Marmaduke ® By Brad Anderson HOROSCOPE /JERALDINE SAUNDERS ARIES (March 21-April 19): Others expect you to handle your fair share of the work in a businesslike way. Sometimes the only way to please others is to follow the rules. Avoiding criticism may be the only reward. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Precision and logic could give you the advantage in business dealings. You could be a bit less sensitive to the needs of others, so soften your demeanor with loved ones. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Deal with details and put finishing touches on projects while you see the whole picture. If you have recently become enthused by ideas or plans, this is a good time to put thoughts into action. CANCER (June 21-July 22): A brief period of dissatisfaction and the desire to act impulsively must be curbed. Although restraints may chafe, stay on an even keel and exercise your charm if you want to make a good impression on others. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Certain matters are illuminated that have been on the back burner. Gather more information so you can make an informed decision, and deal accurately with minor but crucial details. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The sun has moved into your part of the zodiac and strengthens ideas that have been in the background. Creative juices are stirring, so put form to imaginative schemes. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Being professional does not mean you must be harsh and unfeeling, but being direct and concise can help you get ahead in business. Your good manners oil the wheels. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Cooperation is a necessity today. A little formality can add respect to business dealings. Hone your good manners and you will have a skill suitable for success. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Partners may prove their trustworthiness, and speak their mind about important matters that concern both of you. A dose of reality may offset risks regarding joint funds. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Diplomacy is a tool you can use to bring diverse people together in a peaceful manner. Employ social niceties to get your way in business. Sprinkle a few gifts along the way, or free samples if you are selling something. AQ UARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Although you may be tempted to break free of restraints, remember that slow and steady wins the race. Being logical will win the approval of others. Old ideas may resurface for consideration. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Pick up the phone and make contact with others who are important to you but have been neglected—you could light up someone’s life. Handle small details with assurance. IF AUGUST 23 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: You can make long-range plans and put the pieces back together again. You may have to think long and hard about which direction to choose, but by mid-September you will be forging ahead without any doubts. Late September and early October are times when an important door could open for you and make your fondest dreams come true. Remember that you will get what you wish for, so think big. ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF Bridge writers have a hard time of it, you will not be surprised to hear. Whenever anything goes wrong in their column, there is always a phalanx of critics convinced that the author has finally lost his marbles. On today’s deal will anyone believe that the deal has a misprint, since three no-trump has nine top tricks? This is particularly true because at teams, overtricks are nearly irrelevant. Well, there is many a slip between cup and lip.... Consider your line of play carefully . When the spade king is led, it looks natural to duck once or twice, then win the spade ace, cash your five top club winners and then take your three red- suit winners. All well and good, but how do you plan to reach that fifth club winner, given the awkward blockage in the club suit? You cannot remain in dummy after four rounds of clubs to take your fifth winner in that suit. Having identified the problem, you must look for a solution. It seems impossible to set up a red-suit winner without letting West in to cash out his spades, so what else can be done? The secret is that you must duck the spade king, and then also duck the lead of the spade queen and the spade jack. Now whether West leads a fourth spade or not, you can discard your blocking fourth club from hand on the spade ace so that you can enjoy dummy’s fourth and fifth clubs at your leisure.
