Courageous mother who died of same disease that killed sons By Marylynne Pitz Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Tina Marie Withum relished her roles as mother, wife and homemaker despite losing two sons to rare diseases and adopting two Chinese girls who developed serious medical problems.

On Sunday, she died of the same mitochondrial disease that claimed the life of her firstborn son, Eric. A younger son, Kevin, died from chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Graceful and petite, Mrs. Withum styled her light brown hair and dressed fashionably in matching robes, slippers and bracelets even as she battled her illness. She wore peach or pink nail polish, but beneath her fragrant femininity lay an iron will.

Diagnosed in 2002, she suffered abdominal discomfort and muscle fatigue and had to have a pacemaker installed five years ago. She used a wheelchair when she grocery shopped because she was uncomfortable standing on her feet for long periods. She also suffered from seizures, her husband, Richard Withum, said. The middle child of three sisters, Mrs. Withum grew up in Penn Hills and graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1987.

For the next six years, she worked as a secretary at a Downtown insurance company called Equicor. After dating for three years, she married Mr. Withum in July 1990. Mr. Withum said his selfless wife cooked meals until the day she left for hospice, kept a spotless home, baked cookies and cakes for family and friends and considered feelings first.

After death, the couple decided to adopt because they had difficulty conceiving. In 2001, they traveled to China and returned with Tiffany, now 8.

Tiffany suffered seizures, underwent brain surgery at age 4 and was diagnosed with a rare brain disease. She became combative and spent a year and a half in a group home before returning to the Withums last September. In 2001, 9-year-old Eric Withum died of mitochondrial disease. In 2003, the couple returned to China and adopted Courtney, whose sixth birthday is today. Courtney, her father said, is autistic and attends Mon Valley Special Needs School with Tiffany.
