The purchase of IHRA stock makes 50 year old Hodgdon a full partner with Carrier in the drag racing sanctioning body the trade of the stock a contract was made where I would serve as president and general man ager of IHRA Bristol International Raceway and Thunder Valley for the next 10 said Carrier who opened the raceway in 1961 and the dragway in 1965 Carrier sold the 533 mile oval to Baker and Lanny Hester in Decem ber of 1977 and said at the time that he sold the NASCAR facility in order to devote more time to the growth of his drag racing sanctioning body which began operating in 1971 Hodgdon whose financial em pire spreads its tentacles into seve ral states from its headquarters in San Bernardino Calif entered the picture at BIR in 1981 when he pur chased holdings in the rac ing venture When asked Thursday if his reas suming the responsibilty for running the track contradicted his reason for the previous sale of the property Carrier said his agreement with Hodgdon was one of mutual neces sity for both parties IT need Warner Hodgdon in drag racing and he needs a general man ager for this Carrier ex plained has been profitable and he expects it to expand in many areas The immediate expansion will be in the East and the Carrier indicated that five tracks in Texas and one in New Mex ico will come under the sanction of IHRA next year He also said that the drag racing organization had signed an exclusive cable television contract with ESPN for next year As far as the operation of the oval is concerned Carrier said that there was little room to improve upon what Baker had accomplished but there would be some philosoph ical changes and certain events such as last ASA A11 Pro Volun teer 300 would be scrutinized have set up a special fund for future expansions and im said Carrier I see it we are at the top of the ladder on ticket prices You charge $20 for a 300 lap race and you put improvement costs on the price of tickets will have to come from another source other than ticket he said intend to hold ticket prices where they are if possible will have to give the ASA races a lot of thought because both have been big Carrier said pulled down the net profits both years I know whether have them back at this time It will have to be under a situation where we can hold the ticket prices at about $12 and still be able to show a As far as direct in volvement with the operation Car rier indicated that It would be that of an investor contract says that I work for Carrier said operate the business as I see One area where Carrier feels that improvement can be made in terms of profits is with the operation of Thunder Valley Stables and the Thunder alley Showgrounds stables doing what they were doing when I had said Carrier As for future plans in re gard to racing Carrier indicated that the Nashville attorney had signed a contract as part of the set tlement with Hodgdon which would not allow the former partner to be in volved with racing in a management or ownership role in Tennessee AP Laserphoto ft IL HI BQ WHAT A DIERENCE 12 YEARS MAKES Ted Simmons Of Milwaukee Greets Kansas Dan Quisenberry After inal Out In All Star Game
