on the right path. Keep plugging away, building a new life, using the blueprints already on the drawing board. You may wish to lie low and avoid important decisions in late February and March — acting on instincts at this point could lead you astray. ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF Some experts refer to the play featured here as an obligatory false-card. What they mean is that the play is necessary to try to persuade declarer to take fewer tricks than the fates have dealt him. On today’s deal North-South had an excellent auction to seven hearts. After South had shown a strong balanced hand, North used Stayman, agreed hearts, and then cue-bid the diamond king. Now Blackwood by South confirmed that all the key cards were there, and South could count 13 tricks if trumps behaved. West led the spade jack; declarer won in hand and laid down the heart king, on which West played the heart nine. Of course this is the only card to give declarer a losing option, since if West had followed with a low heart, declarer would have been unable to guard against East having the remaining three hearts, and would next have led the heart queen from hand. But when West played the heart nine, dummy’s heart 10-8 now appeared to allow declarer to negotiate a bad trump split with East having the length. Doubtless South was aware of the possibility that West had made the correct technical play . But after due reflection she played a trump to dummy’s ace, and down went the slam. Does that mean you should play for your opponents to be geniuses? Probably not; if they make these plays, don’t you think they deserve to be rewarded once in a while?
