Bad Barna' Bears Down On Auburn 31 7 Sports With Sparks EB DAVE SPARKS THE GREAT DEBATE overwhether the Big Eight or Southeastern Conference is the strongest college football circuit in 1971 will not come to a head until New night The wire service polls suggested that the Nebraska Oklahoma game matching teams rankeq 1 2 would decide the national championship of 1971 But a few folks in the South sure but what the Alabama Auburn game mat ching teams also undefeated but ranked 3 4 would settle it ortunately Alabama against Nebraska in a super duper showdown in the Orange Bowl on New night And Auburn against Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl Those two games match the Big Eight and the SEC champions plus the runner up teams from the two conferences obvious that the Nebraska Alabama game will decide the national cham Sports Editor noted Wilkinson aware that the Wishbone is a high risk offense He was right Oklahoma lost three fumbles and Nebraska only one and the Sooners lost a heart breaker With the SEC sending six teams and the Big Eight four to bowl games I think there is much doubt as to which two leagues are the strongest in the nation The only remaining debate appears which has the best single team MADISON COUNTY one of the high school football teams of 1971 has a fierce opponent in the cham pionship game against Appalachia In my seven years at Bristol I had the opportunity to see Appalachia play football several times and the of Jim Riggs are one of the most dedicated physical football teams I have seen pionship Then where does that leave Michigan (11 0) and Penn State (10 0) It probably leaves both out in the cold because Penn State and Michigan have two things in common neither played a tough schedule and both have everything to lose and nothing to gain in bowl games Penn State is matched against twice beaten Texas in the Cotton Bowland Michigan meets thrice beaten Stanford in the Rose Bowl If Penn State and Michigan win folks will fail to ootball is a way of life at Appalachia which sits in the heart of the extreme Southwest Virginia coal country in Wise County The Bulldogs are traditionally rugged and no one blocks and tackles any better than these troops There is nothing fancy about Appalachia The just physically punish opponents and the spirit and love for football in Appy is much like the new craze which has engulfed Madison County Seal I BW kr lx PAUL BRYANT RIDES HIGH AGAIN After Crimson Tide Rolled Over Auburn Sports Sunday Morning November 28 1971 Charlottesville A13 Sun Bowl Bound LSU recognize either as a national champion And if they happen to be upset it will really be a blow to their prestige myifojniongptatjjjthe Alabama Nebraska winner is the national champion at any rate And vou can bet that the Orange Bowl officials who landed these two for the night classic in Miami are rejoicing today truly a dream game and makes the previous Nebraska Oklahoma and Alabama Auburn games appear as national semi finals I would have to say however that it would be almost impossible to see a better football game than the one the Cornhuskers and Sooners engaged in at Norman Bud Wilkinson called the shot perfectly before the Big Eight
