Mike Cuellar and the Baltimore Orioles brought the giddy New York Mets back to earth Saturday with a 4 1 victory over Tom Seaver in the opening game of the World Series Don leadoff homer in the first inning and a three run fourth inning ruined Seaver who had finished the regular National League season with 10 straight victories and added another in the playoffs Cuellar a fast working Cuban left hander with a darting screwball pitch mastered the Mets except for a few brief moments in the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with one out and scored a run on Al sacrifice fly total of 50429 tickets were sold but only 48400 showed up leaving gaps in (he upper stands of Memorial Stadium despite the warm sunshine and clear skies It was an orderly crowd with only a smattering of the wild banners that always decorate Shea Stadium for Met home games Cuellar the top winner with a 23 11 record during the regular season Struck out eight Mets and walked three hi his first World Series start The Orioles acquired the veteran from Houston last December in a deal for £urt Blefary The Mets managed to stir up a mild juss in the ninth when Ron Swoboda scratched a single off glove Ind Al Weis walked But with two out two on and the tying run at the plate Cuellar made pinch hitter Art Shamsky bounce to Dave Johnson for the final Cut It was a routine game polished off In 2 hours 13 minutes with leadoff homer on second pitch groviding the most excitement Seaver seemed to have regained his confidence and was rolling along in good style with two out in the fourth when the Orioles struck again Catcher Ellie Hendricks singled and Johnson walked before Mark Belanger singled to right scoring Hendricks Cuellar 117 hitter then dumped a single into short center scoring Johnson who had taken third on throw to the plate on hit Buford then lined a double into the right field corner scoring Belanger Although Rube Walker the pit ching coach came out to talk to Seaver and the bullpen started to heat up Seaver stayed in and got out of the in ning With the Mets still unable to break through on Cuellar Seaver was' lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth and Don Cardwell and Ron Taylor shut the door the rest of the way real test came in the seventh when Clendenon opened with a single to center and Swoboda walked Ed Charles flied out but Jerry short single to left loaded the bases Weis carried the count to 3 2 before he hit a sacrifice fly to Buford in left permitting Clendon to score the only Met run It was the first run scored against the Orioles in World Series play after 39 shutout innings dating back to the opener in 1966 against the Los Angeles Dodgers Brooks Robinson the human vacuum cleaner who plays third for the Orioles took Cuellar out of real trouble by spearing pinch hitter Rod slow roller with his bare hand and throwing him out to end the inning Seaver had not lost a game since Aug 5 when the Cincinnati Reds beat him Although hit hard in the playoff opener at Atlanta a week ago he went seven innings before leaving for a pinch hitter and received credit for the victory I i I I i I I I I Mike Cools Mets Winning pitcher Mike Cueller gets 'the congratulations today after he pitched the Orioles to a 4 1 victory over the New York Mets in the World Series opener at Baltimore Virginia quickly regained possession on a fair catch of a punt on its own 45 Sophomore Mike Cubbage came in for UVa to make his debut and quarterback and quickly drove the Cavaliers across the goal line as Helman broke over the middle for a 40 yard scoring dash to make it 21 0 with placement with 3:37 to go in the first period Here the Cavaliers seemed to lose the impetus and spark although they did enough to hold their lead against a battered VMI team The second period touchdown was set up when a pass from center sailed high over kicker Hal head and it was first down for VMI at the Virginia 10 A run by workhorse Keydet back Tom Beyer and a pass by quarterback Murphy Sprinkel failed to gain Then Sprinkel spotted Tom Leemon in the corner of the end zone and hit him for a score This was the same Leemon whose punt return last year set up a win by the VMI Rats over the UVa rosh Don extra point kick made it 21 7 The teams staggered around a bit a sample of what was to be a dull second half until Selfridge pounced on a VMI fumble at the Keydet 36 assio returned to the lineup and with the ball on the 22 he lofted a pass to end Bill Davis and kick completed the scoring for Virginia The second half was a period of frustration for Virginia and particularly for Cubbage who looked sharp as a sophomore in his first game The Charlottesville native kept for an ap parent touchdown run only to see the ball shaken loose at the goal line and recovered by VMI Later he pitched a fine screen pass to apparently get the Cavaliers out of a hole only to see the drive halted by consecutive 15 yard penalties against Virginia A last minute Cavalier Drive was halted at the seven by VMI VMI despite its spirit had not the depth or the personnel to capitalize on second half errors The point hungry Keydets did manage to score once more in the final
