IF SEPTEMBER 20 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: You are surrounded by a plethora of good people and helping hands between now and the middle of next month. It is time to reap the benefits of your hard work, or to ask for favors from those who are in a position to help you. This is also a time to make plans for the future. The path you choose now will prove to be all you expected it to be, and you should be ready to take the first steps before the end of this month. Look for romance and heightened social contacts in late October or early November . ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF When South bids and rebids hearts over the one-spade response, he guarantees a six - card suit. This knowledge allows North to raise hearts with only a doubleton trump, since he knows there is a 6-2 fit. He does not have enough to force to game, but the invitational sequence describes his hand nicely. South continues to four hearts with his fine controls and gets a diamond lead. South does not appear to be in any particular jeopardy — and indeed he is not, so long as he analyzes the hand properly. The right way to look at the contract is to see that he is in danger of losing two trumps, a spade and a diamond. This will be his fate if he tries to draw trumps at once. However, the solution is simple: South must take a finesse of the spade queen at once. If it holds, declarer turns his attention to drawing trumps. However, when the spade finesse loses and a diamond comes back, South must take dummy’s diamond ace and cross to his club ace. He now leads a spade to dummy’s 10 to discard his losing diamond on dummy’s spade ace. Now he can play ace and another heart. He has to lose two trump tricks, of course, but still has his contract. It is important to focus on your winners and losers before automatically drawing trump. As many contracts fail from drawing trump prematurely as are lost from the failure to draw trump.
