People are in the mood to do things in pairs, so lavish attention on your significant other and you will receive more than your fair share of affection in return. Look for both money and romance in unexpected places. ACES ON BRIDGE /BOBBY WOLFF Many people believe strongly that when you have a weak two- suiter, you may give considerably more help to the opponents than to your partner by describing your hand precisely . Whether or not that is true, on today’s deal East and West helped to paint a picture of their hands, and South took advantage. East’s opening bid of two spades promised spades and a minor and 6-10 points. That was helpful enough, but when his opponents reached four hearts, East squirmed for a second or two before passing, thus suggesting to the alert declarer that she was 5-6 or 6-5 and considering a sacrifice. Since West did not know which minor his partner held, he led the spade 10. That was all the help South needed. He lost no time in playing off the top spades, discarding a club from his hand, then led a club from dummy. East put up the ace and switched to her singleton diamond as the most practical way to try to set the contract. South took his ace, finessed dummy’s heart nine, then ruffed a club. A heart to dummy’s king (East showing out) allowed declarer to ruff another club to hand, stripping West of his clubs. The stage was set for the coup de grace. Declarer cashed the diamond king and exited with a diamond. West could win and cash another diamond, but then had to lead away from his trump queen into the tenace at trick 12. Contract made!
